Title: UPDATE !!! - Dyno day GTG?
Post by: kraut-sled on January 10, 2005, 11:19:17 AM
I think we should try to plan a dyno day GTG.  I would like to know what I have HP and Torque wise in my car, as I am sure others would.

Can anyone suggest a place that has a dyno, that we might be able to make a deal?  I think if we can get enough people together this would be a fun day.

What-ch tink??

I think Mac autosports has a dyno that they might be willing to work something out on, I think there's a place down in Parker too...I read about it in another thread.
However, it's about $60 or so for a three-run dyno, so it may not be worth it to get a deal. That's the same price as a half-day at the track.
Anyway, I'd be very down, but not until after my installs in Feb. So if you go before, that's cool, if not than just go by myself ;)

I think this is a great idea. I'd love to know what my REAL numbers are all things considered.

Ya gotta figure they are lower than the hype suggests and people are always asking. Plus, I'd like to see what the real before/after differences are with the exhaust I'm planning on installing here in the very near future.

There's a place out here in Aurora that I've dyno'ed my car at before. Paragon Tuning. I know the guys there and they might be willing to work something out. I'd have to talk them up. Having real numbers of people who are truely interested in doing this would be a very helpful bit of ammo when I go in to talk to them. They have a very new DynoJet 248c. They are the same place I and Rusty bought our FMICs from. They're mainly a Honda tuning shop, but they are truely cool fellows that never turn up their noses at anyone choice of cars. One of the owners like to mess around with SuperCharged M5s! So they do speak German, if you know what I mean.

I really would like to see what my car is putting out now as well. The last time I had it done was a while ago and there have been many mods since. Back then the car put down 178.2WHP and 226.2 WTq. I would hope the mods have only increased those numbers, but I'd like to see!

I ask them about it if you guys are serious.

I would like to do a dyno day.  We need to make sure that the dyno is an AWD dyno. The one in Parker is. Not sure about the others.

Twice the power needs twice as many wheels to put it to the ground.

I meant to say Castle Rock. Mac is the only one on Parker...I'm definately serious, but as I said, it wouldn't be till the end of Feburary. I have to get a few more things in the car

So lets start a list of people that want to do this:

Randy
JR & Tish
Andrew - 34K
Chas
Cole
Tweakedub
Jason
Mark & Lisa

Vortex folks:

lithguy
GTurboI
Hugh Gordon
eurowner
Spykstra
ianacole

I also think late Feb or early March is a good time.  Any suggestions for specific dates?

Post by: Chas on January 11, 2005, 11:03:39 AM
As far as AWD dynos, there are only a couple choices out there. One is located in Ft. Collins if my memory serves me correctly and I thought the other was in Parker. But maybe Pat will chime in on this and let us know.

The one I suggested is not an AWD dyno, but a good one.

As for dates, I say lets try to do this toward the end of February. That way we can really flesh this out and allow some folks a chance to get some mods done. I'm sure we could make this a big event if we worked on it. Maybe we could include this into one of the things we done every year, much like the annual RMCB5 National GTG where we have a track day event. We have a repution for throwing big GTG parties and doing them well, why not this too?

Winston, Jay any thoughts?

I am certainly up for this.  GIAC has finally put into production the W8 chip, and I will be updating my ECU this spring.  I would love to do a dyno before and after.  I too need AWD...

I agree that this shoud meet our usual high standard for GTG's.  It will be fun and usefull information to have.

If you guys can, post the names and numbers of places that have Dyno's.  If you have a connection, please call them and see what they say.  If not, I would be happy to call and see what we can put together.

MAC is definitely an AWD dynomometer.  They charge $65 for 3 AWD pulls.  $55 for FWD.  They are in Parker and are busy.

Make an appointment.

Also, I would wait until spring since the winter gasoline here has 10% ethanol added which will reduce your output.

Both Pat and my WRX buddy Bill have been there.

Yes. Spring is good. Even at the price I don't need a discount. I've called them a few times about different odds and ends and they really nice and helpful.
Tish said she's wanting some more juice out of her Jetta...so she may be on the list too.

I use this place over on Parker road for Gas. JR turned me onto it. They sell 93.5 octane gas at prices better than most places sell 87 octane gas!

I'd load up on that stuff before doing the dyno.

