Title: Turbo Timer
Post by: coveredbytheblood on January 18, 2005, 08:39:32 AM
Does anyone have any recomendations for a good turbo timer.  I also have some general questions.  Can I hop back in the car and drive if it is still cooling?  Will my alarm, or anti theft be altered because of the timer?  Anyone ever install one by themself?

I took mine to Mac and yes you can drive while it's still counting down.  I have an HKS which just has to be hard wired in.  Some come with harnesses which would probably make it easier to install yourself.  I didn't do mine myself cause i didn't want to pay for a new ignition if i screwed something up.  Mac only charged 60 bucks.  My stock alarm still works fine.

Yours was pretty sweet too.  Good food for thought.  Thanks sarah.

I don't know how much you are set on getting TT, but IMO oil coking is pretty much a non-issue with modern turbo cars. There was issue with 98 B5's that had smaller oil lines and bad oil line shield design, but that was solved with new shield and bigger inner diameter oil lines.
On top of all if you are using synthetic oil then you don't have to worry at all. If OTOH the TT is just another new toy, then go ahead I know the feeling :)

Actually Boris, I just thought it might be a good idea when I upgrade to the KO4.  I was planning on doing a turbo kit and thought that it might be a good idea.  I only want this for functionality not really a toy.  I would rather spend the money elsewhere if not necessary.  :)

I use mine for when i'm late to work so i drive like a maniac to get there and turn off the car and run in instead of waiting for a cool down.  Its also fun for people that don't know that tt's exist.  Um excuse me your car is still running...but then again its kinda hard explaining it to some people, like my grandma, that was hard.  I also picked up mine for 20 bucks so it works out, and one of these days i'll have a bigger turbo.

Such a common dream

anyways another advantage to the Terb timer is that on a cold morning you can out out and start your car and then set the timer to like 5 minutes. Shut your ignition off and lock the door with the key, Walk away

Actually your KO4 will put out less heat than the KO3 you have in now. Bigger impeller means it pushes more air with less strain so less kinetic energy is transformed to heat energy. Like I said, IMO TT is PITA since you are splicing in the CAN BUS wiring, and with synthetic oil use you really don't need it. Synthetic oil bases and the additives in the oils these days are engineered to resist deterioration and have excellent thermal properties. So coking is really not in the picture unless your car has sludge problem or your oil pump is failing. In that case nothing will help. It's lot different now than it was 20 or even 10 years ago.
As for starting the car and leaving it idling, alas w/o the ignition key, is IMO not a good idea. I'm sure that some thiefs are familiar with the concept of TT, but most are not and only see running engine. ;)

alright, now you guys are just trying to make me feel old again.

I'll take solace in knowing that a couple of folks around here are a little older than I.
