Title: paint inside the headlight housing?
Post by: Richard-EB on June 02, 2007, 12:40:27 AM
I was just curious if anyone has actually completed the mod of painting the housing inside the headlight to match the color of their car?  I have found a few posts on the subject, but have yet to find any photos.  If you have, beyond the compexity of taking apart the headlight itself, how was the project?  Were the results overall worth the time?  Any hints or suggestions for making this project go smoother?

I have not seen it on an Audi that I know of, somewhat ricer, but it is a personal preference.  I have seen it done on a lot of Subarus, and on MINIs now.

Here is a thread from NASIOC that shows how to on a subaru and in the thread, there are a ton of pics of the modification after it is done, different colors, etc.  The process is basically the same, getting the light out is different, but as the basic orientation of the light components are the same, it will give you an idea of what it looks like.

here is a newer MINI light that was done...it is normally all chrome

When I had a GTI, I had OEM HIDs painted.
Here is the first try:

Did a rough color match and it looked good, but not as mean as I wanted.  I tried to do a flat black surround and a color match lip part.  The color didn't quite come right and I also couldn't find any orange bulbs bright enough for the blinkers... and didn't like the white colored blinker.

So here is the black, which Andrew 34k should have

Im not sure if you have checked or not, but maybe try audizine.com. I have read alot of posts about DIY mods but never anything like that but its worth a shot.

many aftermarket headlights has an option of a black or smoked housing instead of chrome, which will save a lot of time and work, but could be very costly if you are replacing xenons.

The body colored housing on the Minis look really cool and tastefully done.  It vaguely reminds me of the old Jaguars and Ferraris which has the clear covers covering the headlight scoops.

i appreciate all the information.  I have thought of purchasing some headlights already done, but i think i will enjoy the satisfaction of knowing that i did them myself more so than just purchasing them.  I will actually just end up purchasing an extra set of stock headlights and modding them, that way if i make a mistake, i can still legally drive.
