Title: Er...annoying observation: my car feels very slow.
Post by: jayryan on June 06, 2005, 05:28:28 AM
Over the weekend, I replaced my fuel filter, cleaned my air filter and started on my engine cover and winglet repaint.

As I was waiting for my K&N to dry (overnight  ), I decided to remove the little trap door at the bottom of the airbox. Now, whether or not this plays a roll in my issue I know not. I'm going to to put it back in and see though.

The observation is that my car is sllllloooowww now or at least feeling so. Boost is building, but it's slow. My get up and go slow feels like it takes forever. Throttle response also seems very weak. Everything seems to run in slow motion. My airbox doesn't make that cool screaming/sucking sound anymore. I'm a little annoyed to say the least.

My air filter hadn't been cleaned since last fall and my fuel filter had never been replaced. I guess I was thinking that both of these would actually do the engine good which makes me wonder if that little trap door is a little more important that I was thinking. Has anyone else had this problem?

That trap door is an odd piece.  It's spring loaded but it seems like it would take a sucking power of a vacuum to open it up, which I doubt the engine would ever do.  I think it's more of an emergency air intake if the other one fails, or to let warm air in cold conditions.
I wouldn't want to remove the trap door since you will be letting hot air from the engine bay into the airbox.

In addition to adding a K&N filter, I removed the airbox pre-filter (the fine fabric screen) and also I cut a 3" hole at the bottom corner of the airbox which I ran a 3" fine corregated flexible hose to the lower valance opening (next to the foglight).  That provides lots of cool exterior air in a more efficient direct path that flows straight to the face of the air filter -- it's also less than half an arm's length in air travel compared to more than an arm's length with a few kinks and turns from the top of the grill to the far edge of the airbox of the stock intake.
I notice there is more grunt and the engine runs a little more freely with my setup.

Cleaning your K&N periodically is a good idea to maintain optimal airflow.

I always felt like the trap door actually stopped air from going into the engine bay creating pressure from the incoming air and forcing it up through the filter.  If I remember the stock airbox correctly.

I've already done the COAM mod. I haven't removed the screen. I'll probably put the trap door back in and remove the screen and see how it runs.
That little trap door has some very small openings in it already. Jack, if you're insight is correct and my suspicions are accurate then that's what's causing my car to to get up slowly.

1- Release emergency brake, or as Mitch Hedberg would call it: "the make-the-car-smell-bad handle."

j/k. I have nothing constructive to add to this discussion.

Mmm...couple more mods and I'll be on the dyno to see how slow my car really is. I don't think it'll be done by DATR but we can always hope

ok.  i will stand in the slow line. I am fine with that.

I am glad to hear your car is better today. I may just have needed to adapt, or maybe it was just pissed off at you the other day. Who knows. These things are more finicky than my dog.
