Title: National GTG Track Day - Friday August 20th
Post by: DenverPat on June 28, 2004, 02:28:46 PM
Rocky Mountain Club B5 is having our annual GTG from Friday, August 20th to Sunday, August 22nd.   We are renting Second Creek Raceway for the entire day (8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.) for $2,000. We expect to have 20 to 35 participants. The more people that come, the less it is per person. If 30 people show, it'll be $67 per driver. If 40 people show, it'll be $50 per driver. Normally it costs $100 per driver for a full day, so this should be a great opportunity to get out there and have some fun. All money paid will go to SCR. In other words, Rocky Mountain Club B5 will not make money on this.

The event is open to all friends and family of RMCB5.  If you know of any others that would like to go, feel free to invite them.

I will be handling the financials. If you'd like to go, please post here and I will send you an e-mail with payment information. If you have any questions, please post them here so others can see the response, too. In order for this to work we need a financial commitment. I need to have $2,000 no later than Saturday, July 31st.  I am required to have the money available for SCR, since I'm the one signing the contract. I wish I were in the financial position to front the $$$ for everyone, but alas....

I'm asking for people to submit $100 initially. Assuming there are more than 20 people that attend, you'll get a refund of the difference within a week or two after the event. The amount of the refund depends solely on the number of participants.

Track Prep:
Be sure to bring plenty of water and ice, food to share, chairs, sunscreen, stopwatches, digicams, and videocams.

Some other things you'll want to check on your car are oil, brakes and tire pressure. Be sure to come with a full tank of gas, too!

I will have a few canopies set up for shade.

Anyone that goes on the track is required to wear a helmet. If you don't have one, see if you can find one to borrow before track day.  The last thing we want is a lack of helmets that will limit everyone's time on the track.  If you canít come up with one don't worry. There might be a couple extras there to borrow.

Last year we had around 22 drivers and we had all the track time we could stand.  The track will easily support 30 drivers, so there is no need to be concerned with having too many people there and not getting enough track time.  This track day is open to all members of RMCB5 as well as any family and friends.  We hope to have a significant number of MINIs and older VWs show, too.
We hope to have four collapsible tents/shelters there, but itís a good idea to bring something to sit on.  Of course youíll want to bring plenty to eat and drink.
Here are a couple useful links to check out if youíve never spent time on a track:

I am a definite maybe at this point.  I know there are 2 MINI guys that are gonna sign up...Jonathan S. and Brad M.  So count them in the numbers.  I am gonna have the MINI guys send me checks in your name Pat, then I will get them to you, if that is OK?  That way at least they know who they are sending the money to.

Thanks for all the prep work on this one, I know it is no easy task

cheers

Well I'm in as well. I'm not sure what the details are for Ian's school yet, but this should work out OK. This year he goes every day of the week, all day. I am hoping to get my wife to come out as well and see what this is all about. Should be fun! :)

I'll see if my nephew with the RSX Type S will be coming this year. Maybe he'll take it easier and stay on the track!

Send me the info Pat.

Has anything been planned for after the track day event? If not, I would like to open up my place to an after track party. I live not too far from the track and have the space for us all. Just a thought if this hasn't already been discussed. Let me know! :)

Well Chas, we were originally planning on going to the Blake Street Tavern since they are sponsoring us to some extent.  Since that moved to Sunday, we are open for Friday evening, so that sounds good.

Pat is in charge of coordinating that day, so contact him with your plans and he can integrate it into the day's festivities.

I ams o jealous! I'll be driving into Jackson on this day so I'll drive really fast and think of you guys.

hello everyone.  I have a few questions...

directed to the quote above, which day will the actual track day be?  Friday or Sat or Sun?

also, i have some Ford friends that would love to join in....it'll make your price go down , so that's got to be good.

some have SVT Contours, modified, and some beefy SHO's...  (one of the SHO's caught up with a 360 Modena at PPIR!  I saw the video 8O )

would you guys mind if some of them show up to add in?

thanks for your time, guys.

Hello all, My name's Chris. LEDdood is one of my forum buds and "non-Mustang" Ford fans. I'm essentially who he is posting for, so I figure'd I'd do it myself. Basically, I was talking to LED about getting a nice track day in with some of the Ford Focus SVT, Contour SVT, and Taurus SHO guys for a good price. He mentioned he might not be able to make it, but he could ask around for me, then sent me the info on this one, so here I am.

