Title: First Annual Albuquerque GTG May 14/15/16
Post by: Rusty on April 06, 2004, 02:42:11 PM
WOO-HOO!!! :onfire:  It's finally confirmed.  May 15th is Open Track Day at Sandia Motorsports Park here in Albuquerque.  Along with the event will be an RMCB5/CB5 GTG sponsored by yours truly. There's already some of you guys planning to attend... :lookround:    Here's the schedule (well, it's what I want to do, anyway - suggestions are welcome):

Day 1, Friday May 14th:
Friday evening "hello everyone" burger grill at my place, followed by a trip to the Albuquerque drag strip - Let's see how your chipped cars stack up against my stock ECU! :P    Dragstrip fee is about $10.

Day 2, Saturday May 15th: www.sandiamotorsports.com
Track Day.  Gates open at 8:00 AM, entry fee is $70. Track time wil start after the driver's meeting, and goes until the organizers get tired and go home, which is usually about 4:00.  You need a helmet, and your car shouldn't leak fluids.  Make sure your brake pads, rotors, tires, and "head" are in top shape.  Swap out for higher-performance "track pads" (e.g. Hawk HP+, HPS, or your favorite brand) if you can.
Please Note:  This is NOT a sanctioned "driver education" event, so if you crunch your car on the track, your insurance is not going to cover it.  So don't race - just enjoy driving the track and learning.

Saturday Night - Kelly's brew pub after the track, for a few really good local brews and possibly food.  Or we can just go back to my house and grill again - BYOM - there's a great fresh meat market near my house.

Day 3, Sunday, May 16th:
A nice late-morning drive along the backroads through the Jemez Mtns to Santa Fe.  Bring your swimsuits as there are hotsprings on the way - if we have time and they aren't too crowded. Lunch at the Oasis Cafe in Santa Fe. Then, if you want to head on back to Colorado, you're an hour closer to home.  Everyone is welcome to scatter or come back to ABQ and hang out at my house as late Sunday as you care to.

I can put up 3 to 5 people, depending on sleeping preferences.  (Pat - you're staying at my place, right?)  There's room for 2 - 5 tents in the backyard depending on how big they are.

Will post links to my house as well as local accomodations as soon as we get a better idea of who's coming. Everybody Come!  I'd love to see 20+ cars lined up in my neighborhood!!!

Bring FRS radios and comfy folding chairs.

Of COURSE!!!! Everybody's invited.

So far we have 2 at my house, Pat and Amanda, so our extra beds are spoken for.   There's the living room sofa left, and a child or two in my son's room, and then there's the floor if you bring a mattress, and the yard with room for tents.

Just in case you're allergic - warning: we have four kitties.

If we hook up for the drive as a group, I have two radios on hand (the third- a Kenwood is still out there in RMCB5 land somewhere).  I think it would be really fun.  Chime in on the idea.

Post by: Colorado_Baja on April 07, 2004, 11:12:45 AM
I think that 2 way radios would be a must for the trip, especially when we get down into New Mexico where cell coverage gets spotty.

I think I have 3 on had but ill have to check.

I would like to shoot a video of the 1st annual Albuquerque GTG,(as I will be a cinematography(sp?) minor next semester, hopefully) the trip down the days at the track and all the random shanagans(sp) in between. I would make it available to club members for a small price (basically my cost for the DVDís that it would be burned on 4 or 5 bucks).

Unfortunately my video camera is out of commission for the moment, its being repaired by Sony for a defect that developed with the lcd screen.

So I guess I will just wait and see if they ship it back to me before the trip, witch is doubtful. So if anyone has a camera that they would like to donate to the cause for a short wile that would be awesome, shoot me a PM.

I need a ride pleaseÖ.

Due to certain problems that have just come to light involving my family and my trip to Sedona Arizona, that I have scheduled right after the New Mexico GTG I will not be able to take my MKIV for the GTG. I would still like to attend if possible thatís why Iím posting. If it would not be too much trouble for some one to swing by and pick me up on their way thru the springs, Iím fully willing to chip in for travel expenses along the way.
Other wise it looks like I might have to sit this one out. :(

Thanks for reading

Bummer, Greg - I was hoping to see the re-repo'ed Golf.  Glad you're coming down anyway... I like the "roof rack" idea - infinitely variable downforce...

