Title: HELP!?!
Post by: kraut-sled on March 31, 2004, 02:21:53 PM
As you all know... I recently installed Nuespeed Sport Springs and Bilstein shock in my B5.5. I love the look and the performance; however I have a question about the ride. I have noticed that my car vibrates a little at speeds over 60 MPH. I have had the tires balanced, and that helped a little, but the vibrating is still there. So any ideas as to the cause?

Notes:

I was not smart enough to figure out how to get the spring mounts off the front, so I have the stock Sachs shock in the front and the Bilsteins in the rear. I will be rectifying this soon.   :P

I did not align the front end, as the wheel is straight when I drive.

I have 235 45 R17 wheels / tires.

Often after a lowering you need an alignment.  You may track straight but the alignment can still be off.  I have a similar issue when my 17's were on the Passat.  You will get inner tire wear in the front if you're not careful.  I forsee an alignment in your near future.

I need to have an alignment done.  I had one shortly after I changed my shocks.  But I still vibrate between 40-60MPH.  I am sure in the last year everything has settled a bit more.

1.  check the alignment.

2. If you are running wheels with cenering rings, check the rings to make sure that are still in good condition and retourque the wheels.

3.  If you are running wheel spacers check the spacers to make sure they are not cracked or loose.

4.. Out of other ideas right now. I will get back to you though.

I had similar issues until I put on my hub centric rings and then my vibrations are completely gone.  Smooth sailing.

I will start with the rings, as I think they are a good idea anyway.  Any local sources for them?  What is the cost going to be?

Yes, I got mine at Discount Tire for $15.  If they tell you they have two different sizes for your car (like they did for me) try the smaller one first.

Well I pulled off the first wheel and discovered that I have the rings already.  (I did not know what to look for so I never noticed them)

So I guess now the answer is clear - alignment time.

However I first have to pull the front apart and instal the Bilsteins.

Even if you have rings. Inspect them, they an wear, crack or just plain not fit well. Especially fi the snap ring holding them in is missing or damaged. They are cheap, and it might be worth trying a new set in there.

A good alignement is defintly worth the money, well once you install the bilsteins..

I have the Bilsteins on the front now, and the rings look good all the way around, so I am off to get and alignment this week.

I am gone go get this all done someday....
