Title: RMCB5 July 9 Drive 2005 -- Planning Thread ***FINAL INFO***
Post by: JDawg on May 23, 2005, 10:21:00 PM
Alright, so it rhymes.  Maybe it is because I am drinking a Corona with limes?  Beer and the day have left one thought on my mind, we should start planning our annual drive! :)

I would like to start the planning for a July time frame drive / RMCB5 annual GTG.  Please respond back with your thoughts on dates, assuming that most people will have other plans for the 4th of July weekend.  Please feel free to suggest anything, including earlier or later time frames.  I just want to get the ball rolling! :)

POINTS OF INTEREST AND DECISION -

1) Drive date  -  July 9th
2) Drive route                   - The Fort to Boulder (http://www.transcendsolutions.com/rmcb5/rmcb5.htm)
3) Drive distance               - About 250 miles
5) Other thoughts...?

WHAT TO BRING -

1) FRS Radio and batteries (if you have one)
2) Full tank of fuel
3) Some good music
4) Helmet  (not really, unless you are riding with me)
5) Money for lunch (about $15) breakfast ($5) and trail ridge ($10)

Final Drive Information

The Fort to Boulder (http://www.transcendsolutions.com/rmcb5/rmcb5.htm)

We will meet up at The Fort off 285 and 470 no later than 9:45 AM on Saturday, and stop at Backcountry Brewery for lunch for 1 1/2 hours. The drive would take about 7 hours or less, depending on how fast we drive. The above calculations use the speed limits. Please PM me with any questions.  I will provide paper maps with better detail at The Fort when we meet up.  Please respond in the headcount thread if you are going so I can let Backcountry know and get the right amount of breakfast goodies.

See everyone then!!!

Jason

Well July is a bit sketchy for me, but I don't really have anything to drive anyway. I am booked the first three weekends of July.

But Jay, if you want something to drive, I would be happy to loan you one of mine for the day so you can enjoy, you just cover cost of gas.

So far it sounds like either the the 9th or 10th and the 30th and 31st of July work for most people.  - Jon, when do you have a weekend off?

actually that would be the 10th, but you know what I mean. One more vote for the 9th. That weekend would work better for me - leaving the last weekend of July for NC.

So LEAD!

Declare one!

Say something like, "On Saturday the 9th of July I am going on a drive.  I'll be leaving from the conoco station off of 470 near bandimere at 8:45 in the morning.  Meet there at 8:30.  I figure on driving for about 6 hours with stops for amazing vistas and good food.  join me if you can."

That ought to get things going.

Yeah, I am thinking of a drive that is not of the normal variety that has a lunch break at a good drinking hole / restaurant.  I wanted to pin down a date before we started talking about the details of the drive.

Any suggestions on drive routes and good eateries?  Anyone want to cross-post on other forums for me?

Well being that it is the Summer in Colorado, planning a LOOOONG  trip with a number of cars might be hard, Especially with heat, and construction. Not sure if any of the routes will be under construction this summer, but it is something to think about.

However, you could do a good lng route that offers bail out points for people that can't do the whole drive.

I think you should drive to Durango via Southern Colorado, up towards Grand Junction and back...in ONE DAY! :)

Okay, lets start talking about some route planning... something that we can start about 8:30 or so and hit up a good eatery along the way... and in the 250 mile range.  A lot of us have done the Estes route several times, so I would like to do something a little different.

i'm 95% in if we do it on a sunday and keep it around 250 miles. I also think the RMNP, Winterpark, estes would be fun.. But then again i have only lived here 2 years so these places are second nature to me.

1 more thing. If you guys are going to be hauling ass, i will have to catch up when you guys stop. My car is pretty slow and i don't need any tickets right now..

It is good to get talking on this again.  I've done the Estes route several times myself, so it would be nice to do something else.  The problem is, naturally, that Colorado does have a lot of cool drives, i.e. scenic byways, but a lot of them are further out. I know one of the recommended drives is the Estes route, up through Nederland.  And then there's Mt. Evans: Idaho Springs has a couple of decent places to eat, if I remember correctly.  Maybe there's a back route down and around.

Sounds good to me, even though I don't know which way that is, or how long the drive is.  I'm starting to get the nagging feeling that we need speed groups, you know, the 20+ MPH Over Group, the 15+ MPH Over Group. I'm going to be in the Under 10 MPH Over Group.

That is one thing we should address.  I personally don't intend to drive excessivly.  In the past, that has just created issues between other drivers on the road, and people within the group.  Most people will have FRS radio's so that we can all stay in contact, and I would like to keep the group together.  What is everyone's thoughts on this issue?  I am sure we will be doing the 10 over thing...

10 over sounds fine to me.  After all, it's a get together, not a stay apart.  hee-hee.

