Looking for red LEDs to replace interior lights.
« on: February 29, 2004, 01:00:39 AM »
I've looked at several sites using Google, bulb numbers and such, but no success.
Anyway, I originally put those red "condoms" over my stock bulbs, but after a year they've faded so it looks pink. I'm looking for red LEDs that can replace:

Two large, tube-style bulbs in the map light (Orasm K5618)
Four of the smaller reading light bulbs (two front and two in back) The OEM ones there are Orasm 3860
One for the VDO Vision boost guage

Does anyone know where I can get all of these? I can't beleive I can't find a vendor!  I'd prefer to buy pre-fabricated clusters than try to make my own.

There's a ricer racing shop named Trendz on Evans just east of I-25 on the south side of the street. They have all kinds of stuff, boost controllers, wheels, make custom body kits, I found some hard to find stuff in there, they might be able to find if they don't have it. Another place to check is Fistells electronics on Bannock and 10th, they have everything you could possibly think of dealing with electronics, including LED's.
Look officer, I really do own it......

Hey Pat, I have used a couple of places in my search for yellow (not amber) bulbs and recommend the following two:

http://www.importhookups.com/Lighting/Color_Bulb_Replacements.htm

http://www.image-racing.com/coloredbulbs.html

Give em a shot.

Pat,

I went to a camera store and purchased some red lighting filters. These are not the same as the plastic slips you put on the bulbs. I cut them to the appropriate size and slipped them between the bulbs and the light covers. The red matches the stock red dash perfectly and it hasn't faded since I put them in 3 years ago. I still have lots of it left, if you want to try doing this before buying red bulbs I'd be happy to give you a sheet.

Jason, that is a great Idea.  I did that in my first Passat with a blue overhead projector film/plastic sheet.  It worked great, but wrinkled a little when it got hot.  Sounds like the filter film holds up much better.  I may have to do some of that for the Allroad.  I saw your lights the other night after Jim's Burger and wondered how you did that, but never got around to asking.

cheers