Ya I was kinda bummed to finally give in but the time table just wont work if I drive... That and im still waiting for my VW dealership to call me and tell me what the weird "ping" noise is...
Plus I wanted to take the MKIV and whoop up on you all at the track   I would probly get whooped on.

Amanda please rember that im just a youngin, behavor like that may scar me for life!

And I for one DONT like the roof rack idea.... talk about a bad case of wind burn...

Boris man, I will accept your 2 conditions if you accept these 2 conditions.
1. Your beverage of choice not be a sissy one, lets rember I have a reputation to uphold. I cant be seen in random New Mexico gas stations buying a sissy drink.
2. You allow my pet monkey, Lupo to come along to work your bicycle pump turbo.

Thanks for the reminder, Dave - I've updated the list.

For everyone: Bring your swimsuit - there's some natural hot springs on the Sunday drive through the Jemez.  For the track, bring comfortable folding chairs; and I have a canopy, but an extra one would be great.

And I also have one of the old school lawn chairs that fold flat, that one is not as space freindly. :D  I think that they have at least one more of those chairs that fold into a bag though, now that I think about it. :D

Also rember if we caravan 2 way radios would also be a good idea. I also think that caravaning would be a ton of fun. From what I hear its about 5.5 hours to Albq. And if its going to be any thing like the COS drive it should take us about 5 hours or less. Just some thoughts.... :D

I cant wait.
Also I dont have a helmet, im not going to be driveing so its not a big deal but i assume that ill ride here and thare, so does anyone have a spare to loan?

Greg

5.5 hrs is making damn good time, if you make under 5.5 with a group and traffic you are doing great.

My own experince...... watch for cops around Walsenberg, Trinidad and Raton.  The north side of Trinidad there is almost always a State boy and also on the south side of Raton.  You can flat out fly over Raton Pass on the Colorado side (great set of turns to rally).  The very top has the port of entry for trucks and there is a radar up htere to check truck speeds.  It will set your radar off.  Once past there you are usually good until you get to the bottom of the pass.

Please head my advise...I saw a new beetle pass me just outside Trinidad and get nailed hard by the state boy.  I was doing around 90ish and she passed me doing at least 110.  Johnny did the median u turn and had dust flying chasing her down.

Have fun and becareful!

Rob

I am most likely getting V1 before we leave for this and the ND charity trip. I recently got $300 ticket on I-25, so I will shell the money to prevent the tax collectors from future revenue.

It may be interesting because I have 5/4 court date. I am not sure, but I may be very close to 12 points after all is said and done. Maybe I'll just postpone the court date as much as I can so not to lose my DL. Shit.

The ones I listed were because they were on the major freeway exits i.e. simple to find and get to/from.

The Inn at Paradise is like 5 minutes from my house.

The Super 8 on Barbara Loop is 10-15 minutes away, and a LONG way from the freeway.  You'd get off I-25 at Paseo Del Norte, then you'd drive almost to my house, then you'd head north another 10-15 minutes to get to Rio Rancho.

The Le Baron on Menaul would be 25-30 minutes from my house.

In order to get breakfast before we go (both Saturday and Sunday), we'll be getting up early, so I'd recommend someplace close.  The Inn at Paradise would be ideal.

The all-important FOOD POST:

Here's what I've come up with so far for food:

Friday evening - my place. I thought I'd cook burgers on the grill, or maybe chicken.  Let me know your preference.

Sat morning - Need to be at track by 7 AM, so breakfast at McDonalds (I40/Coors) at about 6:30 on the way to the track.

Sat Lunch - at the track, there is nothing.  We'll have to bring food or have someone go get something.

Sat Evening - I thought after the track time, we could all go to Kelly's Brew Pub for a round or two of beer.  The food is good, so we could eat there, too.

Sun Morning - I'm gonna cook y'all a good Tennessee breakfast of bacon, sausage, eggs, biscuits, and GRAVY - yum... gonna start cookin' at about 7.

Sun Lunch - the Oasis Cafe in Santa Fe - it will be the end of our mountain drive.

If you have other ideas please post!

