Dash Rattle - HELP
« on: October 27, 2003, 04:29:03 PM »
Does one know what causes the rattle in the dash of the B5?  I have owned 3 of them and they all have had a little rattle in the dash, by the middle defrost vent.  I have been tolerant of this for years, but now it is getting old.

If there is a known solution to this problem, please let me know.  Otherwise I will be taking my dash apart in an attempt to solve the problem.

TIA

I have a solution, turn your radio up louder!!! :D

Honestly, I have acquired a few rattles here and there.  I do know that Chas' "Chasbar" will help quiet some of them by stiffening up the front end.  If you drop your suspension and go to a larger size rim it is a guarantee that you will get them.
If it ain't broke, take it apart and fix it!

What do you think I have been doing that last 3 years?  Now that me hearing is starting to go, I figured it was time to fix the problem, not just cover it up with loud music.

I am going to pull off the covers to the vents in the front of the dask and look for the obvoius.  If I have no success, then I will go back to the loud music.

Now that you mentioned it, I hear an annoying rattle coming from my dash too! I notice that if I push on the HVAC controls it stops, though. Let us know what you find and good luck disassembling. :)

IIRC, the solution while in warranty (first 2 years) was to go to the dealer, they rip apart your dash, squirt some insulating foam in there or something like that and it shuts it up.  Then of course you are left with a dash not put back together well.

There have been a number of solutions presented on clubb5.com in the past.  I too have the rattle, soundle like bottles rattling around in the dash. Maybe there was a drunk German working on my car at the plant.

I actually saw someone on Clubb5.com that tore apart their whole dash to find it and finally got it.  You may want to do a search over there to see what you come up with.

My suspension is so damned stiff I think my rattles have developed rattles.  I don't think I am going to bother, so I am looking for an amp.

The Glove Box Squeak and th Dash Rattle usually are coming from the same place, but I could be wrong.  Mine is a halt rattle half squeak I guess oyu could say.  Coming from that region.

Well I am glad to see that I am not alone in my suffering, but I feel tha tthis issue is complex and will require at lease a 6 pack of beer and some serious investigation on my part. :?

I will do my best to find all the possible resons for the rattle's and squeeks and report my findings.

Untill then, keep the volume high

Oh man that's classic!

So is that with the dashboard removed, glove box removed, or neither? Is it just a matter of laying down on the floor and reaching up from underneath?

The only thing you have to remove is the black plastic part on the passenger side.  It is the same pannel as the drivers side that covers the fuse box, but on the passenger side of the car.  You then just stuff away-  LIKE A TURKEY AT THANKSGIVING.

In my weakened state, I will try and do this when I leave work today since it is warm.  Otherwise it's waiting until the weekend.

Hey is the heater coil by there.  If I get the pot close enough and hot enough I might be able to chill out during rush hour.  HMMM!   8O

I don't remember exactly, but some of the Passats had something loose in the dash. A guy on PW (passatworld), then ClubB5 got frustrated, stuffed a sock in it and it worked ;D
