Sweet sound...
« on: March 13, 2008, 05:02:07 PM »
As some of you know, after my clutch failed last year and was no covered by my CPO, I removed all (well most) of the mods I had done to my GTI.  I couldn't risk being denied warranty coverage in the future, so it was easier to pull stuff off and sell it then deal with the service dept.

Anyway, I couldn't resist anymore and I caved (go figure!).   ::)   I just picked up and installed an Autotech stainless-steel cat-back system.  The price was right at $389 + shipping and the quality is really nice.  It features a new resonator and magnaflow muffler.  Removal/Install was a little bit of a PITA but more because of one rusty bolt and not tightening the new clamps enough then anything else.  Once I cutoff and replaced the bolt and tightened the clamps correctly, the system has stayed put.

Here's a crappy cell phone pic (I know it looks off-center, but it has to be to not touch the shielding by the gas tank):

The sound change is pretty dramatic.  It went from barely audible (you could hear the engine over the exhaust at high revs) to really impressive.  At idle, there is a slight gurgle that tells you something is different.  Step on the gas and the sound explodes out of the exhaust.  On the road, there is a little droaning between 2-3K RPM, but otherwise the sound is really nice.  In the day and a half that I've been running it, I've noticed head turning from cars in front and behind from the sound and it makes people stop walking and look.  ;D

Overall, I'm pretty happy with it and I'll get to really see what it's like this weekend at Pueblo (NASA HPDE).  Should be fun-er now!

Thanks!  I really like the tips.  As for the sound.  Here are the audio files that pretty much made up my mind.  Note: It is actually louder then this in person and in the car.