I also have 3 radios I am bringing.

P.S. Rusty.. your plan sounds good. I'll volunteer to either go grab food for you guys or be the sandwich making bitch in the morning and bring coolers.. either way. Coolers with foodies and drinks are always nice to have at the track....

Sun Lunch - the Oasis Cafe in Santa Fe - it will be the end of our mountain drive.

If you have other ideas please post!

Alright, as far as Friday night...well, if it's on the grill I'll eat it.  I love both chicken and burgers.
This plan sounds really good.  I'm especially looking forward to a breakfast of bacon and eggs drowning in a trough of gravy!
Is there any good place near the track to get something for lunch or should be bring down a cooler and make sandwiches or something similar?

Looks like everyone is thinking sammitches for the track.  Sounds good to me.

UPDATE on Track Day:

Wallace has revised his pricing structure because he lost $400 last track day.  I think a bunch of people must not have paid, 'cause there were plenty of cars there.  So instead of splitting the track fee up, he now charges a flat $70 per-car at the gate before you come in.

And *relief* from early-Saturday stuff.  Gates open at 8:00, so we get an extra hour of sleep!

I'm heading down to Albuquerque that day for a completely different reason. One of my favorite bands is coming over from the UK for the first time in twelve years and playing down there Friday night.

If you cats are thinking about a wagon train (albeit a very fast one) leaving early afternoon or if someone needs a ride I may have an open seat.

Earlier I saw that there might be plans for some drag racing? Is that still on? I have never been timed on a track, was wondering how embarrassed I would get trying it ;)  I may have some beer left from our last party, should be decent stuff, will bring some if we still have it :)

Yeah, Friday night!  The strip is open until midnight or so.  I thought after we eat and hang out a while, we'd head over there between 8 and 9.

My best time so far is a 16.91.  That's equivalent to high 15's-low 16's at sea level.  I'm counting on dropping at least a second off of that this time... I wanna break into the 15's.

Quarter-mile is FUN!!! I never had a very high opinion of it until I did it.  It's a whole 'nuther realm of racing, and can get very addicting.  It's amazing how much it takes (HP, TQ, car setup, and technique) just to make a fraction of a second difference.

OBTW, it's about 10 bucks entry fee.

Have you ever had your car on the track?

1) It's an experience!!!
2) well worth the $70 track fee.
3) Even if you only do a few laps. You don't have to bash your car all day (like I used to... I just couldn't get enough at first!)
4) I'll be happy to drive you around and show you the lines
5) and I'd be happy to ride along as an instructor.
6) And there's the dragstrip Friday night.  Wouldn't you love to launch at the "christmas tree" and hurtle your car down the quarter mile?  Just once, at least? Maybe you'll get lucky and nail a rabbit, like I did! Passat vs. Rabbit at ABQ Drags... wrong turn at Pismo Beach (http://www.clubb5.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=59767)
7) Just think of all the experiences you're gonna miss if you don't bring your car...

These "convincings" go for everyone else who isn't bringing their car (Greg! :) ) - I think everyone who comes without a car is gonna wish they had one once we get to the track... :bigups:

Next time for sure, cant bring my ride this time for 2 major reasons. 1. Bought a couple hundred bucks worth of plane tickets from albq to sedona.(non refundable)
2. To make it home from sedona in time for work on the next friday/ sat I would have to avrage about 120 mph or so, I dont have a problem with that but our fine law enforcement might. :D

The Valentine will be here on Monday.

I don't care what food we have, so burger and chicken is good. Rusty I am sure you have grocery stores down there so we'll get the stuff on F or S.

It sounds like we have a couple good options for times to leave Denver.  It sounds like everyone but Noob-Shum is up for leaving any time on Friday, so here's what I'm thinking.
A.  We leave Denver around 6:00 a.m. and drive straight to Alb.  This way we get there early afternoon and have some time to just chill with Rusty and Diedra before dinner and hitting the drag strip.  We'd also miss the peak of the Colorado Springs rush hour by doing this.  Of, if this is you early for some of you, we could just leave around 7:00 and bear the traffic.  This is my first choice.
B.  Leave around 11:00 and caravan with Noob-Shum.  He will likely work until 10:00 a.m., wich means he wouldn't be to Park Meadows until 10:45.  We would all be able to caravan if we did this, but wouldn't get there with any time to spare between dinner and the drag strip.
C.  Most of us could leave early, cruise down to the Sand Dunes, spend a couple hours there, then meet Noob-Shum on I-25 and caravan the rest of the way.
There is a chance Noob-Shum won't work that morning, in which case I think we should all leave early.  Let me know what you guys think.

