Title: My Triumph Speed Triple.
Post by: Cole on August 12, 2008, 11:47:28 AM
Picked up the frame and misc parts from the powder coater Sunday.

Body work is at the paint shop still.

Time to start putting it back together.

Pictures were taken at 10:00PM in my garage so not the best lighting. (and my stained orange floor does not help the colors)

Frame/subframe and wheels are a champaign gold. Everything else is a textured black.

Motor all freshly painted and ready to go back together. (not the best picture)

I'd be willing to let you ride it for a couple of days if you really want. It is a 1998 T509 885cc Speed Triple. So a bit less power than the new 1050cc Speedy.

It is getting painted Malachite Green Metallic (2008 Porsche color).

Here it is on a Cobra.

Picked up the body work from paint today. Matt's guysat M&M in Aurora, CO did a awesome job.  Paint is actually a 2008 Porsche Color.

There is no way my camera is going to do this paint any justice. But here it is anyway.

(Still waiting on a bearing to be able to assemble the swingarm and the rest of the bike).

Thanks guys. Just waiting on a few parts.

This thing is more difficult to get parts for than the Audi.  ???

With a little help from Scott at Rockstomper I cured my swingarm bearing issue and finally got the speed triple off of the engine hoist tonight.

Still need to do a lot to it, but it was nice to see it on the wheels.

Forgive the mess, there has been an engine hoist in the way for months. It is cleaner now.

Waiting on a bunch of misc parts to arrive to put the rest toghther.

Need to find a coil plug but am having zero luck.

Had time to work on it today.........but it was 66 degrees and sunny here in Colorado so I decided to put off working on the Speedy until another day and took the R1 for a very nice long ride. ;)

I did at least roll it outside and take a camera phone pic. Wish I could have got the sun on the paint, it is sooooo sexy in the sun.

Would like some feedback, suggestions, etc from you guys.

Luimoto (luimoto.com) is working on some custom seats for the Speedy project. They currently do not offer Triumph Speed Triple seats (but probably will after doing mine since they have mine to modle off of)

Here are a couple of renderings. Which option do you like best? (I think the gold color is actually tan, just looks gold in the renderings, you can go to Luimotos site and see some of their other work to get an idea. I have one of their seats on my R1 and love it)

Option 1
(http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3182/3112200548_9ed8e50946.jpg)

Option 2

I like the stripe (option 1) more.  Would have to see what you are planning on doing from a top or higher view to say for sure.

Have you thought of just recovering the seat in the gold?  might looks good to have a matching seat with a green tail.

option 1 looks better to me.

There is a lot of gold on that bike... the more I think about it, I like the way it is now... gold frame, BRG body, black seat.

Post by: Cole on December 16, 2008, 08:35:59 AM
I think I will go toward option one. I am waiting on a swatch of the green material to decide what to do with the rear seat.

The intent of the rear seat being green is to make it blend and look like a solo seat. If the green material does not match REALLY well then I wll probably go with the Carbon fiber material on both seats with the green/gold stripe. (not sure if you can see it on your monitor but the gold center stripe is surrounded by thin green stripes)

I know nothing about motorcycles, but I think option 1 looks a lot better than option 2.  Option 2 puts a little too much gold into the mix.

How many wheels do motorcycles have?  See you know something.  ;D

But it's not as easy as that.  A few months ago, I saw a three-wheeled scooter thing with two wheels in the front (I know, technically not a motorcycle).  Then, there's side cars, and those three-wheeled things with the VW engines...

Love the SV's, Almost started out with one of those for my first bike, got a YZF 600R, then an R1.  Kinda wish I went with the SV650, love the open look of the bike.

I got to ride the SV650 home after we bought it. An absolute blast to ride and sounds soooo sexy with the pipe on it. Arguably more fun to just ride than my R1.

I rode an SV650, back in 2001 after I had my Yamahas, and I had the same impression you did...should have ridden that first, but live and learn.  Hopefully next summer I will have a bike again, so I can go and ride with everyone.

The Speedy project has been moving kinda slow.

It is over at TFOG Wheelsports having an electrical glitch debugged.

Hoping to get it fired up and ridable soon!!!! Then I can work on all the real details of making this bike something cool.

I got the seats back from Luimoto today. I have been VERY excited about this.  Since the bike is not here I set them on the tail section to snap some quick pics to give everyone an update. (they will obviously fit better when actually locked onto the bike).

LOTS of work to still be done. I have to work on all the little details now that it is mostly complete and running. (so some of the stuff you see in the pictures will change)

Well, I dove into the Speedy again yesterday. Seems the Speedo has a broken clock spring. Which explains why my odometer works and the speedo did not.

Put some "Speedometer clock spring glue"  on it and will be headed out in a minute to see if it works.

While I was in there I decided to try something different with the Rizoma gauge cluster. The full bright polished unit just did not fit the bike very well. Not to mention it was kinda dinged up.

Here are a couple of pics of what it originally looked like.

I went for a brushed machined look and painted a few of the parts black to tone down the bling.

Here is what it looks like now.

I still have lots of work to do to make it a finished product. But here is how it sits right now. Obviously there are things on it that need to change still (bars, levers, mirrors, etc)

I've ridden it quit a bit and really enjoyed it. Want to narrow down some projects to a managable state.

It is a tough call but I find myself riding the R1 more than the Triple.
