Title: Aesthetic mod of the day: Painting your rear view mirror
Post by: ColoradoB5 on January 11, 2005, 12:41:48 PM
So for my 2000 B5, the interior below the window-line is all black.  Above that it's grey.  When you look in through the front window, everything is black, except the damned rear view mirror.

I never could stand that, so in a fit of cheap mod fever last weekend, I took the sucker out and painted it flat black.  That made a huge difference.  I will post some pics tomorrow, but I can't believe I didn't do this earlier.

Is that cureable or is it a life long disease?

I never noticed this, but I am sure it will stick out like crazy now!!  Thanks Winston

Ha!  Sure Randy.  I have found that this is an incurable disease, but you can learn to live with it.

First off, you will need to talk about it frankly with any loved ones: "Now hon, I need to tell you about my mod disease.  No this isn't something I picked up on that trip to Borneo.  I need to mod my car and I need your support.  But first, I need the credit card, baby!"

I'd thought about doing that, since you can buy the black ones for stupid sums of money and painting seemed like a much better solution.

Looking forward to seeing how that turned out!

They turned out really well, but I haven't taken a pic yet.

Here's a good picture of the old style though:

That drove me nuts too with our GTI    I looked and looked and could not find a cheap way to fix it.

So..... here is what I did...

The best solution I couldcome up with was to buy an S4. Seems to be the only B5 that came with a black upper interior AND a black rear view mirror. Then I became so focused on the fact that it had a rear view mirror I had to tint the front window.  :D  :D

I think your mod may have been a cheaper route, thanks for the tip. I will keep it in mind for the future :D  :D

(good idea, I like to see cool cheap mods that anyone can do.)

That's a good one Cole.  Actually, you can put the barest tint on the front window and you will dramatically change the look from the outside.

If it weren't illegal, I would do it...okay so I may do it anyway, but in the meantime, here is the new one along with my no blind spot clip on:

I know a guy that used a special paint to paint the interior fabric black, so that may be my next one.

BTW: I know it's old, but my mirror was already black.

I did that like 4 years ago. I was originally concerned with peeling and scratches, biut none materialized. I put on 3 coats of semigloss paint.

I would love to do that in my car. Let me know what you find out.
