Title: EMERGENCY HELP NEEDED!!!! VAG-COM in DTC????
Post by: Dizzle on February 07, 2008, 01:38:44 PM
Hey guys, just got off the phone with Randy and he needs to know the diagnostic info for my A4.

At lunch, CEL came on, car idles rough as heck. He thinks its a coil pack, but needs to know the codes (or whatever you can pull).

If anyone in/near the DTC Arapahoe and Syracuse area can help me out I will repay you in your choice of payment.

Please let me know, cell is 720-207-7132 if you can help me out!!!

Thanks!

Here is a link to a bunch of members that might be able to help. Fire off some emails/PMs and see if anyone nearby is available:

Is the CEL flashing? If so don't drive the car.

Yeah, started flashing right about when I got back to work so hopefully no damage was done.

:( Sad, only had the dang car 5 days.

Funny, just sent you a PM Cole.

I have a guy who can help me tonight after 7ish, if no one else can help prior to that will take him up on the offer.

Bigger question will be if its is a coil pack, can this be changed int eh parking lot or do i need to have the car towed to Randy? If so that's ok, the dealer is going to pay for the tow cost.

Just need to know to plan the day out.

It sounds like one or more coil packs have quit, have it towed. Getting the code(s) pulled will give specifics as to it being one or more.

If the dealer is footing the bill without a doubt I would have it towed to Randy. No sense trying to do the work in a parking lot.

coil packs take about 30 seconds to change.  finding the right ones in stock some place is likely going to be the harder part.

My deal is if its something I can swap myself in 30 seconds I would rather not have to worry about getting the car to wherever then getting myself home and then getting myself back to the car the following day.

I have tools a plenty and know my way around a car pretty good so if its as easy as changing a spark plug as Cole said then I would do it tomorrow (or tonight if I could find the right part) and continue on my merry way.

Thinking after this first week of Audi ownership that a VAG_COM is in my very near future...maybe I can get someone to buy me one for my birthday on the 23rd.

I am glad that we were able to meet and that it worked out.  I would suggest that when you can, go ahead and replace the other three coil packs just to be safe.

Is there any place besides the rapetastic dealer to get coil packs from? I would like to pick up the other 3 for the A4 and not really wanting to drop $50 each for them.

Links are appreciated!

I am sure Randy at Autobahn can get them for you.

See what Randy can do for you, if not then try ECS Tuning.  It is the same "R" revision that you picked up from the dealer, but these are $29.83 each: http://www.ecstuning.com/stage/edpd/pagebuild_v2.cgi/?html=learnmore.html&productID=6358 (http://www.ecstuning.com/stage/edpd/pagebuild_v2.cgi/?html=learnmore.html&productID=6358)

As life goes, I had planned on hitting McDonalds today to get the other 3 coil packs...well guess what happened on the way to work...think another one is gone  >:(

If anyone in the DTC has time and can scan for me I would really appreciate it. I will be getting a friend to run me over to McDonalds to pick up the other CPs, but would like to know which one died this time.

Same number as above or PMs will work too.

Thanks!

Sorry you are having to go through this, this is usually the case. What's worse is in the past when folks are under warranty the dealer just replaces one, you leave and tow days later another goes.

Once the new ones are all in you will be good for a long time.

Yeah that is what I am getting from the reading I have done...crazy. I actually had meant to go grab the CPs on Monday, but got caught up at lunch and didnt have time, yesterday was filled with doc appts...*SIGH*

My question is this, both times this has happened has been after filling up the tank. I am going to "good" stations (Shell, Conoco..) so i am assuming that this is not a gas problem. Coincidence?

I suppose you could unplug coil packs until you find one that does not affect how the car is running.  If none of them do, you could look for other problems.

The coils can be had from lots of places for $35-$45 but usually special order.  They might be in stock at the warehouse in Englewood though, so maybe one could be had by this afternoon.  I would suggest buying at least one extra to keep as a spare or replacing all of them and keeping one of the currently working ones in the car.

I rode my bike in today, so I can't do it today, but I work right off Belleview and I-25.  If you can hold out until tomorrow, I can bring mine then?

Email me at wprice@wts.com in case I don't check the site before then.

Good luck,
Dub

It's all good, McDonalds has about 40 in stock and I got wholesale pricing so am good on that. Would just like to know which one failed this time so I can toss that one and keep the other two as emergency back-ups.

WOW,  That one is strange because when we Vag'd it the other day, nothing was showing up as being suspect.  I am sorry that you are having other coil pack issues.  If you do not hear from anyone by 3:30 give me a call and I can swing down.  I have my laptop with me and now I know where I am going.  My cell is 303-944-5417.

Dave that would be awesome. It would just be the scan as I just got back from grabbing 3 more coil packs. Maybe you could also answer a few other questions I have.

Once again Dave is the MAN!!! We swapped out the CPs and car is no longer idling like a diesel.

He was also nice enough to scan the car for all fault codes and will be either posting that up here or sending it to me to post. Would like some thought on a few codes it threw.

But again, thank you Dave for being the great guy you are and helping me out!

I am glad to help.  Yeah, I need to be at the next GTG.  I have not seen a lot of people for a long time.

BTW I created a post that has the VAG read: http://www.rmcb5.com/forums/index.php/topic,6730.0.html (http://www.rmcb5.com/forums/index.php/topic,6730.0.html)

HOLY CRAP!!!! Swapping out the CPs really made a HUGE difference. There is no more hesitation off the line and man does it ever launch now!

Its like a whole new car. I think I may have scared myself on the drive home...really wasnt use to the pick up it has now and stomping the go pedal is a lot different now.

WOOHOO!!!!

Might almost be worth changing the plugs now too. Not sure if they got fouled up at all from the bad CP's.

Knock on wood, I have not had to deal with a bad CP in the past so I don't know what others have done.
