Title: Trail Clean Up Truck Project w/pics
Post by: Cole on November 06, 2006, 05:51:55 PM
I wanted to build a project with a purpose. Something that might benefit the 4x4 community. So this last spring I bought an old Chevy truck with the plans of making it into a dedicated "Clean Up" truck.  (I never have enough room in my Jeep to haul much trash). While I want the truck to be good for hauling trash, I also want it to send a message that we are not just out there tearing up trails. I want people to know that people and companies care enough about the sport to build trucks specifically to clean up and maintain our trails.

I have a whole plan for the trucks build up and then how I am going to show it to get the message out. I am still open to ideas and still have a lot to do.

I have been a bit slow building the project. Mainly becasue it is only me working on it.

Here are a couple of pictures. It is still very rough:rolleyes: and needs lots of work. Just thought I would share.

Sorry for the picture size.

This is a long way from being complete.

I would like to thank the following companies for caring enough about the message and helping me out with this to this point. (Holley,Weiand, Flowtech, Allied Racing, Superlift, KC Highlights, Bushwhacker, Tuffy, Hobart)

The truck is a 1974 Chevy 3/4 ton longbed "Camper Special" has a 454 with a valve rattle(motor needs some love), TH350 that I want to convert to a 700R4. I have no idea on the t-case 203 or 205.  14bff rear/D44 front.

I think thats a great idea...a few of the guys i work with go 4 wheelin where we live and always end up picking up random piles of beer cans and bags of trash........nice to know there are still people out there who know how to have fun today...while thinking about tommorrow.

Yes! I should point out that Andrew (Coveredbytheblood) gave me the 2003 GTI seats that you see in one of the pictures.

I am not done with the fab work on the seats yet. Still need to finish the center section and final welds. They took lots of hacking and welding but they fit pretty nice.

Cole, I think that is a great idea and something the offroad community needs.  I know it has given me a new respect as I am one of those that have felt that offroaders do chew up trails and don't seem to care.  The public, including me, do need education that offroaders do care about the trails they use.

Thanks for posting that up....looks like a fun project.

What do you guys think about organizing an RMCB5 trail clean up day in the spring?

Since the scout looks like a pile of garbage it would be good for haling garbage out. Though it is known to shed some of it;s own pieces on the trails never to be found again, so hopefully I take out more than I leave.

I'd be ready to go anytime!

Just need to figure out which wires are the heated seat wires? :D  Would hate to add 12volts to the air bag wires by accident. 8O

I spent a little more time last week putting metal together with fire. These are the 2003 GTI seats. Sorry for the bad camera phone pic.

The center section is not complete, but you get the idea. Now I just need to wire up the heated seat function :D

Guess it is about time for a quick update.  Our plans were to have this thing together WEEKS ago. But for some reason we have slowed down.

I need to wire it, paint it and assemble it. Scott still needs to finish up the body work. (I have been welding and grinding on the body.........You should NEVER let me near your truck with a welder:D )

Here are some updated pictures. New floors, new drivers rocker, bedside patch (..cause a full replacement bedside was WAY over priced)  RAAMat sound deadening.

Spent the day playing with the welder.

We put a bed patch in where the 5th wheel had been. Patched up the last of the rockers. Just need one spot on the back of a rocker and a small section of the passenger floorboard and it will be 99.9% rust free and all steel again.

Also completed a bit more of the wiring harness. Getting closer to a running truck that we can paint.

My computer was stuck doing some updates and I was near the truck with a camera.

I have been trying to get motivated to do some more work on it. So going out and snapping some pictures may help.

These should give you an idea what I still have to do....a small idea.

I want to swap out to the 91 style grill. I have a radiator support, just need the headlights and grill pieces. Also need to build a winch mount for the front, bumper etc for the Ramsey 15K winch with Winchline.com rope on it. Also have 4 KC highlights that need to go up front.

I need some rocker protection with a step, needs to be easy to step up and toss stuff over the bedside right in front of the tire.

Also need a rear bumper. Need to build a rack in the bed to hold shovels, rakes, buckets, 2 more KC lights and a BullDog 10k winch with Winchline.com rope.....and cut out the fenders for the Bushwhacker flares to make room for those 37s.

Roof needs some love. Really need to finish up the body work (which I suck at) and get some paint on it.

....and of course my big hurdle at the moment is that the front axle is broken. It NEEDS something bigger than the D44.
