I've got a couple months, but new cell phone time coming
« on: December 23, 2008, 02:18:09 AM »
Right now I am looking at the T-Mobile G1, AT&T Apple iPhone and the Verizon BB Storm.

I have played around with iPhones a fair amount, but have not had one for everyday use. As I understand they require you to reload everything every time you install an app?

The G1, which I have only had the opportunity to tinker with for a few moments is neat, a little bulky and seems a little slim on information and the applications I am after. However, I am a huge fan of the open source OS and some of the extra freedoms with the phone.

The storm, I have not even had the chance to use, other than look at the dummy on display in stores. I have actually always been anti-crackberry. Namely because nothing drives me more nuts than being int he middle of a meeting and watching all the addicts check their BB constantly and read/reply to emails while not paying attention to a damn thing.

I am not hell bent on just focusing on these three but here is my criteria.

Phone should be leading edge, needs WiFi, a real browser, GPS, the ability to install applications, access to an outlook email server (send and receive email, not use the Webmail client), touch screen is a big want though not a necessity.

I am frustrated with the services and the manufacturers. These phones are freaking pricey if you don;t want a contract and for the money you should be able to do what the hell you want to with them as long as you aren't disrupting the network. Basically a lot like a home computer connected ot the internet.

I should be able to ruin my phone installing and uninstalling stuff, I should be able to "flash" it at the drop of a hat to return it to stock, a la reinstalling an OS on a PC.

I think the G1 is the closest to my wants in terms of freedoms, but it has it's downsides because of Tmobile being lame and just being so new. However, you can use SD cards so in a way your storage is expandable whereas with the iPhone you are stuck with what you buy. I know Samsung (I think) was saying they should have an android phone come Q2 2009. Sounds like Motorola will as well.

Of course the iPhone is really appealing, is widely used and supported, has hacks and all that. I have seen some great apps like VNC clients, SSH, Outlook, stuff like that which is really appealing. I just hate reloading the whole thing every time. Actually one of my biggest gripes about iPods. Well at least my shuffe, you just can add another song, you have to reload everything. What a joke.

To date I have been a HUGE Nokia fan, the last 4 of  5 phones were Nokia with a Sony/Erricsson in the middle.

Anyway, if any of you have the phones I am looking at I would love your honest feedback. And I am always open to input.

Sounds like an iPhone to me.  I have one, well, 2.  Old gen, and the new 3G.  Love them both, no problems what so ever and I have them hacked to work with my tmobile account.

I just got an iPhone for Christmas to replace my work blackberry and my personal LG phone.  For me, it came down to functionality as well as some of the performance and features.

I get about 300 work emails a day, but I also like to use my phone for media and music, so both email functionality and media prowess were important.  I have a buddy that got the HTC Touch Pro, which is pretty cool, but the smaller screen, higher price than the iPhone gave the iPhone an advantage with the 2.2 software update.  [I cant carriage return for some reason, so begin long paragraph].  HTC (www.htc.com) has a Touch HD in Europre that would have worked for me with a screen slightly larger than the iPhone, but they don't sell it here in the USA and wouldn't even guess at how much it would cost, so advantage #2 to iPhone.  Then I went for a bike ride with Pat and he did some ride stats and mapping with an iPhone app called TrailGuru.  Ok, advantage #3.  What put me over the edge was the fact that I already have car stereo hookups for aniPod/iPhone in all of my vehicles.  So I gave Jen my iPod and got the iPhone.  The email issues is really a non-issue, but it was the only thing I was worried about.  OVerall, I am really impressed.  Good luck with your choice, Jay.

I went through all this recently and ended up with the Samsung Instinct by Sprint. I made up a small spreadsheet comparing all the options important to me at the time.

The Instinct has GPS and turn-by-turn driving directions which is cool. People have griped about its browser, but I haven't had any problems viewing pages with it. I also installed Opera which works well, but usually i end up using the built-in browser. Apps are scarce, that is the only downside. I installed Pandora yesterday and it seems to work well.

One thing it doesn't have on your list is WiFi. I think it would be nice, but honestly I haven't missed it. Don't know why they didn't include that, but maybe it's a software thing and they'll enable it later...

I have my work e-mail set up on it which is a native client, not via web. However, it does use the outlook web address (OWA) to connect so you'll need that access available. It will show my inbox, I can send messages, it even connects to the catalog server so I can look up contacts. Gmail works great as well.

Texting is in a "conversation" which is something the iPhone and G1 do, but none of the verizon phones were offering at the time (unless you went crackberry).

I've had the phone since November, and honestly can't put it down. It is also much smaller (relatively) than the iPhone and G1. The only one on my list that was slimmer was the Samsung Glyde by Verizon. I really liked the design and feel of the Glyde but the lack of conversational texting kicked it out of the running.

Lastly, although the Instinct is not an open OS, the data on the card is open which is very cool. I can plug it into a linux box and actually see the file structure for moving pics and audio files to and from the phone. If you are using Ubuntu, I had problems connecting to 8.10, but 8.04 worked fine. Using a card reader (it holds a microSD - came with 2GB and I plan on upgrading to 8GB for about $20 soon), it works everywhere I've tried it.

Another downside I've found is battery life. It does come with an extra battery and charger, so that is handy. I ended up paying $150 (after a $100 rebate) for the phone and am paying $70/month for service with Sprints 'everything data' plan and 450 minutes I'll never use.

I hate Verizon and their stupid proprietary software. It makes all phones the same. Sort of like cell phone socialism ;D

You got a good one, I have a couple friends with 'em and they like 'em.

I am liking it so far, I'm sure I will spend all night playing with it and getting it and me up to speed.
