Awesome Ian! I am so very happy for you! You'll miss the efficiency of the volvo, but thecool factor and driving something you enjoy is a big plus!

I only wish my Scout was that nice.

Very cool.  A guy I knew had one with a SBC swap, and he got stuck (high centered) showing off at a party where a friend was hosting a motorcycle group party.  Mountain home.  No LSD, I guess.  We unstuck it with something like a Civic but not after lots of embarrassing pics, including one with a Ducati 900SS attempting to pull him off the berm.

So I guess my advice is to either get LSD, avoid showing off like that, or bring a 900SS for such emergencies.

Well, first on the list (don't let Megan see this - she gets pissed enough about the car) is tires, which it needs desperately.  Then a lift (2.5" or so, something mild), front disc brake conversion, and a winch.  We'll see where it goes from there.  This will be a daily driver for my, so it will be kept _mild_, plus I have to share the car's modding budget with this, so...

No, we have to push off until tomorrow when I can get the trailer up there and tow it straight to Performance Wheel and Tire for some new rubber.  Going with Mickey Baja Claws.
Title: Re: She's coming home with me Monday!!!
Post by: Cole on February 13, 2007, 09:57:20 AM
Baja Claws are fine for rocks but I would not put them on a daily driver.

If you want a good all around tire that works VERY well on the street I would put on Goodyear MTRs. Quiet, sticky, good on and off road behavior.  I have tested several sets of tires for the magazine. If I had to spend my own money on tires this would be the choice.

FWIW that is what is currently on the Jeep and the truck.

Well that's a bummer - I've already paid for them, and they've already been delivered.  I'll see what I can work out.

It's heeeerrrreeee!!!!!!

Gawd does it need a tune-up, radio, and the replacement of a u-joint.  All I heard on the way home was back-fires and thrumming.  One other issue, and I'm not quite sure what to think, is that when I got home the driver's side front wheel was a little warm where the others were ice cold.  I don't think it's a sticking brake shoe, as it didn't pull on the way home.  Any thoughts?  Cole?

But it was an awesome ride home - despite not figuring out how to turn on the heat until about 1 mile from home

Oh, that's a great thought Jay!!  It does sound like that.  Guess it's time to tear into the front end!!
Title: Re: She's coming home with me Monday!!!
Post by: 92UrS4 on February 14, 2007, 09:13:18 AM
I know with my Scout the quick test is to drive around for a bit then check the hubs by holding my hand over it and if it is really warm compared to the others it is usually a sign. :)

I made such a mess when I did my front bearings a few years ago. I think I used like 20 pair of latex gloves and I swear way more grease than I needed to.

Does it have the old style birfields on it? I would bet it is low on lube and heating those up.

Yah, I didn't think about the birfields either - damn it's been too long.  I'll have check that too.

Congratulations Ian.  Welcome to the rare VW/FJ crowd.

I would sign up right away on www.ih8mud.com, which is 100% Land Cruiser forums.

That site will help suck the money out of your wallet even faster than you planned.

Good luck with the new rig.  With any luck, we may be able to get offroading this spring together.

Awesome!  I'm working on finding some disc brake axles now. I'd also like to find a TBI/TPI setup for the engine.  Then it's just some nitpicky things to fix: weather stripping, taillight lenses, heaters.

I have a D44 Passenger drop fornt  and a 14BFF Rear I would sell you.  :D

Of course that would make it a full width ride for serious crawling. You will NEVER break the 14Bff.

Both have 4:10 and the 14BFF is locked.  The front 44 is disc and the rear is easy to convert to disk. This is 3/4 ton stuff. Would be super strong and VERY stable on the street. Comes complete with 74 Chevy truck frame and body.  8O

You know that thing would be fun with full width HD stuff under it   They make disc conversions for the 14bff cheap. Thing would stop on a dime even with 40" tires on it.

