Title: Audio opinions
Post by: 03Indigo on June 17, 2006, 10:13:16 PM
I am not looking for anything special, but the dealer made one small screw up with my car, and they have offered to do an upgrade of my stereo at no cost...but I  have to pay for the install as they will not do aftermarket installs.  Their OEM double din audio units are bunk, so I wanted aftermarket.

I have been doing some research and wanted opinions on this unit.  I am not looking to have a massive stereo, just basic good sound with multiple functions.

I am looking at the Kenwood DPX-501.

It has:
--USP port
--Aux port
--iPod direct connect
--MP3/WMA playback
--SIRIUS satellite radio ready
--RDS

I like it because it would come with a direct connect wire harness, the direct connect iPod adaptor offered by Kenwood so my songs would be displayed on the unit.  I also like the RDS so I know what songs are on the radio in case I hear something I want to add to my collection, I will know who the artist is and what song.  Had that in the Allroad, have it in the MINI, really want it again.

so, any opinions on this unit?  I wanted to upgrade maybe next summer, but they are offering to get it for me, so might as well, and this seems to have the most options for the pricing they are allowing.

bump for the audio since today was post central and spring cleaning on the forums ;)

I decided on this unit this afternoon, the dealer said they will order it for me today, along with the iPod direct connect so the unit can control the iPod and it will show song and artist info on the screen, as well as charge my iPod.  It should also come with a wiring harness so I don't need to splice any wires.

Now I just need to figure out install and where to put the iPod.

I've always liked Kenwood products.  Having a front USB port is way cool.

The Passat has had a Kenwood unit in ti for about 4 years and I have not regretted getting it.

Question though. Would the Kenwood accept the iPconnection via the iPod/USB cable?  Just wondering.  I would understand the hard wire way to go though.

The unit has 3 ways to connect the iPod...there is a AUX earphone jack input in the back, so you can connect that when you install it, run the cable to anywhere, and plug that into an ear phone jack and it will play through the stereo.  In the back, there is the direct connect iPod cable from the back of the unit as well.  This connects directly to the iPod but allows the info to be displayed on the unit and the iPod to be controlled by the unit.  Then the USB, i have not found any info that will confirm or deny if it will allow music or data from the iPod.  I have read that it works with "dump devices"  what ever those are.  I think those are the little USB data storage things that you can connect directly to a port and use as a portable storage device.  But I am not computer saavy....so I am just guessing here.

just put in the double din head unit this morning....and so far, so good.  I have all hook ups wired and accessed through the glove compartment.  USB is in the front, AUX input in the glove box, as well as the iPod direct connect through the clove box.  So far, so good.  Makes the OEM speakers sound so much better.

Now I just need to read through the book that is the user manual to figure out how it all works.

haha, my trade in rate is directly equal to your new turbo rate....although, I think your changes are more expensive than mine ;)

hehe....probably true.  All I can really say to that is that I would hope mine is faster at this point :D

it BETTER be faster after all the trouble you have had to deal with.

Mine is just a commuter to save money for house mods and vacations.  Even though it is less expensive than the Honda, I actually like it a whole lot more.

I have installed the fogs, head unit, splash guards 4300K Xenon lamps, WRX gauge cluster trim, 20% Tint, got the all season heavy duty rubber mats, and this week, I will be putting on the painted matching rear wing for the top of the hatch as well as painted mirror skins to replace the plain black ones that are there now.

No, it is not all that much, but it is fun to drive, and I actually really like the way it looks, and LOVE the color.
