Title: Thinking crazy thoughts about the turbo.
Post by: SweetVW on February 22, 2008, 08:34:53 PM
I have been thinking about the possibility and the effectiveness of running some sort of hose or tube to blow cool air on the turbo.  My guess is if I could somehow route a 2-3" diameter tube from the front bumper or wheel well area, and have it point to the turbo, it could help in keeping it a bit cooler.  This could be of benefit when running the turbo hard.  I was thinking of this for the GTI.

It is just a thought in progress.  I do not know if the return would be worth the effort.  I just want to throw out for some thoughts.

you can also get one of those "electric turbos" and put that inside the hose.  They sell them for NA cars, not that expensive.  Wire up the inline fan, in the middle of the hose, and then even while at rest, you will have cool air blowing on the engine turbo.

I think it would help, but doubt you will see any performance gains outside of longer life of the turbo long term.

Hmm, I had not thought about forced induction.  I agree that performance gains would be negligible.

But, the ability to cool down quicker after a hard run would help.  I could tie the fan to a manual switch

You could move the turbo to the end of your exhaust system.

wonder how a misting system spraying on the turbo would do?

any water system is going to add weight and drain power to drive a pump.   If you wanted to do something I would recommend just doing an air cool system that would blow ambient air onto the turbo.  you could do this with piping from the grill, or put a speed vent on the hood (like a subaru).  I woudl recommend from the grill.
