Where to get new key cut?
« on: February 11, 2008, 11:39:51 PM »
Is my only option the dealer to get a new key cut for the Audi?

I bought a remote and blank off eBay since my car only came with one key  >:(

I'm not sure if they are open, but hey it's worth the drive, when I got mine cut there I believe it was only $10, which sounds like a lot for a key cut, but better than the $250 I got quoted from another company, and that wasnt even WITH the key, that was just to cut it... here's their info if you wanna give em a call

I think Boulder Security Center can do them too but odds are there is also someone closer if that's what you prefer.  I would try calling a big lock shop and asking.
Maybe one of these guys:

Usually a big shop will know where to send you if they can't help you.

Boulder Security center is a big shop and they are pros.  It's farther North but a short walk from Dot's Diner, which is great for breakfast or brunch.

If you need help with VAG-COM I'm not too far from there too.

Hey Dizzle, I need to get a couple of keys cut too, so I will do some research on any places that might be able to do this on the south side.  I'm in Centennial, so hopefully there is something down here.

I will post if I find anything.  Let me know what you find too.

Thanks,
Dub

I should be around Saturday AM, the PM I will probably be out and about but it might be possible to meet somewhere.  I can throw the laptop in the car.

Wow, I didn't know Centennial went all the way over there.  I'm near Quebec and County Line.

I just went through about 5 locksmiths before I found a guy named Jason at Paragon Lock and Key that supposedly can do this.  His number is 303-587-5145.  I CLVM and haven't heard back from him yet.  I will let you know if I do, or you may just get lucky and reach him if you call.  Either way, he's in Aurora, so much closer than Boulder.

Well I did finally talk to Jason at Paragon Lock and Key and he can do them, is in Aurora, but will come to you and changes $60 a key.  I have 2 I want to get cut, so if the place up in Boulder will do them for $10 each, then it's worth the drive.

Can anyone confirm those prices?

I work at Quebec and Arapahoe and yeah, Centennial spans a big area, kinda broken up, but big.

I can call the Boulder shop to see what the cost is in a few minutes here.

OK, called the Boulder spot. If you have the key blank it is $10. They are open Saturdays from 9-1.

I won't use $60 worth of gas driving to Boulder so I will be heading out Saturday morning to get the key done.

I'd be up for it.  Boulder or the Hy 36 corridor... maybe Broomfield would be more central.  There are some good places for lunch/brunch/etc, a good NY-style pizza place on Midway or the Deli Zone (great breakfast sandwiches as well as deli subs) on the frontage road by the BBQ place.  Lots of BBQ too.  I do not know of anyone but me in Boulder and I live well East of town so more people might turn up if we meet somewhere like Broomfield.

I can bring a lappy with VAG-COM.

Well maybe it's worth a shot to walk in like Cole did and try and get it cut.  What have you got to lose?  We already all know how bad they are for service.  Maybe they will surprise us.

Are they really that bad? I have an open recall that I was going to have them do. And fix my broken fog light....

From the Audi standpoint, I have heard of better experiences at McDonald than with the VW side. The VW side botched a recall job on my 2006 Passat that would have resulted, more than likely, in an accident on the way home had we not caught it in the parking lot before we left (brakes). Proving they just did the work and never tested the car after doing the job. Or they just didn't care. In fact I could go on all day about why McDonald VW sucks, but you have an Audi now. :)

Some folks have had bad experiences with McDonald Audi as well, it is a recall, so maybe give them a chance. There are enough people that have had good experiences that they go back.

I think the dealer thing is always debatable. :)
