Title: Custom refillable cabin air filter in the works!
Post by: aowhaus on November 10, 2004, 03:24:33 PM
After being disappointed that a aftermarket high performance air cabin filter does not exist for a B5.5 (only OEM paper ones are available), and a visit to the Home Depot, an excellent idea came to mind:

Refillable air filters!
3M just came up with a furnace filter that is refillable (the frame is made of plastic instead of cardboard and could be unsnapped open to replace just the pleated filter portion).  I'm thinking I could do the same thing to my car and it would be cheaper to maintain and offer excellent filtering performance.
3M sells the best performing furnace filters which traps pollen, allergans, dust, dander and other pollutants and it should work very well as a car cabin filter.  A 20"x24" filter panel costs around $12.00, which is enough material to make several refills.  Anyone could cut the refills to size and slide it into the plastic frame -- how cheap and easy is that?
Considering an OEM filter costs $17-20, this would be a great economical mod.

I'm thinking of producing a prototype for my car and if it works I could make a limited production for B5.5's, and later on B5's.

I'm planning on making a small quantity, so getting the plastic frame fabricated might get pricey.
I'm thinking of molding it in rubber so that there is more flexibility in the fitment and it will also provide a better seal (like the K&N).
Thanks anyways!

Alan, if you want to, maybe we can add those to what Chas sells and the CF belly pans.  I am going to set up a website to sell this stuff and I was going to ask Chas to see if he would be interested in us hosting his products too.

What do you think??

I am in for this BTW...I need one bad and have been disappointed too.

So how is this project comming Alan?

I need a new filter myself, and I have a hard time shelling out $20 for the oem paper ones.