You know you want a 1 ton Toyota

You could get as throttle happy as you ever want to Jay and NEVER break that 14bolt in the X.

Of course you would have to step up to manly tires to not drag it. They can be a bit of a plow under a short rig.

Trying to lift my front end to accomodate anything over 33" would be hellish Frankly, I couldn't justify the expense. It is funny that at $600, the whole setup is cheaper than just an air locker 8O
Title: Re: She's coming home with me Monday!!!

Not only is it cheaper than an air locker, it is cheaper than just 1 tire/wheel combo on the truck 8O

Those axles sound sweet....Full width is nice but shortened is better...still looks kinda stock!
My friend has a pair of toyota pickup axles for sale...front is disc, rear is drum......if you don't want to go the big axle / new wheel direction.

Let me know and i'll see what he want's for them......

Yes! Please!!  I've got a couple of leads through craigslist, but people are being unresponsive.  Would he have calipers to go with the fronts?

Ok, heres the scoop...

Both axles are from an 83 toyota pickup...

Front Axle: complete axle with rotors, calipers, pads, hubs, steering linkage, steering stabilizer and flex lines on the calipers.

Rear Axle: complete axle with 10 inch drums, brake lines and flex line.

Both axles were unbolted and dropped complete from his old truck.......now the bad news...

I don't know the width, did'nt have a tape handy..
I don't know what gears are installed either...
I think all FJ's have the same 6 bolt pattern as pickup's..

i honestly don't know what they are worth.....
He's thinking $400 for the pair...they are not advertised anywhere so you are the only one who knows they are for sale..

Let me know what you think....feel free to do some research, he dosent need a quick answer.....
Title: Re: She's coming home with me Monday!!!
Post by: ianacole on February 27, 2007, 07:47:44 PM
The bolt patterns are the same, but I'm not sure if the axle will bolt directly up.  '83 pickup, I'm suspecting 4.10s, but could be in the 3.92 range.  I'll do a little bit of research to see if they'll bolt straight up, or what it will take to make them work.  The $400 tag is a fair price.  I'll get back to you shortly ... of to sign up on IH8MUD...

Arn't the toy truck axles much smaller and lighter duty than the old land cruiser axles? You might get brakes but be taking a step down in stregnth?!

How wide are the Cruiser axles?

You might be able to find some D44s from a mid 80s wagoneer cheap that may be the right width and bolt pattern.

Also some of the 80s Chevy trucks had 6 bolts.

Post by: ianacole on February 27, 2007, 08:22:41 PM
I don't remember what the 80-83 axles looked like from the Hilux pickups, but you may be right.
Title: Re: She's coming home with me Monday!!!
Post by: English on February 28, 2007, 11:01:31 AM
I don't know much about the axles, have'nt needed to do to much research in that area as of yet.
I'm sure Cole is right, the pickup axles are supposed to the weakest, in relative terms, then a Dana 44, then land cruiser. The D44 and Land Cruiser axles both have there weak links....i'm sure the Dana is cheaper to repair / upgrade as well.

I'm not trying to take a sale away from Cole, just give you some other options......one final thing i have noticed about 4 wheeling.......you never replace a broken part with the same or a "weaker" one........just something else to think about for when those 33's wear out and 38's are on sale.......
Title: Re: She's coming home with me Monday!!!
Post by: Cole on February 28, 2007, 11:30:38 AM
English,

I was really not trying to make a sale. I just happen to have the full width truck axles. Probably not the direction he wants to go with the rig anyway. (but with the right offset wheels it would really not be that wide). I figured out once that with full width axles under my TJ and the right wheels I could be the same width I am now.

Does anyone know the width of Cruiser axles? "Wheel Mount Surface" to "Wheel Mount Surface"?  What is the pumpkin offset front and rear?

Ok...i did'nt want to step on anyones toes....especially as they know more about the subject in question than i do......i could get the numbers later for you if you want....both the Land cruiser and pickup axles...
