Title: Need some help - timing belt time
Post by: redline on June 23, 2008, 11:49:01 AM
Well, it's time for the dreaded timing belt job. I have the kit, I have the tools lined up, the only thing left I need is someone to help me the actual job. I will have the instructions with me but I would really like someone to be there who has done the timing belt on a 2.8l before in case something goes wrong. I'll be happy to pay you back in photography or whatever compensation you feel is fair for your time and/or garage if you don't feel like driving out to Elizabeth. Thanks in advance!

lol, welcome to my world Mike! [/crickets chirping] ;)

Even if I knew how to do a timing belt, I'd still probably pay someone else to do it...yea, I'm that lazy-  good luck.

Mike,

I have actually never done one, I witnessed and tried helping some years back when we did like 6 1.8T's in one day.

Depending on when you are planning on doing it I can probably come lend a hand if that will help. Most of the lack of response is that I don't recall any of the 2.8 owners having done the TB themselves.

yup, the V6 is an entirely different beast than the 1.8T which is pretty straight forward.  I have never done a V6.  With the 2 heads and valve trains, keeping the timing on spot is critical, if it were me, I would do what Kingtut suggested, pay someone to do it, for piece of mine, and warranty on their work, etc.  And I am lazy too :)

Yeah, I sold my 2.8 before I had to do the timing belt.  From what I remember, the writeups over on AudiWorld made it look doable.  Mine was a 30V, I think your 12V might be a bit more simple.  I'd be willing to help out if you DIY.  Just never done one myself before.

Do you need the crank lock tool and cam bar for the 12V?

no, Hardey is going to lend me the tools for the job.

hhhmmm... it sounds like a RMCB5 garage day is in order.
