Title: Anyone know what to do with this thing?
Post by: ianacole on April 11, 2005, 07:33:27 PM
Seriously, though, if anyone has installed one of these in a MKIV before, I'd welcome any advice, suggestions, help...

Thanks,

It is for an O2J, but it's mine...all mine....MWAAAHAAAHAAAA  :D I do plan on installing it myself.  I've done plenty of diffs before, but not in a tranny.  I've seen some writeups on it, and it doesn't look insanely difficult.  But I always welcome the input from seasoned and experience backyard (or real) mechanics.  I've had the tranny out before as I replaced the clutch and flywheel, but this is a couple of steps beyond that part.

Ian.
When Joel did mine he had to send it to this place to have it aligned right (think it was an alignment).  I like to do as much as I can on my car (you seem to be able to do more than I am comfortable with), but this is one thing you might want to have installed from people who have the right tools.

Something as precise as tranny work is something that I would leave to the professional as well.  IIRC, there are quite a few special tools required to pull parts of the innerard apart to install the LSD.  You dont want to be halfway through the ordeal, and then find out you dont have the right tools to do it.

Funny, I was just going to start research on which of these to buy for a project perhaps mid summer-ish.

Peloquin and Quaife seem to be the big ones people talk about? I've known about Quaife for a while, but what's the difference between these two products? Another guy I spoke to said something about VW making a LSD at some point and it's supposed to be the "bee's knees"?

Sorry about going OT here, I'm just really curious about the options.

Good luck with the install Ian :D

I purchased the peloquin TBD (not the same as an LSD) based on the discussion here: Peloquin TBD discussion (http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1707265)

I really want to do this on my own, I've done everything on my car myself (except the chip soldering), and I've done a lot of work on my truck (click here to see my truck) (http://www.users.qwest.net/~meganacole/TruckPhotos/TruckPhotos.htm).  However, if it's a reasonable cost to drop off my tranny and have someone else install it, and it is beyond my ability to figure out, I will do so, as this is my daily driver.

I have a Quaife.  They are the same thing.  There is an actual LSD out there by EuroSpec Sport which is a clutch LSD.  The problem with it is our cars have different length axels, so you will actually get more torque steer in daily driving, etc (mainly leaving from a stop).

Aha! Thanks Ian. I saw that GB/Sale a while ago before the descriptions were on there.

Ian, Did you go with a different final drive? If so, why?

Jack, what was the cost to install the Quaife, including R&R?

I don't remember anymore.  But Joel was cheap and I trust him more than any other mechanic.  Generally if I am not doing it myself, he is the only one I trust.  One thing when I had him do mine, I just paid him a little extra to just do the clutch and flywheel at the same time.  It was worth it.  I remember it being around the same price as the quaife itself.

BTW Andrew, I love your car... saw the Andrew's (34k) blah blah blah post

Price was really good (PM me and I'll tell you; not sure they want it really advertised).  I went with the stock final drive ratio...I still use this as my daily driver and spend a lot of time zipping up and down C-470.