I entirely understand if you do not want us encroaching on your space and/or G2G, but if you would have us it would be great. I don't think we would get anymore than 15 people, of if you'd like you could limit us to 10 or what have you. But if you wouldn't mind a few Ford guys (no we aren't your typical Mustang fella's, we are all very respectable, and very very friendly and open) joining you, it would be great to do this with you chaps.

I believe we have one member that even has an a SVTContour and an S4, so that should be interesting. Let me know if I should start gauging interest from the SHO/SVT guys, and I can get back to you with an estimate of # of people. Thanks for the thought ~ Chris

I think a few guys are fine...we are all enthusiasts.  It all comes down to attitude and good sportsmanship, and respect for others that are learning.  You may not always be able to go the fastest, but you will have a great time.

I don't want to speak for everyone, but having a few of you all out there would be awesome.

cheers

One other point, though this is our National GTG, the concern about "who's coming" isn't about what kind of car someone has, it's about having too many people at the track.

We are renting the track for the day which will translate into a per person cost to make it more affordable.  So don't think that by our loose answers that we are saying no or blowing anyone off.

Since Pat is the co-ordinator we aren't sure what the headcount is at this point so it's hard for any of us to make a decision without knowing.

I think Pat may be out of town, but when he is available I'm sure he'll chime in.  You can send him a PM via the site as well to inquire.

We still have some time before the track day so keep checking in and thanks for your interest in our club.

Allright, thanks for the hospitality guys, I PM'ed Dan, and hopefully he'll allow us to attend. To do some butt kissing, I absolutely LOVE Audi's and Mini's so hopefully he'll at least allow a few of us so that I can come out and enjoy the views    But I think just about everyone out there respects Audi's, so I guess my compliments should come at no surprise. Any chance an RS6 will be out there? I recall seeing one in the mountains on I-70 on my way back from Mt. Evans, beautiful car. Another fond memory was seeing a show on the Speed Channel that did a little piece on the Mini's, showing them doing jumps, two wheeler's, 180's and such in a very small little area. I was ready to get to a dealership that instant, but my SVT keeps me pretty busy as it is.

Oh and for some decent competition, one of our SHO's has been supercharged to the max, with all the appropriate suspension and safety modifications. Recently dyno'ed at a whopping 445 hp I believe. His name's Pat, great guy, and a very good track/auto-x racer. He should be all for this, so I'm just crossing my fingers that you'll have room for us. ~ Chris

I'm all for as many people as possible to keep the costs down, but I'm not coordinating. I remember my very first time at SCR included S2000s, Ford Contour SVTs, Audi, BMW, VW, motorcycles, and kit race cars. It was great!

I wouldn't mind 40 people at the track ($50/person). We're not all driving at once.

Hey kids, I just got back into town.  Chas, thank you VERY much for offering your place for the party after the track.  That's very nice.  I think that's a great idea, especially considering your location relative to the track.  Unless anyone objects, I say go for it.

Post by: LEDdude on July 11, 2004, 09:18:27 PM
well, kinda pertaining to the RS6's,   i and some of the Focus guys went on a cool mountain drive to Glenwood springs today, and then got back to traffic at Idaho Springs.  So we went around past Mt Evans to Evergreen to bypass it and have some nice twisty runs.....  but passed 3 Brand New A6's in a row, going the opposite way, and passed by a few more sitting in a gravel parking lot with no one in them, or around, not too far from the interstate.

Yep, the new A6's....i don't think the're out, yet.  Right?   They look really nice...fooled me , i thought they were A8's....but not as long   but very nice.  but one of our guys noticed that the last one that passed, had dealer tags.  So i guess they were taking them on a test drive.

In fact, the new C6 platform A6 is out, is has a 3.2V6 and I believe there is also a 4.2 V8 version.  They have been at the dealers for about a month or so now.  There is also a 2 door hatch A3 floating around somewhere, there were pics of it on Audiworld for a local Rocky Mountain Drive they had on July 4th.

Right on Randy.  Good work.  Pat I'm sure, will just keep editing the top post on this topic to update the drivers along with our current financial goal to get to $100 a person then $50 a person.

Remember, the day of it will be $100 flat fee so plan on getting some cash to him before the end of July.

Thanks Jon, he is an experienced racer that we might learn a thing or two from.  He is heading out to PPIR a few weeks after our track day which is why cost is a factor.

