Title: Garage Day May 1st
Post by: 03Indigo on March 25, 2004, 10:35:04 AM
I have that weekend off, might go on a drive with the Mini Cooper people, all of you are welcome to join if we do drive, but if there is not drive, was thinking of having a little garage day and BYOB(Beer and Burgers) BBQ.  What do you all think?  I might have my H-sport sway bars to put in by then, and might actually want a little help slapping those on the allroad.

So think about it, garage day at my house, Saturday May 1st, with munchies that we share with each other.

cheers
jon

I think that's a grand idea. Maybe we can get some detailing done to get cars prepped early for VWOTG?  Folks could clarbar and stuff to get that paint ready to shine.

I'm trying to convince Andrew to get his H-Sports and we can do them that day, we will see what turns up...that is a kinda big job on the Allroad, so I hope to start that early on in the day.  I also want to finish everything by 430-500pm at the latest since I will have dinner plans, so the earlier we can start, the better, I would be willing to get things rolling by 8am if anyone is interested.

Ahh yes, I remember now what I will want to work on. My belly pan!! I'll bring it on down and see if I can make some repairs to it and get it back on my poor exposed underside. I am so glad my control arm issue is getting fixed, so I won't need to do any goo-injections. If I can get the BP on and not dragging, and some detailing, my  baby will be ship-shape!

I won't have my H-sports to install along with my shocks ( the company I ordered from decided after I paid that they don't want to carry them anymore! ) I might just order some from somewheres else. I am hoping to make it after work... I don't have much to mod atm, since I can't buy anything I want yet, friggen tax man!! But if there is time, I wouldn't mind some buffing with this super duper swirlie machine that you have? Haven't detailed my car since I got it  8O  Cept for the car wash guys across my work for like $20 hehe Oh, going to go talk to Chas this week and see if a C-bar would be useful on my car, we will see about that! :)

Jonathan, added you to the list, hope you can get there soon enough, a decent buffing takes about 3-4 hours, even with the power buffer.  May need you to pick up some supplies, not sure I have enough for everyone.

In order for us to enjoy our evening, I hope to have most projects finished by 5pm so we can go out and celebrate.  Worff is leaving town that following Monday, so I was hoping we could all go out to show him a propper send off.

Does anyone have those pop-up tents we can put in the driveway so we can have some shade for buffing while we are working on other cars in the garage?  That would help out tons.

I completely understand about the address and privacy.  Thanks for the PM.

Let me look into the tent setup, I can't guarantee anything, but let me look into it.  I will bring all the tools and jack stands that I have.  I have a new set of inline ratcheting wrenches that may come in handy.  I haven’t used them yet; we'll see how well they work.  I will probably be up around 10:00a.  See ya there!

Jon - I'm hoping to make it too.  I hope to change out the spark plugs and change out a few more of the vacuum lines.  If I can make it I'll bring all my tools (including torque wrench).  Not sure if I can make the drive too so I might try to do the other stuff first and make it out for the drive.  We'll see.

Sounds good Jon, I don't have a pop up tent, I can ask friends to see if they do... If I am not there in time to buff, no biggie at all, just let me know if I need to get anything to bring :) Be glad to get stuff before I come by.  I am usually done with work around 12:30 ish, so I *should* be able to be down to your place by 2 or so, if not earlier if I am ready to go right after work ;) Unless of course I decide to take the whole day off

Jonathan, I think the pads I have will be good for a few more cars, and your typical car care buffing and waxing compounds will do.  Something along the lines of Stage 2 and Stage 3 from either McGuires or Mothers will do pretty well.  I also want to get some more Finessit from the local supply store, which is about $30 per bottle, and is good for about 3-4 cars worth of buffing.  I will check with Mike R. as to where that store is and post it for everyone as well as where to get pads for the buffer, as well as the types of pads that are best.

I will get that info sometime this week, and post some options as to which products to look at and where to get them.

I so far plan to be there, I have a 10' by 10' canopy I can bring as well as the brake bleeder.

I would like to do some detail work on the Audi, there are some scratches I would like to buff out and I will hopefully have touched up the nicks by then so i can buff those parts and wax on....wax off.

I will also be doing Rain-X as well.  I have never applied it before, but the Audi had it when i bought it and it is freakin awesome.

Title: Garage Day May 1st
Post by: MattyB on April 19, 2004, 09:47:52 AM
I have done this many times on my racecars, but without the power bleeder.  The process should be pretty easy.   I would imagine that you just fill the powerbleeer, pressurize it, hook it up to the master, then go to each corner and open the bleeder valve until the fluid runs clear.  The only tricks I see will be disposing of the old fluid and agreeing between everyone which fluid we are going to use.  We'll need to make a catch bottle if one is not provided with the power bleeder.  Jay?

If we do go forward with this I would like to preview the power bleeder instructions so that we aren't fumbling that day.

Anyone have recommendations for fluid?  I'd like to move up to one that could handle the additional heat of the occasional track day...but that wont' break the bank.

