Title: April 19th GTG at High Plains Raceway
Post by: ianacole on April 02, 2009, 12:14:25 PM
Is there any interest in having a BBQ Lunch GTG at High Plains Raceway April 19th?  NASA has the track for the weekend, and everyone is welcome to come out and watch, have BBQ (I'll bring mine), and experience a new track.  It's ~45 minutes from the Mouse Trap, so closer than the Castlewood Canyon GTG of a few years back that was very fun.  There is no charge to enter, and there will be a lot of cool cars out racing, to include yours truly Wink

If the interest is there, I'll work it out so that the schedule is open during the lunch time frame so we can all hang out some, BBQ, eat, and then go watch.

I voted yes as I am definitely interested, but I wont really know if I can until within a few days. If the 18th wipes me out, that would make it hard. However, there are many reasons to make it, to see the new track, see some racing and most of all, hang out with you!

I move that weekend, but a day at the track seems like a perfect reason NOT to unpack :)

I'll work out the schedule to have time over the lunch hour.  Let's say start arriving around 11:30?  The grill will be ready by noon.  Bring what you want grilled and we'll be done with lunch by 1pm, and then on to watching high speed fun!!

I also just found out that NASA-RM is planning on opening the track on Sunday at lunch to any and all who want to tour the track - IN THEIR OWN CAR!!! Speeds will be limited to 35MPH, and no helmet will be required!

For those coming out, look for this car and trailer (we'll be in or around the attached motorhome):

That is sweet. I've got plans that weekend though. I'd be more tempted to ditch those plans if it was a full-on track day :P

Well, it is a full on track day .... assuming you signed up for an HPDE level through NASA for the weekend ;)

Sunday schedule update:

I will be on track from 11:00am - 11:15 am
Lunch and slow rides from 11:35am - 12:35pm
I'll be back on track at 2:30pm for the final race of the weekend

Also, the nostalgia racers will be running in the same heat, but split start.

Ian, can you provide directions on how to get there for those that don't know where it is? (cough....like me....cough) :)

Still hoping I can make it, so far, so good.  Most of the moving will happen on Friday, so I have Saturday to unpack.

Sure.  East on I-70 to exit 316 (Byers).  North (turn left) until you see the track on the left (approx. 23 miles from the interstate).

On a side note, be careful on the road out to the track, the CSP keeps a keen eye on that stretch of road.

We are getting ready to head out to the track.  If anyone planning on coming out wants to call and verify conditions, please call my cell at 720.270.2147.  Please be aware that reception out there is spotty, or I may be on track, so please leave a message and I'll do my best to get back to you quickly.

Give him a call Mike, my guess is there isn't much web access available.

Isn't there a NASA event this weekend?

Yes, the first post kind of highlights that. :)

However, it is open to spectators I believe. The plan is to be out there for the scheduled lunch.

I'm not gonna make it due to a delayed Quinci pick up due to snow, and more unpacking.

Lol, you'd think I would've learned to read before I post by now ;)

Jay, if you can't get the car out, I can pick you up since I'm down the street. Call me if you want a ride.

Any pictures from today's events?  Really wanted to go, but had a lot of unpacking to do, and had the fun of re-wiring a 33 year old thermostat with a new one to go along with my new furnace.  Once I figured out they had wires crossed when they replaced the furnace, everything worked perfectly!!! :).  Really want to see pics from today, so hopefully someone will post them up.

i had my camera but did not take any pictures. primarily because i was focused on staying upright. :D

Erik Melander was taking pictures of the racing.

I really enjoyed getting to take 3 low speed laps. What a great track.

So did you guys see my old Mars Red GTI running around the track over the weekend?  I just got an email from the guy that bought it saying that he drove it in the HPDE program - Level 1.  Sounds like he had a lot of fun with the car.

Now I miss it.   :(

I just looked a little closer in Erik's pictures.

Look what's lurking in the background of this picture:

Yeah, we saw it. Mike and I were like, that looks a helluva  lot like your car. Didn't realize you finally sold it.

I sat and spoke with Eric for a bit - very nice guy and had a great time driving.  Car looked great on track, but then I'm a bit biased ;)

I've been meaning to say something about me selling, but I guess I never got around to doing so.  I sold the GTI and my 1991 Jeep Cheokee to buy a Dodge truck.  One of my kids is in Westernaires, and has a horse.  I needed something more substantial than the Jeep to tow a horse trailer.

I'm kind of bummed about selling both vehicles, as I liked each of them.  I just don't have room for (or time to maintain) everything I want, though.

I still have my Jetta Wagon 1.8T, so that might get a chip and some suspension upgrades this summer.  Maybe I'll get a chance to go to a HPDE with the Jetta to see if I kept the right car.

Eric did seem like a good guy.  I was happy that the GTI went to him (he really seemed to appreciate what the car was) than some 16 YO kid who would probably just wrap it around a tree.