You should hook up with him and get a ride.  I haven't ridden in it with the new engine and supercharger so I am dying to go for a spin.

Oh great we have moved from a nice little cult to a full-blown Regiem!  Next we are going to have a revolution and all sorts of crazyness....

For a communist regiem we sure are tollerant of "Auslanders".  But that is good, we are a kinder, gentler bunch of commies.

- I do have something to add that is relavant...Make sure you check with your insurance company to see if you have an exclusion on your policy for this type of activity.  You can simply ask the question, "do I have coverage if I take my car to a "driving school" or "track"  for  a day.  Be sure to let thenm know youare not RACING your car, just taking it to a track to improve your driving.  Most insurance WILL cover this, but all insurance EXCLUDES racing.

Now back to your regularly scheduled life....

Randy, that is a very good point.  We are not actually racing.  No competition is going on, we are just driving on the track.

I will follow up on that with my company, USAA.  Or was it the FDA?  FDIC?

OK guys, So the after track day party will be at my place. I am open to having you all come and enjoy yourselves. Of course I'll want to enjoy as much track time as possible, but I'll still need to get going home in time to get things ready for the evening.

Obviously I won't be able to buy all the food to feed everyone and I'm sure you guys would want that either. So we need to have a hand count of what everyone wants to eat afterwards.

*Burgers
*Brats (I was thinking about getting a couple of racks)
*Ribs
*Beer (of course)
*Potato salad
*chips
*soda
*or anthing else that fits at a party like this!

So if there is something you really want to see, let me know.

Also, what time do wee want to start this thing off at? What time are we done at the track? And I'm sure some folks will want to head home first to clean up and get their better halves or little ones. Like I said, everyone is invited. The backyard at my place is very kid friendly so bring them all! Also bring your mosquito spray too. There is a large pond near the house and we do get the bugs. I wouldn't want anyone getting any West Nile baddness.

Anyhow, chime in!!! Please!

My friend Matt will be in from out of town all weekend.  He'll be at the track with us, so sign me up for two, maybe three.  Not sure what I'll do for food yet, but I'm guessing Matt and I will just bring a little something to eat for the two of us, and maybe a little more.  If I remember right, we'll shut the track down around 6:00.

So maybe we should plan on having folks over at 7 ish???

You guys let me know, we can do it when ever...

Also, I did talk to my nieghbor, the lady with the Convertable Carrera. She was very interested in coming out with us. So I might have a someone else as well.

Also, I am working on building three more in car camera mounts. Winston and/or Pat was working with someone at SoundTrack to get us a deal on Pan/Tilt heads for the aluminum headrest mounts. The footage we get from these cameras will be killer. The camera will be able to be mounted in many different ways to get all sorts of great shots. Winston was talking about putting together a DVD with all the different footage. So we should see what formate we'll need to cut this DVD together. I assume a digital format is all that is needed and then some sort of Firewire system into a computer with an editting capability. I can talk to my brother about using his system and camera. He does all of his diving stuff at home and it looks great!

As for the cameras, also remember to bring them to the after track party. We can preview the footage at my house on my Vega for a lot of laughs!

as for camera mounts, anyone seen this one, comes with the little camera, mount, and wires, and is reasonable.  I was considering this, but don't have a digital cam to plug it into

That's totally cool Jon! It seems like that little camera takes some reasonably good images. And the price is right too! I do know SCR doesn't allow cameras mounted outside the car, but with that little suction cup, you could hide it anywhere and no one would be the wiser. I might have to get me one of those and right it off as a business expense. It's video gear is it not?  :P That would supply some very cool images to say the least.

As for my house, I live about 20 minutes south of the race track. Not far at all. That's why I decided to offer up my place for the after track event. I'm hoping not to be working on the Thursday before track day so as to get all the prep work done early.

PM me for the address and directions.  :-D

but remember Chas, we are having a private session, so they have no say over what we video, or how we video it, and the worst they could do is tell us to take it off, so then we take it off and film from the inside of the car.

True about the video there, Jon.  We have the track to ourselves, so something like that would be very cool.

Chas, G-money has a buddy that is making camera mounts and wants to sell them for $40.  I was thinking that might be a good cheap option and you wouldn't have to do any work.  A pretty good deal, I'd say.  Have you made the rest of the parts though?  If so, I'll let Greg know and see what else I can find, but the pickings, as they say, have been slim.  Where did you get yours?

