Title: New FMIC... It's in! new pics added.
Post by: Chas on May 09, 2004, 09:37:33 PM
So I decided to get the new FMIC for my car. I now have to figure out how to mount it. Most of the hard stuff is already done with my first effort at a FMIC. The piping is already in place and ready to be fitted to the new unit. Getting it centered and mounted is the next issue.

But here's what I have to work with:

(http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0TADdAmEWREX*veMdy2fBS2WelU4swo8FQ4Z1CgnQ6RkwPfc2pr6VeUt7C6byomWLSPGNZxktgG4OhN2DO01JPse9Uvd4nenV3kzSwq7rqB0MeIsE5vNPxw/New%20FMIC%201.jpg?dc=4675471559501236231)

(http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0TADjAmIWgUX*veMdy2fBS2a9pnrMVbRh4GpuqIkFVkRsqc2lIQM8WohpLmClxdu4GtBRK94W0kB9o2F5NN6xNdNIEkmg5wC0gcfSvH6x6kdoNJamfsbJvQ/New%20FMIC%202.jpg?dc=4675471559505483476)

It's a brand new unit with core dementions of 17 x 9 x 2. The over all length of this unit is 27" long by slightly less than 10" tall. There are mounting bosses on the sides and bottom or top (however you mount the thing). But I already have a plan for it and some ideas for getting it on my car.
This is very compairable to Pat's Evo FMIC we are hoping to get installed sometime this coming week. we want to get his in before his trip to Sandia Motor Speedway in NM with Rusty!!!  8-)  8)  :)

So with any luck there will be two new FMIC'ed 1.8T cars in our local club!!!!

This was the smaller of the two units sold by these guys. The other one they had was HUGE! It had it's own gravitational pull!!!

This one will be perfect for the K03 or K04 turbo. There might be a slight bit more lag filling this bad boy up, but I am hoping to limit that by relocating my DV to the driver's side of the IC. Thus removing the need to refill the IC everytime I make a shift. I have the parts for that also on the way to me. If Pat wants, we can even try and figure out a way to make his DV be on the driver's side to limit the turbo lag as well. We'll see...  :-D  8)

OK, so FMIC, wheels, but what about the rear?  what you got planned?  Painted lowers all around? Deck lip? Big ricer wing?  hehehe

Well heat soak wasn't much of a problem before. I'm replacing one FMIC with a larger FMIC. And besides, this one is polished!!!  :)  8)

I think I'll go rip the front bumper cover off my car right now...  8-)  8-)   8)  8)

Now if only my DV relocation parts would get here.

Jon, Winston knows what it is. I've only had it for about 7 months now. The freaking thing has caused me some serious issues over that time.

Dub, I completely stripped in down to the plastic, again. I think I might have it figured out. But some help from you would be much appriciated. Is the "paint booth" still in business?

Jon, it's a Zendar rear spoiler that is half way painted. The two side pieces are done, but the middle has been giving shit!

OK! SO here are the latest pictures of my newest addition guys!!! I installed the beast on monday afternoon. It took me about 3 hours to do it. It wasn't too bad because I already had mosst of the pipe work done. I just had to "trim" them a bit to fit the larger IC.

Also, as it turns out, our friend Rusty bought the other FMIC this shop had. So he'll have the same unit in his car too! And as soon as Pat gets all the parts for his FMIC, we'll have 3 cars with simular aftermarket IC's!  :D

Not bad at all, a little smaller then I thought, but works for such a small turbo.

Congrats.

That's awesome Chas!

Looks great!  I was going to make a rain comment too.  It seems like it is always raining in your pictures.  Shows your wax off well though.

Steve, 17 x 9 x 2 isn't all that small. Any larger and the darn thing wouldn't fit behind the bumper bar. Yeah, it does work well for this size of turbo. Though the one that Evo sells is only 1" taller than this one at 17 x 10 x 2. Those are all core sizes. The over all length of this one is 27" by 10" tall. Only about 3 inches of it are behind the bumper bar. So a lot of it is out in the stream of air!  :)

Chas, I was able to locate a core, with end caps, AND polished caps for $199 from some ricer shop.  One bad thing is that the mounting points are on the bottom of the core, and the inlet/outlet pipes are 2.5".  Isnt the stock diameter 2.25"?  The core dimensions are 18x10x2, with an overall lenght of 26" iirc.  Im hoping it to still fit under the bumper support.  Whats your thoughts?

Steve

Steve, If you can work out the mounts, then that unit should fit behind the bumper bar. The mounts are kind of important though. And the stock In/Out pipes are actually 2", not 2.25".

Also, a little update, The IC and car has been running very well this summer. The outside air temps need to be in the mid 90's before the car starts to pull back timing and boost due to heat.

Add to that the 93.5 octane gas that JR turned me onto and the car is now a complete stormer!!!

I'm going to get the same core. I just can't right yet...my dog's CC bill is almost paid off. When I do though, Chas, maybe I can take it over to your place and do a test fit with it.

I don't know how long you plan on waiting Steve, but I could work with Chas hopefully in the next month or so and then we can send you what you need or at least have pics for you to follow...I dunno. Chas? Steve? Whadda think?

Well I just finished ordering my core tonight.  I plan on ordered the rest of the pipes and silicone hoses later this week.  I have to want for a credit to come back from Paypal and I should be set.

Im going to see what all I have available here because I really need to get this in ASAP.  The oil cooler I bought has been on hold until I find a fmic because the oil cooler will go where the side mounted one goes.  The stock oil cooler leaks coolant and I need to get that taken care of.

Here is the link where I ordered mine from.  They are based out of Canada but should still be a pretty good deal.  Shipped was $40, but still for $239, its a whole lot better then the Paragon core at $400.

Yeah, my wife is kinda like "eh" on the intercooler right now. So I'm probably gonna have to wait anyway. Get it in, take some pics and let me know where you get the piping...VWOTG is my deadline here only because it's the first main event of driving season.

I think my brakes are almost nothing now so I'll probably have to get those before the FMIC.  eh. cars.
