Title: Garage Day 11/8?
Post by: ColoradoB5 on October 31, 2003, 11:59:44 PM
Anyone want to come over and do a garage day early Saturday?

I would like to head up to Lance's and check his place out before I have to go pick Jen up at the airport in the evening.

We can do caliper painting, tail tinting, brake light modding, and any other projects we can fit in.  Everyone fully suspended now?

Anyone needs adjustments on anything?  I have a VAG-COM now and am open to learn anything anyone knows...

That weekend is all tied up for me.  I would love to do the rear fog mod, brake caliper paint (gloss black baby!)  and have somebody with the vag-com hook me up to "sport" mode for the tip.  I guess I'll have to wait for another weekend to do all this.  Have Fun!

Well this would probably be a good weekend to do winter wheels too, or the following at the latest.  I'd also like to retint my tails since all the tint came off ;).

Let me know what you think about wrapping the wheel thing into this Garage Day otherwise we could shoot for the following weekend.  I just know usually when we have something one weekend most have to make up for it the next with their significant others ;).

I'm down for a garage day. I'm not sure if I'll wait to put my winter tires on then or do it this weekend. :?

Hey Jay, we could make the garage the wheel rotate bay.  That takes about 10 minutes a car, especially with two people working on it.  Tint all around for anyone that wants it.

For those with the B5.5, I can do front blinkers since yours are different and are not right next to the headlights.  Once coat would totally change the appearance but make it just as bright as stock..

Sweet! Lets do that! I know I need help, I am still too weak and under spleen restrictions on force and weight so that would rock!

If that's cool with you W then i'll update the message on the homepage with a link here.

Thanks!

I am there for the tail lights and winter tires.  Can someone post a be-all end-all grocery list of everything needed for the tail/fog light mods.

We'll miss ya Jon.  At least we get to see you sometimes though.  Big change from last year.

Jay knows the part numbers for the headlight switch hook up.  Jay, do you remember that part number?

Also, you will need two 1156 bulbs, several connectors as well.  I'll be buying some of this stuff to have in stock, but we may want to see if we can use Andrew's wire again.

Remember, you do need the euroswitch to be able to use the rear fog, but the other mods don't require it.

Also, the tail tinting uses a lot of that spray.  I'll buy a can for everyone that wants to do this, but you have to give me some cash for that and let me know who you are (I got you Dave and Jay).

I think I'm going to try and wire up my fogs (dual), although I have them as brake lights now. Winston, what kind of diode do I have to get? Also, I may have enough extra wire for those wanting to do the brake light mod.  :) I definitely have to put my stocks back on too. It was slippery at times this weekend. 8O

I wish I could make it. Haven't done anything with you guys in a long time, but just like Jon, I have to work.

But I will try and do the extra brake light mod in honor of the GTG. It'll be jst like I'm there only Jay will get to drink more beer!      Oh, wait, that's right. I forgot.

Hey Jay, I did a story the other day and while I was doing it I thought of you. It was a story on how to brew your own Beer! Neat stuff and of course I got to sample some of the stuff, if you know what I mean.

After thinking about it, Doing that for next years big summer GTG we should all gather and chip in to make a batch of brew. 15 gallons worth! It looks like a whole lot of fun and you get to choose your own type and style of beer. Good stuff. You don't even have to do it at someone's house, there are places that you can brew on site. You do the cooking and pitching of the yeast and they store it while it ferments and then you go back and bottle it. And whamo, 14 to 16 gallons of beer in 22oz bottles!  8O

Just an idea for another time maybe...

http://www.users.qwest.net/~bkain/images/Technical-Fog_Brake_Light_Conversion.jpgWow Chas, that sounds like a great idea.  I'd be up for that even before next year.

Mark, here's Boris' diagram with part numbers.

I only needed the one bridging across, not the one down.  This was probably due to the way I wired my rear fog.  Plan on 1 diode for each rear fog you do.