Latest I will be working is 9:30, 9:45 ish, I will not let the gals schedule anyone later than 9:15 ish.  If I don't get more people scheduled by mid week, I am gonna cancel the day out completely, and plan on leaving earlier to NM.  If we can meet up, that would be cool, if not, I am ok with that too :)  Can't wait to get down there!!

Im down for witch ever plan works best. Just rember to allot about 15 min to swing by and grab me in the springs. I live about 2 miles or less from the interstate. Also a note about the traffic in the springs rush hour wise. the only times that the traffic is really bad is about 8 in the morning heading south bound or at about 5 pm heading north bound. and thats only on certin sections of the interstate. so I wouldent worry about that too much.

Alright, I'm making an executive decision.  We're all leaving from the Park Meadows Krispy Kreme parking lot this Friday morning at 6:30.  Of course, I will be there by 6:15 to partake in sugar-coated fatty fried dough. :)
We'll leave no later than 6:30 from KK and drive straight to Albuquerque.  Pueblo Motorsports Park is not looking like a good option Friday, since there will be vintage races there the following two days.  All of those guys will be practicing there Friday, so it'll be busy.
I'm guessing we'll arrive in Albuquerque sometime between 2:00 and 3:00 after a liesurly lunch.  That'll give us time to relax and get dinner ready before heading out to the drag strip.

RACE GAS:
It's 101 octane, the place is at the intersection of 1st and Mountain.  It's $4.25/gal (!) - that's a $60 tank for me, but now that the weather is warming up, I'm at the raggged edge of timing so it's good insurance for the track. I'm filling up on lunch break tomorrow, because it's close to work.  Open 8-5 M-F, 9-2 Sat.  If you go on Saturday it will cut into track time; on Friday it would be faster to go there first before you come to my house.

Directions:

Head south on I-25 to the I-40 interchange.  The two far right lanes will be I-40 only, so get in the 3rd lane from the right.

Exit at Lomas,  #225, in the middle of the interchange.  You'll exit to a frontage road, still heading south.

The first light is Mountain, turn West(right).

3rd light on Mountain is 1st street - "Pacific Pride Commercial Fueling" on the NE corner.

To get to my house from there, continue heading W on Mountain to Rio Grande - it will be several lights, you'll be close to Rio Grande when you start seeing museums.

Head North (right) on Rio Grande to I-40. Enter I-40 West from the left lane on Rio Grande.

I-40 West to Coors North.

Coors N about 5-6 miles to Montano West turn left. (There's a Discount Tire and Dion's Pizza on the SW corner, and Walgreen's drugs on NW corner.)

Montano W to the first light, Taylor Ranch N turn right.

Taylor Ranch N to the second light, Taylor Ranch W turn left. (Taylor Ranch makes a LH turn at the light).  There's a big park and school on the SW corner.

Follow Taylor Ranch past a light, then curving around 2 or 3 blocks, then a big dip/arroyo on the road.  Take your first left past this dip, it's Basin Creek.

Then an almost immediate right at the stop sign, Deerfield.

Follow Deerfield around to the next stop sign, Thornwood, turn right.

I'm about 5 or 6 houses up.  Look for the beat-up green Scirocco out front. :)

Thanks Rusty for your WONDERFUL hospitality.  It was a great weekend, and a LOT of fun hangin' with everyone.  You and your wife were sooooo good to us, thanks for letting us come down, feeding us, and letting us invade your house for a few days ;)  :P  I really liked that track, even though it was a bitch to get around some parts of it (for me at least!).

I can't wait to see some of that video, Greg was hanging outside our car windows, and outside of Jason's sunroof to get some of the footage, it should be SWEET!

Like Noob_Shum said, thanks again...A LOT.  I don't think my own mom treats me that well when I visit her! :)   And I surely don't eat that well at my own place!

