Title: 2 Years...and my car's a killjoy.
Post by: jayryan on March 30, 2005, 07:02:01 AM
Not only was Santino's closed permanently (make a note Shummer). But my car started making this funny noise right as I let out the clutch.  8O
I either let it out fast, or rediculously easy. It's sort of this dry sound. Only happens in first gear and from a stop.

Then it starts to sound like I have an unlubricated pulley or belts are loose or something. More of that dry sound again. It is sporadic, but occurs enough to make me cringe.

Then there's this chirping sound when I'm above 2K rpm. Kind of coordinates with the dry sound, but I hear mostly all the time. Seems to be in sync with the RPM. RPM goes up, chirping sound gets faster and vice versa. This bird was sporadic too.

Of course, my wife only heard these a couple times, me though? I heard them almost all the time. It was enough that I'm a little upset that I have to take my car apart again to look for it and check stuff.

The frustrating thing is that I opened the hood when I got home and gave it a couple revs from the engine side and didn't hear anything :x Makes it a little hard to fix when I can only hear it from inside the car. I do however have a place to start. I had an unaffixed braket that some tech forgot to secure before I got the car....it's an odd thing I can tell you about in a different post if you desire.      :?

Happy anniversary to me.

That was my initial thinking but how? I know I can pick one up for cheap...but I've never had to deal with clutches other than a Ford pickup.

It's annoying because I'm not hard on the clutch at all.

Would you consider it a chatter?

...possibly. But it's more like a dry rubbing. But yes, there does seem to be some chatter. If you want, we could hook up and you could take a listen if you know what you're listening for ;)
I need that thing from you too :D

I have to clarify though that the other two problems seem to be unrelated to the clutch.

Sounds like someone is having some slipping issues with their clutch.  Save up immediatly for a new clutch disc, pressure plate, and flywheel.

Hmm...am I misunderstanding was slippage is then? I'm having no issues with the clutch holding or shifting...there's just the really annoying sound. So that's the initial indication then?
In any case I'm hooking up with Avalon tomorrow for a listen.

My clutch sometimes squeals, since its a crappy Spec Stage 2 peice.  Sometimes at low engagement, it will squeal but I still dont have issues with it slipping at all until I get at it at WOT and heavy, quick shifting.

Im willing to bet that its the clutch getting ready to go out.  Year of your car and current miliage?

'99 73.5K...it's old enough. I just informed my wife that this could be a possibility and she said, "It's okay. Clutches go out and since we like nice import European cars, they cost a little more."

...not bad. When I replace, I'll most likely go OEM as I don't need anything heavier duty. My HP is low enough and I'm not hard on the clutch. Well, there is the once a month or so mountain drive...\

It's funny. The only responses I get are from a guy almost 3000mi. away.

Not bad man, atleast your wife understands.  74k miles, I think, is pretty good for clutch life.  I went a little over 107k miles iirc on my stock original clutch, but lots of highway miles so it does help it last a little longer.  And for your application a simple resurface on the stock flywheel and a new pressure plate, throwout bearing, and disc should be less then $450 at the most.  Just be sure to get a nice Sachs unitand you should be fine.

Lemme know how it goes man.

Well you got responses from people locally before you got a response from someone 3000 miles away.  Maybe local people don't have an answer to your question?

Two locals helped troubleshoot and our friendly nieghbor to the east finished off some diagnosis with a prescription to save up.  I think that is a bang up job by folks spread out throught the state and the nation.

I guess I'm not sure where your comment is coming from, maybe there were other posts before Scott and Jason that dissappeared.

My MINI was making sounds like that, and I had a bad clutch, so from that experience, I would say, clutch....but unless i heard it in person, hard to say.