I just got a big oil extractor delivered today.  I'm gonna try it out tomorrow night probably, but I can bring it on Saturday if anyone needs to change their oil.  Just bring a large jug to take home your old oil and you can use this thing so you don't have to get under your car.

Winston, apparently, there was a group buy on this extractor thru clubb5 a while back.  The GB is technically closed, but you can still get a good deal on this extractor.  The one I got was $48.95 shipped.  Here's the link to the GB thread: http://www.clubb5.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=53411&highlight=oil+extractor and here's the link I used to actually purchase the extractor: http://toolparadise.com/company/B5/.  If you buy thru that site, pick the 2 day air shipping option, it won't cost any more than the ground shipping option.

Hey, I would love to learn how to change my own oil. What should I get? Is is better to go to a synthetic and something for the colder months? TIA!

I have only used Mobil1 5w30 in my car since the first oil change.  Your engine will run better, smoother, longer and will also balance your checkbook.

You can search on clubb5 and find more opinions about which oil and filter to use than you can ever imagine.  I prefer to use a synthetic.  I use Valvoline Synpower 5w40 (or 5w30 if that's all I can find).  Other folks are happy with Mobil 1.  I also use a K&N oil filter.  You can pick up a replacement oil drain plug at the dealer for a few bucks (unless you use an extractor in which case you don't need to remove the drain plug).

Ok..now for the dumb questions...

How many quarts of oil should I get and can I get a good oil filter at one of the local Checkers, Pep Boys or Auto Zones? If not maybe I'll order a filter today to hopefully have it by Sat. Is that all I'll need for the oil change? Thanks!

Mark, it should be just over 4 quarts with the filter.  This page should show it, but I can't view it from work due to our internet nazis:

My car takes a little under 4 quarts.  Here's a page on clubb5 with more info: http://www.clubb5.com/information/oilchange.shtml.  I can usually find a K&N filter (the HP2005 for the 1.8T) at Checker or Pep Boys.  They always have the better quality kind by Fram too, for example.

Cool - thanks Win! I'll pick up 4 quarts of Mobil1 5W30. Would you want to split another quart with me to get that extra .2qts? Also, where should I get a new oil filter? Thanks.

Mark, I have some extra Mobil 1 (5w30 & 10w40) if you want to top it off with that.  Alan just posted above what filters and where to get them.  I have always been happy with the K&N.

Thanks for that CB5 link, Alan - very helpful. My 99 takes 3.7 qts, so I guess no need to split an extra quart with ya Win. :) Thanks anyway!

That's without the filter.  Check your user manual and it will show just over 4 quarts (4.2 to be exact) for the oil with filter.

Today I bought 4 quick connects for the rear fog mod.  If you don't have this, and you have a B5 (or B5.5) Passat, you really need to get one.

I bought them out at McDonald VW, and 4 will only do two cars (correct me if I'm wrong Jay), so let me know who needs them.

JR, I'll be up and ready at 9.  I don't know what I'm doing Friday yet, but I'm leaving myself some time to recover.

I've got tons of crap to do on Saturday.

Last night I smacked a curb that I didn't see hard enough to cause some funny noise when I turn at speed. So the first thing I'd like to do is get it up and check all my steering/suspension garbage. (I created more dash rattle too  )

Then I want to tint and mod the rear lights, then put in some fogs and dremel out a switch hole in the little dash things around the hazard light area.

Then, I should be done.

I'll be there right around 9. (I may stop for donuts too...Lamar's. Although it's a little out of the way.) You like yes?

I may have some left over Fog/Brake Light Mod materials I can bring.  Also, I am waiting to hear about when I can pick the ol Scout up, and since that is about a 5 hour round trip it may affect my Garage Dayness.

As for the previously mentioned CR GTG Sat evening, I may still try and make it even though I'm a little ticked at the remarks made towards me.  I still like getting together with a big group.  I know the last one I went to was at Barnes and Noble and there were a shitload of cars.