I third that.. you guys were nothing but wonderful to us, and I really really appreciate it. I hope we can do the same for you and Diedra sometime this year.

I honestly can't remember the last time I had as much fun as I had over the past 3 days.

I am about to check out the stills and videos I took this weekend.. will post when I get them up to the gallery.

OK here's my "diary" of the weekend.  I had such a great time...

We started out Friday kind of late.  Pat had some tire(s) start blistering on the way down, so the replacement process was an arduous combination of "411" calls and a double-back (or was that a triple-back?) to Santa Fe.  But he got the right set of killer Yoko AVS ES100's and all was well.  I had a couple of great goodies come along with the ride - the Kamei grill from Jay's B5, and a brand-new shiny FMIC from a speed shop near Chas. We had a great time Friday night just hanging at the house and nibbling, swapping stories while Diťdra grilled burgers and brats - she made these huge 1/2+ lb burgers and I don't think anyone could eat the whole thing! After dinner, I got out the whiteboard with a track map on it and attempted to teach everyone what I knew about the track.  Problem was, I forget unless I'm actually in the car on the track!  We didn't hit the dragstrip because it was late and everyone was tired.

Friday night was not much sleep due to adrenaline for the next day's track experience...

Saturday we started by meeting at Twister's for breakfast burritos.  This place looks like the tacky diner from hell, but it has great breakfast burritos!  At the track a little after 8, everyone got in the gate OK and we set up the canopy.  Driver's meeting at 9, where we split up into groups:
Group 1 = 1:30's laptimes
Group 2 = 1:40's
Group 3 = 1:50's
Group 4 = rookies to the track
The rookies (everyone from RMCB5 plus a couple others) got a short classroom lesson from "PJ", while I took "flag training" from Wallace.  I had agreed to help them run the event and that's what they needed most.  So I manned the flagstand most of the day, except when my group (Group 2) was running.  Anyway, the first run group for rookies was led by "PJ" in a big silver van, showing everyone the lines.  It was hilarious!  After the first run, everyone bolted downtown to get 101 octane race gas, a big plus especially in the alititude (5800') and heat.  Although the weather wasn't really too hot - it was a perfect day, slightly too windy but still great.

Everyone from our GTG represented well, running laptimes in the low 1:50's and high 1:40's.  Pat was especially happy at this track, running consistent 1:44's and 1:45's, which is a great time for a newbie at the track.  I was running consistent 1:44's and 1:45's - my best time is a 1:42 in cold weather.  Pat was down on boost - he was only getting 5 lbs!!! Pretty sure it was just heatsoak - it ran fine in town later that night.  Time to get that FMIC installed!!!   Props to Jason for man-handling that W8 around the hairpins with his P/S gone out, and props to everyone for having a fun but safe time.  There were a couple of jerks on the track, but none from our group. I got to black-flag three different cars! - ahh, the power...

After the track we had great Margaritas and New Mexican food at Sadie's restaurant.  The night was still young so we hit the 'strip!  Pat was still down on boost, hitting mid 17's, but Jason and Jonathan kicked butt with mid-to-high 15's.  I was hitting high 17's - my previous best was 16.91, again in cold weather.  Pat and I both need an FMIC!!!  And I need a richer A/F at WOT...  Coming back from the 'strip, we hung out at my house for awhile, enjoying vids and pics from the day, then had a good night's sleep for the next day.

Sunday started with breakfast at my house - good ol' Tennessee cookin' - bacon and sausage and eggs and biscuits and gravy - yum.  I had fun cooking for everyone!  Then we hit our mountain drive, which some people said was the best one they'd ever been on!  We started out from ABQ, going the back way up into the Jemez Mountains.  We took it kind of easy - backing off to let slower traffic get way in front so we could haul ass through the twisties!  Stopped at the hot springs, hiking up to see them but leaving the experience to another time - allofasudden, it was 12:15 and we needed to head to Santa Fe for lunch!  So we hauled ass outta there, blasting through the crest of the Jemez toward Los Alamos at very satisfying speed.  Passing through Los Alamos we headed down the front side of the Jemez led by Jason in the W8 with Greg sticking out the sunroof videotaping the line of cars careening down the mountian!!!  What crazy fun, especially when we flew by a cop coming up the other direction and he just smiled!