Hi Guys! Back in town from a weekend with the family up in Glenwood Springs. Well I started in on the mounts and have most of the aluminum cut and drilled. I was cutting out the mounting points for the pan/tilt head when I almost lanched one through the windshield of my car. A new windshield BTW!!!! Anyhow, work is progressing with them.

What are you talking about Winston? Is this guy making the whole deal or just a part? I thought I was doing the camera mounts? Please let me know so I don't waste any time or aluminum doing something someone else has now taken up.

OK, well that's news to me. I thought I was the one building them. It would have been nice had someone told me before I went out and bought some stuff to finish them up. Idems at this point I can't return.

Please let me know if I should bother with them any further. I have two almost done and all the pieces for the third cut and waiting.

I'm still hoping to get my nephew out there with his nasty RSX-S. I like to drive that little bugger on the track!

Hey all, also remember to get yourself some Toluene to bump your octane rating and keep the detonation down to a minumum. Kwal-Howell paint stores sell it. About $10 for a gallon of 114 octane. Half a gallon of the stuff really improves the drivability of your turbo hotrods in the heat!

That's a great tip, Chas, and lots cheaper than race gas.  If we only need 1/2 gal, does anyone wanna go halvsies on a gallon?  I'm not sure I want to make a road trip with a gallon of Tolulene in my car... it might leak and I might get flashbacks to the days of building model airplanes...

Hey Chas, I still found out and to my knowledge it is still up in the air until it is completely done.  Since I got the whole ball running with you on that and have been a little swamped to try and keep up, I will still buy at least one of them from you, but I still need to find the mounting plate, which I have not been able to find yet.
Title: National GTG Track Day - Friday August 20th
Post by: ColoradoB5 on August 01, 2004, 10:21:24 PM
Hey Chas, I just saw a PM from Greg and he has DVDs with footage of the mounts and the quality, I believe.

For now, go ahead and put them on hold.  We will sell the ones you made, but since these will not require us to track down the mounting plates, this may be easier all around.

I just installed my first windshield too.  Not too tough, but it was a slight pain getting the seal cut out all of the way around.  The old windshield did not survive the extraction.

For those who are not going to seek out the 93 here are some quick formulas:

Formulations:

16 Gallons  - Total capacity of tank (3 gallons always in tank) 13 left

Toluene 114 is octane

(12.5*91) + (.5*114) / 16 = 91.7 :-)

(12.0*91) + (1*114) / 16 = 92.4 :)

(11.5*91) + (1.5*114) / 16 = 93.1 :-D

(11.0*91) + (2*114) / 16 = 93.9 :D

**THESE ARE CALCULATED ACCOUNTING FOR THE 3 GALLONS IN THE TANK**

I have talked to a couple people about the track day, both seem very interested, should I have them bring the money to the track that day ?  Or have them pay in advance also, both are trustworthy and will have no problem with the money situation..  Told them it would be around $100, but since there are already more than 20 people paid, that it would be slightly less than that.  Let me know what you want me to tell them, sounds like 1 of them is a for sure thing (weather permitting) and the other is very interested in trying his wife's new toy at the track.

Petro stop...corner of parker and quincy...93.5 octane, it's the last pump by where the motorhomes have to go.  it's usually the same price as premium too.

I'm filling up there from now on.

32 cars so far!!! This is going to be sweet! Tried replacing my TREs this past weekend and they were a no-go. Rusted on there good. Hopefully I can get them replaced and get an alignment before Friday or else it'll be an expensive day watching.

Hey Andrew, I had the same problem.  I ended up using two vise-grips to start them going.  It was tough, but ended up working for me.

Win,  I was helping him and he has a solid bead of rust the incircles the thread.  We both tried and could not budge it.  Outside of grinding away the rust, I cannot think of what else to do that would not cause damage to the any of the affected parts.  Speaking for myself, I was bummed!

I have an appointment tomorrow morning with McDonald VW to fix my TREs. They'll try removing just the TREs by any means necessary. If they won't come off, they'll replace the entire tie rod assembly to the tune of $600!

For all you Northwest-side-of-town folks - My friend Jim and I are going to meet up to drive to the track together.  Join us if you want to all drive over together.

we are meeting at the Starbucks at 80th and Wadsworth between 7:15 and 7:30 then will depart for 2nd creek.

Yes, Elmo is still in the car.  He now resides on the back of one of the front headrests as our daughter is old enough to be facing forward now.  Anyway,  I was going to take him out along with the car seat, but may leave him in just for fun.

