Title: Altitude and chips

Ive heard that the Giac chips dont work so well at our altitude. Any of you guyss have recomendations of what chips perform well at our altitude for a 2000 S4? Autosport Werks recomended the Dahlback racing chip but i want to explore all of my options here.

Well most shops are going to recommend what they are authorized to sell. Don't get me wrong, though, the shops selling these upgrades believe in them and believe the are the best solution for your application.

Randy should chime in shortly as well as some other folks experienced with chipping the twin turbo. While not all programs are created equal, in my esperience with chipping a 1.8T they come pretty close.

from what I have read GIAC is actually the best at altitude and on 91 octane.  

So, in turn that is what I bought.  of course it didn't hurt that that is what Randy is carrying.  Randy and Jeff moss have also been working on customizing the GIAC chip to run even better at altitude.

When it comes to chips, find a shop that you know and trust and go with what they peddle.  It is best to trust in the local support you are going to get rather than in a software company thousands of miles away.

with a 2000 S4 the GIAC is actually a better altitude chip than the APR. Jeff Moss has spent alot of time perfecting that chip for GIAC for use at our altitude. Call Randy at Autobahn, he can fill in the rest of the story.

Never been chipped at altitude, actually that never even occured to me. When it comes time (soon I hope) to chip the B7, it'll be GIAC, cuz I know where Randy is and I trust him to take care if the car :)

I really trust Randy and there for recommend him.  APR or GIAC are really the same.  APR has some nice features, and GIAC has nice features, performance is the same.  I got tired of how APR handles you when you have problems and therefore are now a GIAC fan.  I still like APR, but if I got another car, I would use GIAC in it.


I used to do business with Autosport Werks, but in a 2 year period they have changed who they carry 3 times.  APR was first until APR dropped them, then it was Sportec and now Dahlback.

IMO it's between MTM and GIAC.  GIAC should be faster overall, but MTM has better low-end torque for around town driving.  To the best of my knowledge, MTM is the only chip maker that tunes its software specifically at altitude.  However, like others have said, Randy and Jeff have been working to improve how the GIAC software works up here.  If I were in your shoes I'd probably go GIAC, but MTM would also be a great option.

So what would a giac chip cost me? i got my last pay check comeing in here soon since school just started, so im looking to make my car a bit faster.  :D

Most chips worth buying are around $450, give or take $50.  The MTM is more expensive at $550.

That was the day the alternator and battery were dead. The car had all sorts of problems including the wrong MAF in it. It feels MUCH faster now.

First you start with a chip....then turbos.....then fueling....then all the other stuff= $20,000 8O

cole is right.  once that mod bug bites, watch out.

turbos, fueling, intercoolers, downpipes, exhaust, brakes, suspension, short shifter, DTS, wheels, performance tires, cf trim, track days, track rubber, sway bars, roll cages, racing harness, camera mount, 5.50/gallon race fuel, the desire not to ruin this car, then you'll need a dedicated track car and mods to it...

it is a sickness really.  the chip is just the start...

GIAC for the S4 is $595.00

All the above is true from a point of view.  All good things come with more good things. :wink:

Hey, for what it's worth i live at 10100 feet, 400 feet above the town i work in and my Giac Chipped 02 Allroad runs great...not sure if the mileage per gallon has gone up....i have a small lead foot..but throttle response and smile factor has multiplied ten fold........plus the WRX owners in my town are getting a little unhappy......station wagon with a child seat beating them off the line....(child not in seat when i do this i hasten to add)

For my money it's the quickest (pardon the pun) mod you can do for instant results....

I have had no less than a great experience with the GIAC product for a4.  its the damn mod bug...."ill just do chip and DV" has no more meaning to me....kind of like when i first got chipped and said "ill run it in stock mode most of the time"....lololol!
