Title: Jetta Mods
Post by: JetterBug on June 21, 2007, 02:56:05 PM

I have done absolutely nothing with my car except love it.  ;D Does anyone have some (inexpensive) ideas for ways to make it look sportier and different from every other Jetta I see? I was thinking of a rear spoiler and possibly the tail lights.

It all depends on the look you want.  You can usually find some aftermarket rims for fairly inexpensive, which is a good route.  You could upgrade the front grille, shave (remove) your rear emblems, add a new body kit, and so on.  It is all about what you want your car too look like and how much you want to spend.

Exactly, to be unique, it is going to cast you more than to be like the rest. Like Richard said there are many options. If you are just going for pure aesthetics then things like some euro tails, maybe "joey mod" the headlights, aspherical mirrors, maybe a little lip spoiler, like on the M3s. These things will still cost you some money. The "joey mod" is do it yourself thing if you research it on VWVortex in the MKIV forums I believe. Just the cost of supplies and time.

There are also aftermarket headlight options as well.

Work is a little slow, so I decided to help you out:

I have always found that the fun of driving a car is knowing it is uniquely mine.  You could also look into an exhaust which would give your car a unique sound.  Just an idea.

Alright, next Jetta question. What size rims are good for an upgrade without altering the suspension? We might be keeping it, hehehe.  ;D

You should be able to go to 17" wheels. You could do 18" as well, but you will really have a 4x4 look going. Even with the 17" you will but it wont be as significant.

I would say 17" is the biggest you should go without lowering.

Wonderful, Ill have to look into that. I went onto Discount Tires website, and they have this thing where you can see what certain rims will look like on your car, and I put 22s on it. Hahahaha!!!!! Man that was the funniest thing I have seen/done all day... work is slow today  :(

You can do that on tirerack.com as well. Just for comparisons sake.

I'd 2nd the vote for 17's.  anything larger and the risk of bending it goes way up with a narrow sidewall on the tire.

I run 18's on the allroad, but its tires are so big I still get a 45 series sidewall.  even then I have bent the allroad rims a couple of times.

LOL...that is where you pull the lights apart, and paint the chrome sections black, or some other color.

I have never been gutzy enough to do it, but it does not seem too difficult.

As long as you are careful and patient, key being patient, it isn't bad.

When masking you have to be very careful to not pull the chrome off the reflectors.

for some inexpensive mods, also consider:
- replacing your stock antenna with a short aftermarket one (Honda S2000, VW Sharon, Audi TT, etc.).
- window tint, especially with our hot weather.
- light tinted tail lights.
- clear bumper lights
- badgeless grill (I particularly like the one by Oettinger)

also check out these websites for great stuff:

Remember, you can sign up at parts4vw.com and tell them you are an RMCB5 member. When you do that entitles you to some discounts. They aren't huge discounts and it's not on everything but every little bit helps.
