Title: Mods for my B6
Post by: 92UrS4 on February 03, 2006, 02:07:44 PM
Well, after thinking long and hard, which always involves $ signs, I decided I am going to attempt to mod the B6 and make it the car I want. I figure that worse case I will still spend less than having to sell the car, get another car, pay taxes and all that crap.

The first items ordered...

European cupholders, euro switch.

Next up....
Front Fog lights
Clear corner markers
Window tint
Springs
Wheels/Tires

Down the road....
Chip

We'll see, I am going to owe on my taxes, and I am hoping for a bonus from work. If the net is enough I will try and do as much as I can in the next up category.

I also plan on having a garage day soon to do the cupholder mod. I will need help. It is very involved.

you are down right crazy....all that work for a cup holder?  Obviously, I would love to help, weekends are the issue.  How long do you expect this to take?

Dude, drive my car for a day and try to manage any sort of beverage. It is worth it. Unless you have like a super big gulp, the drink is all over the place.

Good lord...that's more work than the installation of my YarrowSport rear upper stress bar.  I'd be happy to help

Woo hoo! I figure not a lot of people are going to tackle this one so I want to do it, not just to be differnt, but to have some halfway decent cupholders. Not to mention I like that it closes.

BTW, here is what the one for the B6 looks like:

Jay, those look sweet.  There is something to be said for adjustable cup holders.  The Subie did not have them, the Honda does.  I think it will be a great mod, and the fact that you can close the cover over it, that is just sweet!!!

Yeah, and you get another storage spot. I thinkt eh cupholders on teh US spec was an afterthought. What we have there is a little cuppy that is like fely lined, and a narrow felt lined tray. The cup holder just pops in there and is really worthless.

i know the feeling. i have a cupholder for 1 cup and it sucks. So we don't take drinks in the A4 unless we plan on holding them. I know the feeling, my car and drinks are NOT compatible. The last time i put  starbucks cup in the holder it ended up on the passenger foot well.

Ouch, that sucks. I remember my A6 had just one, so I swapped out my card holder with another owner for his cup holder so I could have two cup holders. That mod was kind of a pain, but wirth it in the enf. Of course those cupholders were worthless unless it was a can of soda.

if in your research you see one for the A4, let me know.

To put  decent set of cup holders in my GTI I would have to replace the whole center console and mod my ebrake handle or get a new one.  It's not really all that difficult, I've taken out the console before, but they really should have put better cup holders in to begin with.

The ones that pop out above the stereo work OK, but anything bigger than a can of pop I feel like it'll come flying into my lap if I use more than 10% of the throttle.

The B5 Passats hd in dash cupholders as well that popped out, not unlike the MKIv's. They were only good for pop cans or things about that size as well. Nothing too tall or it flew right out.

I know we should be driving our cars, not worrying about drinks. However, I love driving, I love road trips, and it;s hard to take a road trip or a days drive and not have something to drink.

Got to love the B5.5 Cup holders :D

I agree that is is a PITA, but a good cup holder is worth it!

when I was looking around at cars... one of my favorite things about the Tacoma was it's Nalgene holder.  Since I take a Nalgene virtually everywhere, this was a very nice feature.

I was suprised the Xterra didn't have this same feature... oh well

THe B6 Passat does have a spot int he door pockets for a litre bottle, I believe nalgenes fit in that category. THat is a big plus for me too.

Let me know when Jay. This is something I am going to do as well. The cupholders that come on the NA spec are kind of like boobs on a goldfish. I'm also down for the foglight install. I think I'm going to order some in March so if you're doing yours around then maybe we can hook up and swear like sailors.

Kind of. They have three canoes, 1 with a 2 hp Merc on it, another has a 4'X8' sheet of plywood attached to it so they can land the R/C airplanes, that's the aircraft carrier.

Well I got the cupholders and new switch yesterday, however, I found out from my wonderful doc today that I am sick as all hell. So hopefully I will be all better in a few weeks and I can give it a shot.

Also, someone was a guinea pig and installed their cupholder already and dia  ncie writeup on the tex. He said it took him about 2.5 hours. So I'm thinking that it will still be a challenge, but not as bad as everyone is making it out to be.

EDIT: Here is the writeup: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=2433554

Well, I'll just wear my bubble boy suit. Problem is I can't play with sharp objects since the suit could be damaged. that and my doc told me not to play with sharp objects too.

In all honest though, just let me know when Jay.
