this will be a replacement for the rover.

This vehicle would serve the following functions:
1) daily driver for me when the allroad is in the shop
2) daily driver for my wife when there is too much snow for the BMW to move
3) occasional offroad duty
4) would be used on long haul roadtrips with the family

#'s 2 & 4 are things that I am just not comfortable doing with the current rover.

Today I decided what I wanted, found the seller, test drove the car, and ran a carfax.  tomorrow I'll verify that the warranty is transferable, and will make arrangements for paying off the current owner's loan on the car.

so what am I getting?

Did I come close on any of them?

I mean I wouldn't take a BMW or Mercedes, unless it was an old school G-Wagen offroad. Oh, maybe a Touareg?

bzzzt. not it.  also looked seriously at the GC, but liked this choice better.

you all gotta get better at guessing -- read jay's first post in this thread and my response to it.  big hint in there.

ding ding ding.  we have a winner.

it will be an '04 disco II.  with a nice 4.6L and with the center diff locks.  will be much nicer for the family to ride around in - even includes an in the headrest dvd system for the wee ones.  best of all it is under warranty!

I'll get some pics after I bring it home

I was.  It had actually gotten pretty far.  I posted it for sale here since I am buying the new one.

Sounds cool.  I'd be interested in checking it out sometime.  I miss having a 4x4 and might get one in the spring.  I was looking at them when I got the Saab, decided for the small amount of off-roading I do I could rent something a few times a year and the rest of the time I'd be better off with a hatchback.  After a year and never once renting a 4x4 I might have learned something.  Unless I can just jump in it and go, I never get around to it.

I might put the purchase off for another year and try renting a couple times this spring/summer but I want to start thinking about what I might get.

I used to have an XJ Cherokee that was pretty good.  Great on the road and pretty good off-road too with part and full time 4wd, rear limited-slip, decent clearance.  Good AC, decent stereo.  I like the size of the XJ also.

Good luck with the new ride!

Thanks.  once I get it I will be happy to show you the new one.  also if you are jonesing for the 4x4, I'd be happy to sell you my old one.  It is really inexpensive.
