Title: Ice, Ice baby: Georgetown 'Fun Days' 2005-12-30 + 2006-02-24
Post by: hotani on November 17, 2005, 01:42:14 PM
It's that time of year again. I'm planning to at least go to the Dec. 30th day, and will try and make the Feb one as well.

AWD is *required* they won't let you on the ice without it.

Basically the 'Fun Day's are where they open one or two tracks for racing, and there are 2 lines of vehicles. You race 1 lap around the track then get back in line. It is more relaxed and well, fun than race days because you spend more time driving on the ice. If you lose your first race on a race day chances are you won't get to drive anymore.

If anyone is interested, post below and we'll figure out a spot to gather before heading up the mountain Friday.

More info (http://www.iceracing.homestead.com/). Cost for the day is $5.

As long as the chance of any sheet metal damage is kept to a minimum... I'm definitely down for some ice doughnuts!

you race opposite each other*, so no chance of contact. And they get pist if you go off doing donuts - I know coz they yelled at me last year!

* start on opposite sides of the track, going same direction, whoever completes a lap first wins. As long as you're moving there's not much of a chance the other person will ever catch up to you or vice versa.

Hell yeah! The Quantum will kick some arse!

oh a little tip for those that haven't been before: you'll have your windows down a lot - you need to see and talk to others... Just make sure you roll up the windows before racing! I forgot once last year and filled the inside of my car with snow! 8O

Scary part was where it got between my back and the seat... while the seat-warmer was on. It went from warm-->FAWKN HOT in about 2 seconds.

I can't make the December one due to holiday work schedules already being set in stone, but I might be able to swing the February one.  Even if I don't drive, I would love to go up and watch and support those that are driving. Always looks like fun.

Oh - sorry!

Everyone is pretty much on their own out there, but 2 laps around the track and you start to figure it out. I went in last year thinking I could be drift king all day, but it wasn't what I expected. Once you start to lose it on straight ice it's pretty much over till you stop moving (with bare rubber anyway). So by the end of the day I was starting off slow, shifting soon into 2nd, and keeping it there all the way around the track. If there is snow pack then that's a different story - then it's a little easier to drift and stay in control.

Yes, the fun days are both on Fridays since they do the actual racing on the weekend.

Plus if anyone doesn't want to take their car out, or would like to just ride along I'd be happy to oblige.

Friday. As in, THIS Friday.

Who's with me? We meeting up somewhere or shall we just see you on the lake?

Once again, I'd be glad to drive a 2WD person up in my car... you can even drive a lap or 2. :)

UPDATE:

Looks like snow tomorrow, so there might be some on the lake if it doesn't all blow off.

I'm going out Thursday to get some of these (http://yaktrax.com/). If there is no snowpack, walking out there is near impossible without them. But when the wind is blowing you can run and slide reeeally far! :D

nice video of the suby! Mine (http://hotani.net/mov/jeep_donuts) are pretty tame (http://hotani.net/mov/charles_donuts) in comparison. :)

Being out on the frozen lake is nothing like the snowy parking lot where you can actually go fast and have some control. Only way to do that on the lake is with these (think I can get a set for the A4? :D):
