Title: update 9/30 - Turbo sounds like Supercharger??? HELP
Post by: kraut-sled on September 27, 2004, 09:12:44 AM
My 2003 1.8T is making a very odd sound.  As I drive and the engine RPM’s climb, my engine and/or turbo make the sound of a supercharger.  It is not a defining sound but it is loud enough to hear clearly.  I have inspected the engine visually and I have not found any obvious cause.

I have 53,000 miles on the car, and I have been religious with maintenance and care of it.  I drive it hard and run 91 or higher in it at all times.  The sound started Saturday PM and it is getting a little louder (or I am listening for it more) each day.  I have not noticed any loss of power, boots or performance in the car, just the noise.

What could be the cause of my new sounding engine?  I love the sound of a well tuned supercharger, just not coming for a turbocharged engine.

TIA
 - Randy

Does this happen with cooler weather?  Under wat circumstances does it happen?  Is it intermitent?  Is the engine knocking?

It is constant and it just started on Saturday.

I have not noticed any knocking or lack of power / perfor.

Thinking it might be boost leak, tubro bearing wear, or a belt...

I think Turbo bearing....maybe related to oil sludge and improper cooling/lubrication?  That is covered under extended warranty.  Do you know any mechanics that can help you diagnose the issue?  To save on the dealer over charging since you are out of warranty....

Maybe time for timing belt, since that is do at 60K anyway...can a water pump make those sounds?

Well, this sounds like my time to chime in.
Since I've owned my car, I get a whistling/whine sound that starts at about 2500 and dissappears at about 3k.

This ONLY occurs when the temperature drops below 55-60 and disappears when my car is warmed up.

Same thing or no? I don't know if your car does the same, but it might be the same thing. I have no loss of power and no other problems. Just chalked it up to cold weather car noise.

JR, your issue sounds like the timing belt tensioner (but you replaced all that so most likely not), but it could also just be your turbos.  When your engine is cold (until the oil gets warmed up) your turbos will always be noticeable louder which is why you should push your car until the oil gets warmed up. So you will hear a lot more noise during that period.

I will be looking into the belts and vac hoses tonight.  I will also be asking my friend who is a mechanic to look / listen to see what he thinks.

I do not think it is a weather related issue, but I will find that out in time too.

I have some VW dealer credit, maybe I have a use for it now...

Hmm...sorry to hear that Randy. Hopefully it'll get worked out. I was hoping it'd be the same thing 'cause then you wouldn't have to worry so much about it. (I'm not that picky and in summers I don't hear anything ;) )

EDIT: Just read your post over on CB5 and I'm praying it's not your turbo going out. If it is: go with a KO4 then have a beer with Mac&Cheese and lament that fact that you have a fast car but no money.

My sound is normal however I've deduced via CB5.

Let us know what happens..

Would a bad DV do this to my car?  I have never had one go on me so I do not know.

Thoughts...

Doubt it. You'd be getting intermittent boost if it was your DV and the sound wouldn't be constant. At least, mine wasn't when it went.

Well it is not my turbo :D

It is my timing belt or the bearing in my clutch.  I will know soon as, my car is being disected as I type this.

Keep your fingers crossed.... :?

It is at Auto Imports off Federal.  HTe owner Chris is a great guy adn I have always had excellent service there.

The bill is TBD, but I am just mentally preparing myself.  I expect about $700.00 on the low and $900.00 on the high end.

I would have done this myself, but I do not have the time this week and I need the car for the weekend to go to a wedding.  But most importantly, I do not want to risk a TB break and a totalled engine.

I hear ya Randy, I wanted to do it myself, but it would void my warranty. :(