Jay, I wouldn't take that comment too personally; it didn't seem too bad or directed to you specifically.  Depending on when we finish, it may be better to head down there than to Lance's since his ends at 3 or so.  We'll play it by ear.

Randy, what time does the party end?  You can always meet us in CR for the GTG there.  Check with me to see if we do go there first (call me on my cell 720-318-5177).  Here's the post over at VWVortex:

I won't be going to the GTG as I've got to work on Sat. Night. I will be on the chat if anyone's bored.

I'd also be down with a caliper painting day. At $9 a can, I can definately dig. I want silver though...

Anyway, I have to be back at the house by 11:30, so I hope I can get everything done by then  8O

Question about the VW "connect wires".  I found a pic of the part number and noticed that they are the same wire/plug that I picked up when I rewired my MAF plug.  When you say "2 wires", are you talking about two wires with the plug at the end of one side or two wires with the plug on both sides?  From the look from the diagram that Winston has, it looks like the wires need the connector only on one side.  If so, then I may have the wires already.

Good question, but I may not have a good answer for you.  If you are talking about the 000-979-126 part, then the parts guy told me that they come as one wire with a quick connect on each end, but that the VW parts guys cut them to sell individually and the Audi Parts guys leave them as is.

If that's not the part you are talking about, let me know.

You know, it just came to me.  The MAF kit had only three wires with the connectors on both ends.  The VW guy said to cut them in half to get the number of wires with the connectors on one side.  I think I may have one wire that I did not use.

Winston - When I put the rear fog on my variant they sold me one wire (I believe it's the part# you listed) and I just cut it in half to make connections for both ends.  I think it cost 2.12 at the dealer. I might be off by a few pennies but not many.

However, I do have the wiring and connectors for one more brake light mod if anyone wants it.  I will bring it with me.

I've been trying to go at least one GTG, and every time I think it's gonna happen, I get sidetracked. It's kinda hard though because I work weekends, and I had surgery yesterday on my shoulder. Maybe in a couple of weeks there will be something else going on that I can't ditch out of. I can't say when the next Pit Party will be, at least where I'll be at it.  I don't last very long right now and if I had a party I would be asleep by 9 or 10 instead of 4 or 5 am ;).

I am trying to buy a house here soon, so maybe the next party I have will be there, if not, once I'm better there will for sure be a Jay is Better Time to get F'd up Party.

Winston, How long are you guys planning on doing this tomorrow? I have a few things to do in the morning and the wife has given permission to bug out in the afternoon. I was hoping to be there earlier, but that isn't going to work out. No worries though. If you get a moment, give me a call on my Cell phone and let me know what's up. 303-668-4826

Thanks!

I just wanted to give a BIG thanks to everyone that helped me out.  Having no choice but to be a total wuss these days is really hard on me and you guys stepping up was awesome.

I love my Tinted Tails (thanks Dub!!!), the Vaccum hoses are working great! (thanks Dub, Mark, Dave and Mike).  My wheels roll, more special thanks to Pat, Mark, Dub and everyone!

Thanks again guys!  Pat, I owe ya for the Philly, so next time I see ya make sure I give you the money.

Jay, it was great to see you!  It was no problem assisting with your car.  I am glad that you got the work done that you needed.

I also want to thank Dub for the hospitality and the tinted tails!     They totaly put a different look to the back end which needed something other than just the "Passat" lettering removed.

I also want to thank Mark. Milke and Andrew for helping with the fog light wire-up.  I can't wait to get the Euro switch in.

It was really cool to meet some new faces and see some new rides.  For those who were not able to show up Saturday,  we will catch you next time!

Hey everyone, thanks for a great garage day.  We are a well oiled machine at garage days...

I wake up, take a shower, everyone shows up and starts cranking away with the air tools.  You guys are pro's now.

The pics are up in the gallery, so check em out.  I even got a shot of London's new BBS wheels on his 20th AE GTI...nice!