Maybe the hot air is fine for you non-turbo cars but I would like a nice cold day myself :D

I have been to MAC in Parker. I went out there with several other Audi guys. Lots of fun, nice guys.

There is a 100octain pump at I-25 and bellview. Not cheap ($4.50 gallon) but if you want to artificially boost your numbers that is the way to do it.

I myself would like to know "Real" numbers. Meaning I want to know what I put down on the gas I normally run.

For all those none chipped people that might want to chip (myself included)...Group Buy on chip?

Maybe if we knew someone at Avalon motorsports we could have them sponsor a GB on chips!

Just thinking out loud.  I would be interested if I am chipped by then or chipped on that day (before and after #'s).

You guys...!!!

Anyhow, yeah, I always run the 93.5 octane stuff. There is a difference between the crappy 91 stuff you can get anywhere and the 93.5 stuff at this small place off Parker & Quincy. So I'll get the numbers I want to see, real data. And this place is cheaper than anywhere else. He sells the 93.5 stuff for less than the big names sell the 91 octane gas. It's a win/win situation.

So, have we set any real dates yet?

Post by: kraut-sled on February 08, 2005, 11:10:33 AM
I have just spoken to Bill at MAC, and here are the details:

$50.00 for 3 pulls - including air/fuel
10 people minimum is needed for this.

They will have their tuner available for the following rates:
2WD - $60.00 per 1/2 hour
4WD - $70.00 per 1/2 hour.
This is the minimum charge and they bill in 15 minute increments.

Available dates are March 5th, 19th, and 26th.

I am in, so 9 more and this is a go.

I'm in if it's the 19th or 26th. I can't do the 9th (work). That will give me a chance to get my exhaust done or something.
It would be WAY cool if it was the 26th as my dad's gonna be in town and he's a car nut and would love to be there.

I would like to come up on the 26th and join you for the dyno day, but can't commit yet.  Would it be OK if I joined in with 1-2 weeks notice?  Or would it screw up the dyno operator's scheduling?

[wishful thinking]
By then I might have my fuel mgmt installed and put all you "chippers" to shame...*poke**grin*
[/wishful thinking]

Chas, you gonna have that baro mod installed by then?  Wouldn't it be a b*tch if it turned out like the injectors did (i.e. didn't work)?  I am very curious to see how the baro mod affects a chipped car...

I like the 26th as well! Count me in too! $50 for three runs sounds great!

Rusty- You'd love to see it not work on my car wouldn't you?! ;) :) That would just validate your choice of not chipping! HA! I'm going to do it soon, maybe...

I've got a light wieght crank pulley to install first. There's a few ponies to be had with that little mod. I've only had that stupid pulley sitting in my garage for several months now. I finally got the new (correctly drilled) version and I've been putting it off. Like the headlamp leveling switch I still need to do. That and I want to get a new rear muffler. Maybe...

It's winter and I hate working on cold wet, cars. I'm a pussy, I know...

For clarification, this is March 26. Scott had just mentioned that they were going to have REVO sponsership deals at DATR on June 26. So if you could wait to get chipped until June instead of March for the Dyno Day, that's an option.

There is not a schedule with MAC - we have the whole day.  As for RMCB5 memebers wanting a specific time, I think that would be a good idea.  I will contact MAC and see how long it takes to dyno one car and then we can make a schedule for us to use here.

look for an update tomorrow.

How many cars do we have so far? Too many and this could take all day. I know Mac would like to see a lot, but there is only so many hours in a day. And I'd hate to be the last guy right before the folks from Mac want to go home. Or worse yet, someone doesn't get a chance at all. Maybe we should limit the number of cars.

Randy, ask your contact from Mac how many cars can they do in a day. I'm sure they've seen this kind of group in the past and have some experience with these kind of events.

TIME DETAILS!!!

MAC is open on the 26th from 10am - 7pm.  Bill said that it takes 30 minutes to do one car.  That is set-up, run, and tear-down.  That means we have to limit the cars to 18.  So the times run every half hour.

