Title: I am going to lose 80 lbs in one week
Post by: 03Indigo on March 21, 2007, 09:28:02 AM
for the MINI that is :).  Just ordered new wheels and tires, dropping over 20lbs per corner from the OEM rims and Prada spec 2 tires to the new set up.

My new rims will weigh 16.3 lbs per wheel for a 17" x 7.5" rim, and the 215-45-17 tire will be 18lbs per tire.

Old set up weighs about 31 lbs per wheel for a 17" x 7" rim, and the tires at 215-40-17 are about 22lbs.

New total is 34.3 lbs and the old is 54 lbs per corner.  I weighed one just to get the estimated weight of the wheel since I got the weight of the old tire from tirerack.com.  That is nearly 20 lbs per corner for a total of 80 lbs.

I think that is going to make quite a difference in performance and handling, and mileage as well....while at the same time decreasing road noise, increasing ride comfort, and only slightly decreasing performance.

Can't wait to get them. :)

Nice!!  Since that is all unsprung weight, multiply by a factor of 10 to get a weight savings equivelant.  80x10=800lb savings.  Yeah, you should notice a HUGE difference in all aspects.  Probably won't even feel like the same car.  ;)

Thanks for the info Rick....I had no idea the unsprung made such a difference...I knew it made some, but that much is amazing.  Can't wait to get them on.  It will be a bit before they get mounted on the car, I still have to do my camber plates and adjustable rear control arms and get the alignment I want, then the new shoes will go on....so within a month, I hope to feel a MAJOR difference in the car. :)

No problem.  Now you just need to bring it out to one of the NASA events and run circles around the bigger, more powereful cars.    By the way, what tires did you get?  I've been searching for new summer tires for the GTI.  I'm pretty much zoned in on the Kumho Ecsta SPT, but another opinion never hurts.

Rick,

Does that calculation work the other way too - if I add 20 lbs of unsprung weight, it's effectively adding 200lbs?

Absolutely!!!  Anything not suspended by the suspension (wheels, tire, hubs, studs, even control arms) is unsprung weight and has a direct effect on the cars handling characteristics.  While it's great to strip down a racecar and get it nice and light, you can produce a similar effect by reducing unsprung weight.  Why do you think high end cars (Audi, Porsche) have aluminum control arms?  And yes, while taking weight off makes a big difference, putting weight back on can make a car feel sluggish.

Rick, I was dead set on the SPT, but looking at reviews, and weight, I ended up with the General Exclaim UHP, $17 less per tire, better ratings on www.tirerack.com, and a quieter ride rating, which I wanted for the MINI...that car translates road noise like no other car I have been in.

Comparison between the 2 tires, ratings on a scale of 1-10

General Exclaim UHP, #1 rated tire in the UHP class, 2.2 million miles of customer ratings
Ride Comfort-8.7
Dry Traction-8.8
Wet Traction-8.6
Cornering Stability-8.2
Treadwear-8.6
Weight 18lbs per tire

Kumho Ecsta SPT, #6 rated tire in the UHP class, 1.1 million miles of customer ratings
Ride Comfort-8.3
Dry Traction-8.6
Wet Traction-8.3
Cornering Stability-8.3
Treadwear-8.0
weight 22lbs per tire

edit---this is the rim I am getting, the Kosei R1 Racing, Randy Webb had them on the Mule, tirerack is closing them out, so they have a great price on them right now, no center caps, but I think I can live with that :)

So, now if I am taking this right, when I added my Neuspeed rear swar bar which is around 28 some pounds I am adding on roughly 280 pounds unsprung weight?  Or am I off?

I think that is totally wrong, the sway bar is attached to the frame mostly, right? Or at least it is on the MINI and other cars, the GTI's are funky in the back, so I can't remember.

Roughly speaking, anything that is not supported by the cars supension is unsprung weight (and thus translates to a 10x weight factor).  However, I don't know how swaybars in general are calculated.  Since they are supported by the car's frame (which is sprung weight) but attach to control arms (which is unsprung weight), I don't know how they are factored in.  I'm guessing they are considered sprung weight since on a flat surface they move freely with the suspension and pivot on the frame mounting locations.  Honestly not sure though.

Good wheel choice.  We used those on the SRT4 for two years.  They are a very stout wheel for being so light.  The paint is pretty decent as well.  You'll like them a lot and will look really good on the Mini.  Never heard of those tires.  I'll have to do a little research.  I've been pretty partial to Kumho for the last several years after racing on them.  I've had several sets of the Ecsta MXs and have been very happy with them.  Since I now have a set of track only wheels/tires (stock Lagunas with Hankook Z212s) I don't need as much tire for a summer tire, which is why I was looking at the SPT.

I run the Kosei K1 TS on the GTI - they come in at 15.5lbs for the 17x8 wheels.  For the price, they are tough to beat (plus they fit over my front brakes!!).

PICS?  are they similar to what I am getting?  that is an awesome weight in that wheel size, without running into the $600 per wheel range ;)

Yep, those are them, but I have the gunmetal (2 sets).  $240 a piece from TireRack is tough to beat.

These are what they look like on:

oh yeah, I thought about those for a while, but with the close out on the K1 Racing, I opted for them....and price was less than $170 a wheel :), and since I am not racing, the extra pound was not much of a difference.

Ian, those look GREAT on your car, nice choice.

another thing I just found out, General Tire is made by Continental Tire.....kinda like MINI is made by BMW :)

Pussy.  What, you can't loose 80lbs off yourself in a week???

Very cool.  That is good to loose weight in wheels.  It will make the ride nicer and help performance.  It will esp help with slow speed steering, like autocross stuff.

Not fitted on the car yet, still want to do my adjustable control arms and camber plates and go and get an alignment first, then put the new shoes on...but they just got delivered, and I am very impressed with how light they feel.

I am jealous Jon.  I just took my summer wheels over to Woody's today to get rid of some curb rash.  I can't believe how heavy those things are.  I need to find some lighter rims too.

your car is looking good!

I bet your 18" wheel weighs about as much as my wheel tire combo ;).  34.3lbs for my set up, and your 18x8.5 has got to be around 30lbs, if not more.

Get some 18" SSR for your car, that would help out a bunch :)

2 weeks until I put my Summers on! I wanted to this weekend, but with Vegas on the horizon I need to wait until we get back just in case.

Jon, those look awesome, I can't wait until you get it all wrapped up. All these projects going on is so exciting!

maybe more.  I think wheels + tires are about 55-60 lbs per corner.  I'll toss'em on a scale when they come back from woody's.