Cheers,
Matt

Not sure about the brake fluid type, but I've heard one particular brand causes a squeaky clutch. I don't have a clutch (tiptronic) so just let me know what you go with. I also track my car so I'm interested in the higher boiling point fluid.

I haven't used the bleeder yet, so it is all new to me.  The instructions are with it.  We will need a container for catching the fluid.  We will need a plcae to dispose of it as well.

Give your local Jiffy Lube or  Grese Monkey a call I know of a Jiffy Lube here in the springs that will dispose of oil and brake fluid for a small fee, like 3 or 4 bucks.

Well guys, I may or may not be joining you guys for the GTG. I just sent my car in to get and alignment with the new tires and they said that the upper guide links (or upper control arms as we know them as) and the tie rod ends are loose and need to be replaced. I have desided that I might just buy the entire kit from ECS and do ALL the links and bushings.  That way I dont have to do it again anytime in the future. I know this is a fairly long process to change out all the links. I might just do it in my new garage when I move in this weekend. I probably wont get to it until the weekend of the first though. I also dont want to have to drive all the way home from Jons house without an alignment on my new tires. I will be getting one probably that Monday after the install. I most likly will have Autosport Works do the alignment... I heard they have a 4-wheel alignment rack at a reasonable charge.

Jefferson County will take it at thier Rooney Rd. recycling center for $13.  I haven't called around to the above oil changers but hopefully we can find someplace cheap.

Anyone have any recommendations on fluid?

whoa, haven't checked this thread for a while and it didn't occur to me how soon it's coming up.

I have a few mods I want to do at the GTG, if there's time:
-Brake bleeding.
-replace horn.
-replace crank pulley (if the new one arrives by then).
-Rear sway bars (if it doesn't come in this week).

I'll probably pick up a Porter Cable power buffer from Detailer's Paradise and will bring my supply of car cleaning stuff for everyone to use (claybar, Klasse, wax, leather treatment, etc.).  And of course, I'll bring beers and munchies.

Sounds like there is a lot to do!  I will bring food, drink, and my W8 to the GTG.  The only issue with my W8 is a REALLY annoying chatter / squeek coming from the right side dash.  At times, it nearly drives me nuts ...  Anyways, I would love to help anyone that needs work done... so count me in on the fun!

Squeaking dash is a common thing with the B5.5 platform cars.  It has been said that you can cut sections of socks up and stuff them between the windsheild and the lower part f the dash where the 2 parts meet.  Its been proved that this is the way to correct the issue.

I was going to make a catch bottle, but I don't have a larger container to hold all of the old fluid for recycling (someone in my family recently "cleaned house" and pitched all of my saved containers).  If you could come up with something, that would be great.  ;)

what about a one gallon distilled water jug?  I don't have one, but we can buy a jug at the grocery store if we have nothing else...then just drink the water, and use the bottle for the brake fluid...I will check bently later this evening as to how much volume we are talking about

A water jug should work fine.  Also, I've received a response from the Parts4VW's, the only difference between the two types of fluid is color. I've read some good reviews about the performance of the ate fluid, but some have commented that the blue can stain.  If so, then the bleeder could very well turn blue.  Having not used the products before I don't know if this is a big deal; however...since this is a club bleeder, what is the consensus on color? Blue?  Gold? Does it matter to anyone?

Regarding Brake Bleeding and volumes...Bently has no mention of volume.  This is taken directly from the Bently......

In section Repair Group R 47-1 Brake system, bleeding

Note-
•Bleeding the braking system on vehicles with ABS is carried out as for vehicles with conventional braking systems.
•Only use new brake fluid conforming to US standard FMVSS 116 DOT 4
•Genuine VW/Audi brake fluid conforms to this specification.
•Brake fluiid is poisonous. Do to its corrosive nature brake fluid must not come into contac with paint
•Brake fluis is hygroscopic, which means it absorbes moistre from the ambient air and must therefore always be stored in air tight containers.
•Rinse off spillages by using plenty of water.
•Volkswagen recommends replacing the brake fluid every two years

-Buil-up brake pressure in brake system by pumping the brake pedal.
-Following bleeding sequence, attach bleeder bottle hose and open bleed screw.
1-Right-rear brake caliper
2-Left rear brake caliper
3-Right front brake caliper
4-Left front brake caliper
-with brake pedal held down, close bleed screw.
-Repeat operation until no air is present.

That is all the Bently has on brake bleeding...sorry guys :satisfied:

I am going to go out on a  long limb here.. When i recently bled my jetta's brake system we used almost 1 liter to flush the whole system.  Since we replaced all the lines on my car, i know we lost a fair amount of fluid. I would 'speculate' that if you have a few liters around (.5ltr - .75ltr per car) you should be fine.  I can't imagine the passat or A4 system needs much different.

