Title: another round of mods!
Post by: aowhaus on August 02, 2004, 08:17:02 AM
I'm already getting bored with my car, so I decided to drop the dough and go through another round of significant mods, so this is what I have planned for this month:

- Replace cracked OEM wood Tip shifter with a Touareg/Phaeton leather/wood shifter.  The leather strip will be replaced with matching brushed aluminum as my interior.
- Audi-style chrome trunk edge trim to give a little more chrome to the rear and to better blend the trunk with the bumper.
- Phaeton aluminum pedals.  A more sporty look down there, easier to clean than the stock black waffle pedals.
- Repaint car (taking it in tomorrow!).  The body shop will fix all those misaligned panels and sagging/oversprayed paint that the last body shop botched a few years ago, all of the major scrapes/scratches will be removes (mostly on the rear bumper and fenders).  And lastly the roof panel will be painted gloss black to integrate the windshield with the back glass and to make the sunroof disappear ( la Mercedes panorama roof and Porsche Targa).  Two strips of chrome trim will run from the base of the windshield to the trunk at the outer edges of the black roof panel ( la BMW 7-series and Maxima SE).
- Under the hood, the crank pulley will be replaced with a lightweight aluminum one from ECS, also a SSP electronic fan and APR snub mount will be installed -- these mods will free up some HP to the engine, and the snub mount would add a more solid and sporty feel.
- PIAA sports horn.  Better sounding and louder than stock -- one tone on my stock horn works part of the time.

Whew, I hope I could get this done by the big GTG this month.  This is pretty much it for mods this year.

Sounds like you have plans for things that have been bothering you for a while, it always feels good to get those things out of the way that just bother you everytime you notice them(bad paint/misaligned panels) Good luck with everything

Alan, what body shop are you using?  I need to get a little work done too and am looking for a good shop.  Let me know if they do a good job for ya.

- the other Alan

P.S.  Have you checked to make sure you won't have problems by having both the underdrive pulley and the electric fan kit?  You should search around to see if anyone else with both has issues with the electrical system being overworked.  You'll probably be ok as long as you don't install some huge thumpin' stereo.

Hey Alan,

The underdrive pulley is not powered and the electronic fan draws little electricity so I don't think there will be any electrical conflicts -- I believe Pat did the same thing to his car.

Perry & Terry (8th and Speer) is doing the paint work, and Champagne Motors is doing the work under the hood (they also worked on Pat's car).

Perry & Terry did a good job on my door where some sonofabitch backed into me a few weeks after I bought it and then took off without a note or  apology. Tore my mirror in half and gave me an ass-sized dent/scrape just beneath it. I would say so far, they do a good job with smaller work at, from what I understand, fair prices.

We'll see how well they do with the big stuff after Alan gets his car back.

Woo hoo, finally got my car back from Perry & Terry, and the work looks really nice.  The only thing they messed up on was the rear headliner which they didn't quite install it right, preventing the rear sunshade from being fully drawn.

I'll install a bag of LED bulbs and the chrome trim strips for that finishing touch tonight.
My Touareg/Phaeton tip shifter arrived yesterday and I have a feeling that this mod is not going to work -- the sqaure chrome shaft was not included and I don't think my large round shaft could fit into the small elliptical hole of the new shifter.
I also did a really stupid mistake of pressing the shifter button before I installed it -- I can't get it to pop back out again, argh!

My Passat will be sent out again tomorrow to Champagne Motors for some engine and miscellaneous mods (maybe they could help me with the Tip shifter).  I know this is leaving to the last minute just before our big GTG.

Excellent use of the word "shaft" and "hole" with you making it sound dirty! - LOL

I wish I could say my large round shaft couldn't fit in a non-car conversation!  :-(