Lunch in Santa Fe was yummy at one of our favorite restaurants - the Oasis Cafe - all organic eclectic wonderful cuisine.  Buffalo burgers and lamb enchiladas and all sorts of other interesting and delicious dishes.  A great lunch out on the patio with a car crash in the nearby intersection for entertainment.  Then it was time to go - d*mn I wish we lived closer together, 'cause I just have the best time with you guys.  Greg came back with us to Albuquerque so he could catch a flight, and then everyone was gone... :-(

Our house is always open - you don't have to wait for a special event.  But the next track day is Sunday, July 18. :D

OBTW I was tickled that I made it through track day w/o wearing out brakes or tires.  But this morning, I got a good look at my pax side front tire - it's bald!  Totally, evenly, worn completely out.  That's some good alignment!!!

Thanks everyone!!! We had a GREAT time!!!  See you again, the sooner the better!

This is a shot of Jason in his W8 crossing the line at the track.

And this last one is a pic of an old VW that we saw on the drive down, this thing is lower than it looks and the windows are darker than they look 8O

These are just a few of the shots that I took, I ended up with about 150 shots to sort thru and I took about 4.5 hours hours of video I think, that Jason needs to sort thru and compose a DVD (hint...hint):D Some of the video was shot out of Jasons sun roof at good clip. It will be awsome!
Jason is a very busy guy so look for a post on that in a couple weeks.

Thanks to everyone that came along and to Rusty and Deadra (sorry if i killed that spelling) for every thing I had a total blast!!

That's a killer shot of that bug.  Crazy ride, yo.  And that shot of Rusty's car...so well centered, perfect backdrop and road.
Check out the rubber Jason left by the finish line.

Oh man, that looks like it was such a great weekend.  You guys should post some of those pics on ClubB5 and VWVortex (Rocky Mountain section) when you get the chance too.

I really wish I could have made it, but the VWOTG show was unbelieveable as well.  It had perhaps the best mkII showing I have ever seen or heard about.  Indescribeable.  People are still reeling from the blast that was the mkII's there.  It was a downright inspirational weekend for both groups, which is all we can ask for.

Wow, great pic Greg!  That's incredible - you should definitely submit that (or I will) for the 2005 CB5 calendar.  It really is a perfect picture.

Ok boys and girls, now is the time you all have been waiting for. I finished editing and cropping the photos that I took on the Albq. trip. So now you will have photos to go with the stories. There are about 40 photos total that I decided to post. I started with about 80 or so I think. If any of you that were on the trip or any one else for that matter would like these for your own collection PM me and I will send you a zip file via email. :D Enjoy!

First of all, all the props and thanks go to Rusty and Diťdra for an awesome weekend, and amazing hospitality.  This was a break I really needed, and you two went out of your ways to make sure it is something I will remember!  Thank you!

Now for the DVD .....

It is in process.  Pat, Amanda and I worked on it last week, and accomplished a lot.  However, there is almost 5 hours of video that I have to reorganize, chop, play with, add music, and other cool goodies.  The plan is to have a complete DVD with a still slide show, video and some credits....  I will have more time to work with it this week, and I hope to have it finished within the next couple of weeks.  I will post more information as it comes along ...

Its Complete!

Finally, the DVD is done!  We were able to chop five hours of video down to 34 minutes, including a slide show at the end.  This DVD is awesome, and really showcases the great time we had on this trip!

So, now for the legal BS.  Those of you who drove on this trip know we must be careful about the distribution of a video.  I cannot post downloadable copies of the film for that reason, and DVD's will be distributed with a disclaimer.  Anyone who was not on this trip, that would like to see the DVD can contact me via my email address at JasonS@TranscendSolutions.com, and I will work out getting one to you.  For those of you who were involved, I need you to send me your mailing address so I can get them in the mail to you.

I am hoping that we can use this as a spring board for better and cooler DVD's in the future, because putting it together was a lot of fun, although it was a lot of hard work.  A special thanks goes out to all of you who helped put this event together, and those who helped me finished the DVD!

Yeahhhhh!

Jason