Jury's still out on whether I can actually come to this thing, but I will plan for it and hope for the best.

BTW Jason - you have a very nice car (M3).  I was the designated driver to get it to the track and back for the track day.  What an awesome, confidence-inspiring car.  Not enough headroom for me, but I think you chose well. *thumbs up*

I will not lie.  I have tendancies to speed.  I want to stay with the group so I will...  but it would be nice if the route was somewhat mapped out so those that want to maybe go ahead through some of the more fun sections in the mountains can maybe do so and then pull of, etc to join back up with the group.

If it is felt that this would cause problems within the group and/or for the group I would overcome my urges and stay within 10mph of the limit.

I'm going to bump this up since it would be in four or five days, and it would be cool to know if it is going to happen. I don't even really care so much about the route.  There is scenic stuff everywhere.

In the spirit of contributing and not just bumping, I suggest that we could take a simple route, by heading up through Nederland to Estes Park, and back.  We should be able to find plenty to do. It has been awhile since I last took that route, so I don't remember the exact highway anymore (oops!). But some of you surely know what I am talking about.

Pulling out the map today, and planning the route.  I will plan a stop at some good eatery if everyone is on board for that.  Look for the post later today.

I would love to go, but my mom's in town.
My mom's the worst back seat driver -- it's a good thing she thinks my speedometer is in kilometers per hour.

Ben

And yeah, it is certainly going to happen! :)

While I REALLY need a day away to drive, I don't think it is in the cards for this weekend (unless the weather really bites).

Landscaping calls.

Now then, if you guys want to stop by to drive the bobcat...

That is what you were supposed to be doing the past few weekends so you had some spare time for the drive!!! :)  I totally understand because I have just finished installing my new deck and pathway.  Bobcat??  I needed that last week!

spare time.  hehe, what's that?  this project is going to take me EVERY weekend and most days after work between now and September...

ouch.

http://www.rmcb5.com/ftopic-3115.html (http://www.rmcb5.com/ftopic-3115.html)

this last weekend, I did get the deck stained, and built about 80% of a 3' X 150' retaining wall.  finish the walls this week, so I can backfill next weekend.

Estes or Steamboat would be cool IMHO  8)

____________________________________________________________
Option 1

SUMMARY -
Driving distance:  323.7 miles
Trip duration:  8 hours, 14 minutes
Driving time:  6 hours, 44 minutes
Cost:  $22.66
_____________________________________________________________

Option 2

SUMMARY
Driving distance:  281.6 miles
Trip duration:  7 hours, 24 minutes
Driving time:  5 hours, 54 minutes
Cost:  $19.93

We would meet up at The Fort off 285 and 470, and stop at Backcountry Brewery for lunch for 1 1/2 hours.  The drive would take about 8 hours or less, depending on how fast we drive.  The above calculations use the speed limits.  What are everyone's thoughts?  I am thinking we would meet up and leave The Fort no later than 8:00AM.

Jason

Sounds good.  I got a fly in the ointment right now though.  I may be headed to SCR to get reflashed.  If that falls through, I think we are game.  I will know more tomorrow.

Looks fantastic Jason! Nothing like hitting half a state in one day
I'm partial to number 1 even though both look great.

Jeremy, just drive dude, reschedule the Passat and drive the Subie.

Great job JDawg!  Both drives look great just let me know where and when.  I am not too familiar with the west side of 470, so if anyone could please kinda list some specific directions for myself coming from Pueblo that would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

I vote for route 1, and The Fort @ 8:00 AM it is.

I'd vote for route 2 because it is closer to 250 as well, however, it starts in Loveland, and because I live right next to the starting point in route 1, I think the distances would be approximately the same for me.

I might be able to make the 2nd route; I'd peel off at I-70 halfway through.  Assuming of course I get the clutch done Friday night.

Hey all, I'm afraid I can't join you on the 9th for this drive because I'm already doing 120 miles that day, on my bicycle.  8)  I'm riding in the Triple Bypass (http://teamevergreen.org/HTML_MAIN_PAGES/triplebypass.html) for the first time this year.  So if you guys happen to come upon a bunch of cyclists while you're out on your drive, please give us plenty of space.  You can check the Triple Bypass (http://teamevergreen.org/HTML_MAIN_PAGES/triplebypass.html) website for a map of the ride to see if it overlaps your drive.

Have a good time!

Well, there was a discussion about dates a while ago, and the 9th appeared to be the day.  I had modified the original post showing the 9th some time ago.  Are there other people who feel the 9th is a bad day?

I know it is a little late in the game, but Sunday would be no issue for me to do a drive, all day if available.

Yea.. no worries here about the date.  If I can't get into SCR we are planning on going.  I should know more by Friday at the latest.  If we don't go to SCR the Passat will be sitting and the Subie will be going.