My guess is that you would need a press, otherwise it would come out too easily.  You may need to have a shop do that.  We have a pretty extensive list of cars to work on already for that day, maybe too many, there are some big projects to accomplish and only limited room in the garage.  But if we all work together and don't mess around, we should be able to move cars in and out quick enough.  The biggest job will be Daves car and his control arms...and he said he can't make it until 10am.

Dave, if you are reading this, is there any way you can show up earlier so we can start on your car first?  otherwise someone else may take up garage space and that will delay the start time on your car by a couple more hours.

Just thinking how we are gonna get all this stuff done in one day...and what time we can start, the earlier the better, as if we need parts, the parts places are only open until noon for VW and Audi.  Something to keep in mind.

I'll probably need help putting on my Nike Swoosh graphic on the back window. Also does anyone know if the Bentley manual explains how to install a Type R wing onto my Avant?

Seriously though. I'd love to see how I might be able to buff out some scratches that I put on the car myself.

Jon, occasionally my auto leveling light has come on every now and then since the shock install, but only when the wheel is turned all the way to one side or the other. Lights seem to work normal to me though, so I haven't bothered with messing with the clip just yet.

Does anyone have a Gtech Pro or similar product?

Thanks.

BTW, sway bars should be in the mail.

Van, we can look clip when you get here.  I am a pro at the nike swoosh graphic...but I think it would be nicer if you had it on all 3 rear windows, not just the rear.

Not sure how much time we will have for buffing, we have some big mechanical projects in mind, and buffing takes a good 4-5 hours for a complete detail, and we need the garage space for things like your sways.

If we get those tents set up, then there will be some shade and people can detail in the driveway.

did you get the H-sports?

Hey Van,
I have some polishing/clay bar/waxing to do, also.  I'm guessing that's going to take a back seat to the other projects.  There's just so much scheduled for the day already I don't think I'm going to get to it.  Do you want to hook up some time and we can do that together?

So MattyB, add a liter of fluid for me too and I will contribute for both that and my part of the bleeder.  Amanda, are you going to have the brake tool there?  I would like to borrow it at the end of the day since my brake job will be on the list in the next couple of weeks.

Jon, I am looking at about between 2.5 to 3 hours for the work.  The only issue that I am concerned about is if the tie rods are rusted up or locked down.  I have read at that point I may have to bring in a torch, which I have.  That part makes me nervous.  As far as my arrival time, I cannot get there any earlier.  As long as I have a level area, like the sidewalk or curb, and nice weather, I should be ok.  If not then I will help with the wrenching of other cars until the garage opens up.

It's pretty funny how Boris is a "noob."  Hell, he's been doing this as long as anyone.  I know it's just based on number of posts or whatever, just thought it was funny.

Anyway Boris check out the ultimate timing belt kit at ECS.  That's what most, if not all, of us did a couple months ago.  You'll also want some G12 coolant and distilled water.  I think I have enough coolant for you.  I'd probably just give the guys at ECS a call, tell 'em what you're doing and see if they have any other recommendations.  While you're in there you may want to consider a snub mount and/or electric fan kit.  The EFK can be had for around $140 from Supreme Power Parts.

In my opinion, the EFK is worth it.  Aside from the chip, it's easily the best mod for the dollar.  It's something you can feel evenly through the entire rev range.  There's not many mods you can say that about with the 1.8T.  I don't know of anything else you can get that will increase engine power so much for so little.  Plus, it puts no additional stress on the engine.
In case you can't tell, I'm happy I did it.

Hey Van,
I have some polishing/clay bar/waxing to do, also.  I'm guessing that's going to take a back seat to the other projects.  There's just so much scheduled for the day already I don't think I'm going to get to it.  Do you want to hook up some time and we can do that together?
BTW, I can't wait to see and ride in your car after all the recent mods.  Jon says it looks really cool.

Cool, see ya there. I think it looks nice. I might actually keep the lowers unpainted now.

I am SOOOOOOO ready for Saturday.  :D    The tie rods, tie rod bolt kit and haynes manual arrived.  I also decided to splurge and picked up a W8 sunroof kit.  The new beige does not look that bad compaired to the old.

I will be there, but my TB kit will not be here yet, so I'll just hang around. I will need somebody's garage on the weekend of 5/8-9 for my TB change since I live in apartment now. Anybody volunteer?

Hey Boris, I won't be home all day on the 8th, otherwise, you would be more than welcome to come over.

Hey Dave... not suggesting you'll need help, but if you do need help with the W8 thing let me know. I'm an electronics goddess. :D I also have a bunch of tap and splice connectors I can bring if you need some.

Thanks for the offer.

Actually with the help of instructions from ECS Tuning I had it installed in about 15 min.  Their kit has everything including a wire tap. Can you believe I installed it in the parking lot of the UPS depot!  Can you say NO patience.

Getting closer to the pimp ride that I alwas dreamed of.  8)  Rollin' with Momma, and Lil' Bitch of the Toecutters MC!

Man, I wish I didn't have to work early Saturday, or lived in the Denver area like a lot of you!!  So much fun stuff going on lately :)