Do you know if there are any cones that we can use? I think it helps, even experienced people, to put cones out to mark apexes and turn-in/track-out points. Or, with all the rain, we might want to mark some of the areas that you don't want to drop a wheel off.

Slow burn rate == Loss of power
and higher engine temps i believe.

it would make roughly 107 octane...

Maybe a little much...
Title: National GTG Track Day - Friday August 20th
Post by: Chas on August 19, 2004, 11:01:59 AM
Tolulene has an octane rating by itself of 114. That added to 105 gas seems like over kill, especially for Rusty's car which doesn't have any optimazation of the timing maps like the chipped cars do. And even in a chipped car it won't be needed. I do beleive that an increased octane rating for a car with a 91 octane chip still makes more power because there is less detonation going on and the ECU can advance the timing more that without the increased octane. Though some people doen't believe that is true, I have felt the difference on track days in the past.

Add a gallon of Tolulene to a 3/4 full tank of 91 octane gas and you'll have a better time at the track. The 105 race gas is also a great way to. Maybe a bit more expensive in the end.

Tolulene can be had at Kwal-Howel paint stores for about $9 a gallon. Nasty stuff though. Don't breath it or let it touch your skin.

....or your car's paint.  It's used sometimes as a paint thinner.
I've found 95 or 96 octane is about all my car can benefit from.  After that it's pointless.

I bought a funnel and 1 gal. gas can to put the toluene in which worked great. Keep a rag over the tip of the spout til you get it in the filler and keep rag there underneath to make sure no drips escape.

Stuff is definately nasty. I did this mid-day with only a cuppa coffee in me and when the fumes hit me I got all goo-goo headed. So i guess the warning is... Don't Use on an Empty Stomach

Post by: snickryder on August 19, 2004, 05:09:03 PM
Hey, guys,

For those that have never been to Second Creek before, and even for those that have, I wrote up a Course Guide today.  I've been driving and racing at SCR for 4 years and have LOTS of laps there.  Just click on the link below and download it (Word doc).

Second Creek Course Guide (http://www.snyder-motorsports.com/SCRGuide.doc)

I will have some copies at the track tomorrow for people, but if you want to print it off, that might help.  I'll go over some of what's in there for everyone and then if people want the detailed version, I can do that to.

I will be available all day for questions and instruction, in your car or mine (SVT Focus), so don't hesitate to ask.

See you tomorrow!

Are the gears mentioned in the write-up for a 6-speed car? I ask just because I never get to 4th in my 5-speed. Or maybe that's because I'm doing something wrong.

The gears I mention are for a 5-speed and are based on driving this track in many different cars (A4, S4, 944, SRT4, Focus, etc).  95% of the cars will use these gears when you are pushing 10/10ths.  If you aren't getting the full drive off the corners, then you might not make it to 4th gear down the straights.

But, don't worry so much about the gears, they are there for reference.  It's the line (turn-in, apex, track-out) that is really important.  But, if you have questions, don't hesitate to ask me tomorrow.

Rick

Well, I got the broken studs out, one at the track and the other Sauturday morning when I had more tools to work with. I didn't have new studs to replace the broken ones with; my LF tire is now wearing lug nuts instead.

Good lesson to be learned: If your wheel takes an impact replace all the studs/lugnuts with new ones.
For those that didn't know I had spun my car last June during the SCCA's Solo Trials. It was during qualifying, my tires were cold, the car oversteered in the esses at the end of the back straight (running CCW), I thought I had caught it but the car hit a bump and snapped around. I went off at over 80 mph into the tire wall going sideways/backwards. That wheel took enough of a hit that it broke the bead on the tire. The wheel was undamaged but it must have stressed the wheel studs enough to create some microscopic fractures. One broke the next day, then two more last Friday. I'll be replacing all of the ones on that side of the car.
Title: National GTG Track Day - Friday August 20th

Whew!

I made it home, and to Tennessee, and to Massachusetts, and then back home, w/o the CV boot leaking a drop.  I think the grease just got so hot (thin) on the track that it seeped through micro-cracks in the boot that it normally is to too thick to seep through.

I had a GREAT time!  So sorry I didn't make the rest of the GTG.  Thanks Pat, and Rick, and Everybody!

Take Care everyone - see you again soon, probably at Pueblo if it happens.