Official Time sign-up sheet:

10:00 - Kraut-Sled - I will set the bar  (200HP/215T)
10:30 - 34K (183HP/202T)
11:00 - Madigan
11:30 - Shummer (170HP)
12:00 - Cole
12:30 - Ian Cole - 'tex
1:00 - Sarah in the 337
1:30 - Coveredbytheblood (190HP/210T)
2:00 - JDawg in the W8 (214.5HP/216T)
2:30 - Tweakedub
3:00 - Ken Wallace - 719's fastest GLi
3:30 - Chas (190HP/225T)
4:00 - Spicoli (195HP/215T)
4:30 - Cole's Friend in the C55 AMG
5:00 - DenverNoob (Ted from AW)
5:30
6:00
6:30

Let me know what time you want.  Also please come a little early and plan for a possible delay of 15-20 minutes.  We will endevor to hit the times above, but please understand this is not an exact science.

One thing that will help is that you are there on time, if you are not there, we will skip you and move on.  I will be there all day and helping make sure the person on deck is ready to go.

Also for the sake of getting all those interrest in participating, please do not plan on doing any tuning on the dyno, that will throw off the schedule.  If the Dyno reveals that tuning is needed, please make a seperate apointment with MAC for that. - THANKS

Thanks - Randy

Yeaaaaaaaaahh, so i just read your car profile... I'm VERY curious about what you would pull with all that stuff. Impressive collection of goodies there -pretty darn complete list. You've done a LOT of what I was thinking about or have already done with my GTI and i'd be interested to hear your thoughts on your set-up.

Have you tracked it with that front 25mm sway? Is it pushing pretty badly with the bigger front sway and front strut tower brace? I have many many questions for you and how you went about your car. It's very nice!  :)

the difference comes from what is known as drive train losses.  Manufacturer hp specs are taken on an engine dyno and measured at the crank.  dyno day results for your car are measured at the wheels.  so the power made by the engine has to go through the clutch, transmission, differentials, axles, and u-joints.  every time there is a part change there is opportunity for friction which will convert power to heat, or slop which will convert power into momentum of something other than the forward motion of the car.

Oh, and to make things more confusing, modern dyno's don't measure hp at the wheels.  they actually measure torque at the wheels, and calculate hp from that.

see here:

http://www.revsearch.com/dynamometer/torque_vs_horsepower.html

I'd like to go with One Dollar Bob.

My guess,

183 hp
202 ft lb

Okay, difference between Flywheel vs. Wheel HP... I'm guessing someone else will chime in before me, which is good because I bet I get this wrong...

It's basically where the HP is measured.

Measuring it at the flywheel is going to give you a higher number because it doesn't take into account drive train loss or accessories like fans and power steering and big booming stereos (ie. alternator power) etc. It gives you the raw potential output of the engine.

Wheel measurements is when you measure the actual power being put to your drive wheels. This is a real-world sampling of what your car is doing and is far more valuable since it takes into account everything or most everything going on with your car. This number is going to be considerably lower.

It differs between cars, transmissions, rear drivers, front drivers and all wheel drivers as to how much loss but I hear mostly between 20-30% loss of flywheel hp.

The dyno will only measure wheel hp, so that's the number we're all talking here. Hope that helps.

Maybe someone can tell us more specifically how much drive train loss there is on our specific cars?

All of these things taken into consideration I am curious where everyone gets thier numbers.  Mainly companies like REVO for instance.  I found my numbers on thier website from their dyno plots.  Are these not accurate?  Or are they measured in a different way than the whp?

COmpanies talk about flywheel horsepower... which if you took your engine out and also had it at sea level, then you would put out somewhere around there.  Wheel horsepower you lose a certain percent (FWD is the least, RWD is a very close 2nd, AWD has the most loss).  We also live at 5k-6000 ft above sea level.  Even though we have forced induction (turbo), we still have hp and torque loss from the lack of air.

Another thing most companies do, is use 93 octane, since it is the standard at lower elevation.

Give you an example, I know I am around 200whp (but I don't think quite 200), but if I went to sea level and pulled my engine out, I think I would have about 240hp-250hp at the flywheel.

Does that help?

Here are a few things to think about.

The HP measured on the dyno is a raw wheel number. The dyno measures how hard and fast your car can accelerate the dyno rollers.

This does not directly correspond to usable HP.  After the dyno run you should figure out your power to weight ratio. This is actually a more useful number.

For example a 1,400lb Lotus Elise with 140hp should accelerate the same as a 3,500 Audi S4 with 350hp.

