clean, OEM-looking roof rack bars for 2001 A4?
« on: May 19, 2009, 04:58:43 PM »
I'm not finding what I'm looking for in the roof rack world. Most solutions for a 2001 A4 sedan involve the clippy rack bars which, though functional, look less than awesome. What I really want is the two crossbars installed on newer Subarus like the forester and impreza:

Yakima has some "landing pads" that look like they would do the trick, but apparently these require some factory installed fasteners which I seem to be missing. So I think I'm looking for a permanent, drill-some-holes-in-the-roof type solution. I have no problem with this, as long as it is solid (can hold 4 snowboards and/or skis, or 2 bikes), ends up looking professional, and doesn't leak...  :-\

Has anyone messed with this type of setup? Is there some product out there I'm missing?

Most of these newer cars have these little notches in the roof for an install like that or as Yakima describes, factory installed fasteners.

Contact Rack Attack, they have a couple stores out here and do installs. They may be able to answer that question for you.

Thanks - I ran across the rackattack.com website just after posting. May have to head down and see what they can do.

It may turn out that a custom job is more than I want to spend and end up with the clip-on variety. Thought I'd explore the options first.

I've seen some OEM racks, but mostly for passats. Haven't found much for a 2001 A4 sedan, though I'm still looking (AKA: have yet to get off my lazy butt and work on this project further). What I saw in the OEM variety looked good, but still involved a clip-on mount rather than permanent.