Dave's tail:

Matt and Chas, sorry I missed your posts Friday.  I must have left work already and didn't check them out that night.  We were working until about 4pm or so.

It was good to get everyone ship shape before the cold weather hits and hopefully the rear fogs will get some use soon.

So all in all, we did three sets of tails, Jay's vaccum hoses and wheels, we checked JR's suspension after a nasty encounter with something on the road, we tried to change out Hawks control arms, but the same problem with bolts kept us from getting his control arms in.  Alan, Mark and I all used Alan's new oil extractor, which worked great.  Mark, Andrew and Dave all got the rear fog put in and Mark and Dave did the extra brake lights too.

All in all, it was a great day.  There was no way we were doing calipers, so we'll save that for another time...

Well I finally made it to a GTG :!:

Dub - Thanks for hospitality and the "gift"     I am sorry I was not able to roll up the shirt and dive in, but Espen is a little too wild and I did not want him to destroy your house.

It was get to seet the rest (orsome of the rest) of the die-hards.  Nest time I will try to find alternate arrangements if I have Espen so I can participate fully.

Hope to see you all soon. 8)

Yo! Thanks Dub for the great Garage Day! The tails are awesome, sorry I had to bust out so quick on you guys, but as you know (or didn't) my wife had a medical condition kick in when she got lost, not good. I found out when I got home. Anyway, she loved the brake light mods, and the tinted tails!
Thanks!
It was great meeting Kraut and seeing all the guys again.

You bet guys!  It was good meeting you Randy.  JR, tell Tisha (if you can) that we all hope she is feeling better.

Oh I forgot to post this, but it is inevitable that I end up with more stuff than I started with.  I have Hawk's sweatshirt, Alan's watch and Dave, I think you left your Dremel.

So for the next GTG, I will be warm, on time and ready to Dremel.

Thanks Jay.  I'll check for it and stick it in my trunk for our next GTG, whenever that may be.

Much thanks to Winston for hosting. You are one of the few who have a perfect house for these kinds of GTG's - hopefully I will soon have one too (house, that is). I had a lot of fun and learned a few things in the process! I really like the dual fogs I wired up and got so excited I wired up the extra led in the euroswitch last night! :P

Thanks to all my peeps - Alan for the extractor, Pat for the Philly (I owe you $3) Winston for the hospitality and wire connectors, JR for the donuts and everyone else for showing up. The more people, the more fun!
 :)

No way!  Well you can repay me by helping me do this too!  If we can do that and wire up the dash display for this, I'll be one happy camper...

Yeah Dub, I realized when I got home that I left the Dremel and the bit set.  I will have to stop by sometime to pick it up.  Maybe I can lay a copy of Americas Army on ya if you want it.

I agree. The extra led in the euroswitch is cool, but the dash display is uber cool.

P.S. - Forgot to ask, but did anyone do the sock mod? I wanted to check that out.

Maybe weekend after next (22nd or 23rd) we can have a wiring garge day. I want to wire the indicator in the dash too so we can all do that and solder in the led on the euroswitch. Also, I have some extra led's available if anyone wants. :)

I'm up for that.  I know how to solder, but don't have the tools...

Well, it looks like I wired something wrong on the euroswitch. I noticed tonight that when I press the brake pedal the rear fog icon on the euroswitch lights up. So, I de-soldered the led and think I'll just leave it as it is. I think I'd rather have the fog icon in the dash anyway- it's easier to see too. Oh well. :?

Sounds like you need another diode somewhere.  Maybe on the wire from the euroswitch to the rear light assembly.  Put a diode on that wire in the correct orientation (test each way before crimping) and that might take care of that problem.  And if you already have a diode on that wire, well, I don't know what to tell ya.  :?

That's probably what it is! The only place I don't have a diode is on the wire to the euroswitch. Thanks Alan! Oh...anyone have an extra diode they willing to part with? :)