The other thing to think about. The dyno at MAC is corrected for altitude. So the numbers it gives you will be sea level equivalents.

corrected... that sucks... is there a way they can set it so it gives you actually hp?  not corrected... i would like to know what my car is actually doing, not what it would do at sea level.

And, does it correct differently for turbo/SC/NA?

I'm working on a new CAI of my car. I don't know if it'll be done in time for the dyno day. But it might be an interesting thing to see the before and after HP numbers for this mod.

ABD just released their version of a CAI for the 1.8T Passat/A4 and it looks very nice. So nice in fact that I'm trying to copy it. I have the filter already and am waiting on the 3" diameter pipes from JCWhitney.com to arrive. And the actual hardest part of this whole mod is mostly done and waiting to have it's finishing touches put on. The heat shield. It's HUGE! and covers more area than most sold by aftermarket manufactures. Also, this design will incorporate as much of the factory parts as I can. Including the stock air feed tube and the plastic cover over the top of the airbox. I just want it to look stockish at first glace.

Here's the ABD offering.

Hmm...can't take the heat. ;) I'm not pissed about anything...doggone typed forums...can't hear voice inflections.
I didn't mean to offend you or 'cause anything to burst into flames. Sooooo...

From experience, his Zender matches his car. Chas seems to think that there's too much blue, but I couldn't see any difference. Also, the aluminum in his car is very well-crafted a nice looking aluminum that I must say improves the performance of the car where used, namely suspension, engine bay and front bumper.

His car employs numerous handsome mods from HID headlamps to removed resonator in the muffler. His lightweight crank pulley is indeed a long time in coming as I remember the original replacement being last Feburary durning the timing belt changeover.

With that said, my injectors don't make my car idle funny in anyway. I have noticed some issues when the car is cold, but not at idle, but the disappear once the car is adequately warmed up. My Passat maybe badly tuned, but I really have anything that needs to be "tuned."

And we shall how well we all do come a week from Saturday. Now that the fight is duely broken up, I'm going to go pick a fight somewhere else. :D

Randy, you crack me up.

However, Chas is one of the orginal founding outlaws of RMCB5. I feel like we're running him off. This club is brotherhood with the occasional razzing. I didn't mean to start anything...I was just playing :?

Rusty - you break my heart, but I understand...

Man, I so wanted to be there:

...But damn.  I know a lot of people wanted to see how my tinkering stacked up against chipping, head-to-head.  I wanted to see it, too.  dammit...  damn tranny gone bad in wife's truck.  If it wasn't for that, I'd risk the bald tires and bad CA's to come up there.  When it rains, it pours...

Next step will be for me to hit you up on the email dyno and see what those numbers look like compared to what I get on Saturday.

Randy, maybe we could ask everyone who is coming to do a little printed sheet of all the mods they have done to their cars and put it up in the window for all to see. Sometimes the mods we do to our cars aren't that noticeable. It might be fun for other to see and compair what other folks have.

Just an idea I had today while driving around...

I think that is an excellent idea!  DV's and injectors are examples of mods that are not "visable" but have an inpact.  As do things like Big Brakes and aftermarket rotors - weight of these effect power to the wheels.

So to all who are comming - list of mods in the window of your car, please.

It could also save you some time on telling people what you've done to your car. As for me, I can never remember all the things I've done to it. So it could help in that regard as well.

Okay, so now that I have the M3, I am thinking of doing the DYNO on that instead, because that is the car I am going to mod more seriously than the W8.  What are everyone's thoughts on that?  Would you mind if I did that instead of the VW?

I would have a problem with it. Jason, do what you want. I say Dyno the M3.

dyno them both.  I'm gonna stick with 180 as my guess cause i have no idea what to guess.  Too bad no exhaust for the dyno, we'll have to plan another dyno day at the end of summer to see how everyone's mods have done.  It's gonna be so much fun.

Jason it is your $$$ so dyno what ever car you want.  I think the M3 is a better choice, seeing as that is the car you are going to mod in the future.  Would be good to know where you are starting from.  There are still some times in the afternoon if you want to run them both.

Why yes I did.  :D

Last weekend I put a K03s and 3" turboback also.  Lovin it, but I keep blowing a hose off.  The silicon 90 on the turbo outlet had to be trimmed to fit the new turbo and I can't keep a clamp on it.  I should have a new one tomorrow so that little problem will be fixed.

Car feels great when it stays though.

How have you been?
