did you guys see this article?  OK, so the 0-60 is a little slow, but the car is still pretty impressive

Probably the most unreliable V8 ever made.  Cool project, but I may have chosen a different motor.

I've had two 928's, and still have an S4.  Those motors are great, my 86 had over 200k miles on it and ran like a bear.  My S4 is a baby with only 108K on the clock.  My brother also has a 928S4 he just supercharged, they take to it quite well.  You see a lot of high mileage 928s cause they just keep on going.  Just change the timing belt every 50K or so.

Maybe in the later models. We had a 1978 928 that we bought new and the first 45 days we owned the car it was in the shop for 30. This trend never stopped. The car was very well taken care of but in the shop all the time for not running right.

(we did keep it to 109,000 miles though because it was such a fun car when it ran :D )

It's true I'm not as familiar with Old Buggers as they are known.  the engines themselves though are quite sturdy.  There may have been some issues with the CIS but in general it's a good system.  The OB motors, being cheap and producing decent HP, have been used for some interesting conversions.  For example several 914s are running around with the 928 V8 jammed in there, um, sideways.  This is done mainly because they want more power and in order to run at Porsche Club events they have to have a Porsche engine in a Porsche chassis (but I wonder if they look the other way at the 912's with the VW conversion?)

Were I to look at a conversion I'd look at a 1.8T or Vr6 into an ur-GTi.  those cars got moving with 100HP, another hundred and it'd be pretty sporty indeed.
